Remember the feeling you had when you lost sight of your mom in a sea of people in the grocery store? Imagine the feeling of being locked in a room alone for days or quite possibly years at a time with zero communication to the outside world. No access to family members or friends while life continues to move on. Thousands of United States citizens are currently experiencing this feeling of frightening isolation. These citizens are federal prisoners. At some pivotal point during a person’s life in prison, he or she involved their self in behavior that is not tolerated in prison consequently resulting in solitary confinement. Inmates often lose touch with reality after being completely isolated for several hours at a time for a year or longer. Prisoners experience sensory deprivation, which the Oxford dictionary defines as “a process by which someone is deprived of normal external stimuli such as sight and sound for an extended period of time”. Sensory deprivation is a form of human rights violation by which increases a prisoner’s chances of experiencing depression. President Obama addressed this issue of total isolation in a speech he gave this summer, “Social science shows that an environment like that is often more likely to make inmates more alienated, more hostile, and potentially more violent”. When the President of the United States commentates on an issue that he believes is detrimental to society, we as a country should pay close attention and subject ourselves to creating a solution. Further research can prove President Obama’s inferences. Solitary Watch, a website that provides numerous accounts of stories relating to solitary confinement shows that a majority of mentally ill inmates in solitary do become violent and eventually become victims of suicide. Not only are the mentally ill socially segregated but so are juveniles; reports of suicide being the highest among these two people
