Song Analysis: The Working Hour

As the time comes to induct new songs in the American Music Hall of Fame, I submit my three choices for admittance, and believe they reflect American culture and have artistic value.

The song I chose is a song sung by Martina McBride, a country singer, called Concrete Angel. The song was written by Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley, later released on November 18, 2002. The song is about a young girl, Angela Carter, who doesn’t have the most stable and safest home. At home she is domestically abused by her drugged mother, neglected and forced to take care of herself; she packs her own school lunch, walks to school by herself, and is wearing the same dress showing her mom does not care to give her new clothes. When watching the music video, in the beginning children are laughing at her, which shows she is bullied, another main theme tackled in the song. Blues is an African-American music that covers a wide range of emotions and musical styles. “Feeling blue” is expressed in songs whose verses lament injustice or express longing for a better life and lost loves, jobs, and money. But blues is also a raucous dance music that celebrates pleasure and success. Central to the idea of blues performance is the concept that, by performing or listening to the blues, one is able to overcome sadness and find hope.

While Augustus and Hazel were in Amsterdam, Gus tells Hazel about his PET scan. He says to her “I lit up like a Christmas tree, Hazel Grace. The lining of my chest, my left hip, my liver, everywhere.” (Green 214) This means that the PET scan showed he had tumors from cancer all over his body, Augustus was slowly dying from the newly arrived cancer.

My first work is "La Primavera" written by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi in 1723. “La Primavera” is one of four violin concertos, each capturing moods and illustrating stories related to a specific time of year. Each section within this movement illustrate the most beautiful scenes of the spring season, including birds, babbling brooks, and a thunderstorm. (Soomo). My second work is an oil on canvas painting, titled “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” by Thomas Moran. “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” was painted in 1872 and captures the unique geological formations and diverse and extravagant colors of the Midwestern United States landscape. The common theme shared by both of the chosen pieces of work is nature. Antonio Vivaldi embraces the spring season and captures the moods and illustrates stories specific to that time of year. Moran captured the true beauty of a Midwestern landscape of the United States. Although one work is musical piece and the other is a landscape painting, both capture the beauty of nature and the surrounding elements.

Whiskey Lullaby is a song sung by Brad Paisley (ft. Alison Krauss) which narrates the story of a soldier coming back from war to find his wife in bed with another man. After this, the man drinks away his life trying to escape the pain until he commits suicide. Then the song continues to talk about how the woman follows down the same path after hearing about his death. In the end of the song they both get buried next to each other which symbolizes how they are finally together. The audience for this country song is those who have served or who have had family members serve. The unexpectedness of how life will figure itself out when the soldiers return. We see how these concepts norms, values, structure and social facts, and agency give an understanding to lyrics in a song for society and how the concepts tell the story in the song “Wrong way” by Sublime. Many important factors came from these concepts we have to see the role society (her father, brothers, and narrative) played in Annie’s life and what influenced her choices in life. Symbolic interaction theory effectively explains the narrative in this song because of the different views Annie and him see with her life, that her reality of her life is a good life, and that he does not see it as a good way of life but as a bad road ahead.

One artwork that I have chosen to write about is Harriet Tubman by Aaron Douglas. I have selected this artwork because I am drawn to its color. In addition, I have a strong admiration for the subject matter. Looking at this artwork relaxed me and made me feel at peace as I was emotionally hypnotized by the color green. Even after looking at this artwork for a prolonged period of time, my admiration for it did not change. This artwork seems to represent freedom and being at peace.

Many songs that we listened to sounded like they came right out of Brave New World. The ones I liked most would have to be “Can't Feel My Face”, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “I Am Produced”.

One of my favorite songs is, “Love Yours” by J. Cole. He is one of my favorite artists and his words are very lyrical. In this song, he is speaking as a first-person narrator. Jermain Cole AKA J. Cole was born in Frankfurt, Germany but moved to North Carolina when he was an infant. He credits Tupac as one of his major influences on his music. Growing up he didn’t have much but on his birthday, he asked his mom for a beat machine. He started out in producing music, but then used his rap on his own beats throughout high school. When he was fourteen, he had two mentors that gave him his stage name “Therapist” for his soulful flow and rhymes. After graduating high school, he moved to the Big Apple to attend St. John University on scholarships.

I think the author of the poem, "leaving the Motel," would approve of the song, "Me and Mrs. Jones," to express his poem in song form. It defines a furtive affair between a man and his lover. In the poem, "Leaving the Motel," the author describes two people are having an affair. The private couple do not want to get caught and ruin their lives outside of the relationship. The author writes, "Too. Keep things straight: don't take --The matches, the wrong keyrings--We've nowhere we could keep a keepsake" This line means the couple is double-check to make sure they have nothing of each others. In my viewpoint, everyone was preparing for the day in which they should give the answers. every group should have one response form the clues that they have. Each pair had different answers, which were wrong except judge Ford and Sandy. however, they decided to give no answer to protect Westing's ex-wife in page (138). The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich.
