Decent Essays

Nowadays, an average of 25,000 tonnes of solid waste were disposed of daily because of human activities of domestic households, commercial and manufacturing business and construction sites in the territory. This tells an imminent land pollution problem in Hong Kong. To deal with this problem, I discover three solutions. The three possible solutions will be increasing the number of recycling bins, landfill expansion and building more incinerators. The best remedy of the problem of land pollution will be building more incinerators.

The second solution might be for the Environmental Protection Department to increase the number of recycling bins. As the recycling method might help to decrease the number of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong, …show more content…

It is only a short term mean, even landfills are extended, they can only last for a short period of time. For instance, the Tseung Kwan O landfill could only use for six years even if it is expand. This mean can only provide an immediate force to deal with the waste, but would not help to deal with the problem of land pollution. As we could not expand the landfills immensely, landfill expansion would not be a method to deal with the land pollution problem at root.

The best solution would be for the government to build more incinerators because they would greatly decrease the original size of waste and generate electricity.

First, the size of original waste would greatly decrease. From the statistic from the Japan government, using incinerators will reduce the solid mass of rubbish by 80%-85% and also the volume of waste by 95%-96%. This shows that using incinerators would decrease a large number of solid waste. Second, the generated heat could be used to generate electricity. As the heat from the incineration could be used as a kind of energy. The power stations could burn less coal and petroleum in order to release less air pollutant. This would help to ease the situation of global warning.

Still, there might be some people believed that building more incinerators might release a large number of air pollutant and have serious safety problem.

Critics may argue that burning waste pollutes the air, because the incinerator in Lai Chi Kok was closed years ago
