Based on the title, “Song of the Towers”, my interpretation of this oil painting is that Jazz music and technology was on the rise. There looks to be smoke stacks on the right and left side of the painting showing a type of industry. The subject matter appears with big emphasis in the middle of the painting. It’s a man figure with a saxophone in his hand with his arms held high as if he’s reaching for the sky. Its style seems to be realistic to me. We have a man on top of a cog which to states the new technology era. The background appears to look like skyscrapers in the big apple (New York). I can verify the city because I can see the shape of the statue of liberty in the background with a yellow hue. There was a use of gestural lines to create
“Manhattan” by George Grosz was made in 1946 and is made of oil on board. The painting is a city scene of Manhattan during Grosz’s time. The composition seems to be at a view at roughly fifty stories high in a skyscraper or apartment complex in New York City. The piece is very linear. By that, I mean it is mostly consisting of various types of lines such as thick and thin, horizontal and vertical, diagonal, and cross-hatching. Using these diverse techniques for line quality, perspective and space is created. The line quality gives the painting some type of kinetic energy vibe that makes the painting unique. The lighting that was chosen creates this feeling of getting ready to leave work or the day is ending because the light source of the
The contour lines of the painting are drawn strong and hard, isolating each figure. The lines in the painting are mainly vertical. The majority of the people are all standing up, the soldiers weapons are pointed upward, and the pillars are painted tall. The vertical lines communicates a sense of heighten spirituality. Also, if you look closely behind John Brown, the artist manipulates the lines of the building to put a cross-shaped figure right above his head. The combination of these two factors gives us the feeling that Thomas Hovenden was trying to portray John Brown as a Christ-like Martyr heading to his crucifixion.
Aaron Douglas’s piece titled Aspiration is oil painted on canvas by Aaron Douglas. All the flash lights in the dark night are what caught my eye first. When I divide the order of paintings into upper, middle, and lower, I feel that there is a higher ruling class living there. Two men in the middle and one woman each of three figures is holding an object in their hands that might symbolize different subjects of something and dreams of the life of the ruling class through the object. Three people in the middle are looking at the lights or building ahead. It looks like they are trying to reach the city on the hill and dream for the future ahead of them. And those three figures depicted had been escaped from the chains that hold the people under the three figures. And those people down there are also try to escape from there to find freedom. And also shows as what most of them dreamed of being.
The front of the painting shows three African American men in the time of the Harlem Renaissance. Each of the men are doing something different. Near the three men, are factories blowing out smoke. In the lower right hand corner, a man is being held back and dragged down by what seems to be a hand made from the smoke, showing that he is still doing work that he does not want to do. Below him are cotton fields, where slaves used to have to work and do hard labor with little to no pay. The man on the bottom left side is shown to also have the hand by him, watching his moves. He is in a pose where he is frustrated and seems to have given up on his dreams. Closer to the center, higher up, stands a third man, playing a saxophone. Music can symbolize freedom and awakening. Along the outer edges of the painting, the colors are dark browns, reds, and oranges. As the focus is drawn closer to the center, lighter colors such as yellow. Darkness, as an archetype, represents despair and the unknown while lightness shows hope, renewal and intelligence. The goals of success, exuberancy, and harmony showed hope and renewal in change in
The looming tower by Lawrence wright is a nonfiction book that covers the decades that lead to the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East, and around the world. This book described the how the lives of men from different backgrounds and countries came together and organized the most fear terrorist organization in the modern history. This book goes on to show the lack of understanding that the United States intelligence community had when dealing with the Islamic community, and how all of this culminated into what most remember as 9/11.
Theme Correlation A theme of a literary work is a main idea or a form of an underlying meaning. In the novels The Glass Castle, Flight, and The Joy Luck Club contain multiple themes. Although, all three books shared two common themes such as, family and betrayal. The Glass Castle is an enticing memoir written by Janette Walls, in this she writes about her poverty-stricken life.
- P: In the painting there are four clocks, a dead tree, a body of water in the distance, sand, mountains, a white blanket, ants, and a snake. It is definitely day time and parts of the desert are cut. One clock is melted over a dead tree's branch. Another one is melted along the split of the land. Another one is rusted and has a ton of black ants scattering on top of it. Finally,
The oil painting is an attempt to map the motion and energy of the body. It is a sequential depiction of movement split into a series of about twenty different static positions that show a nude figure descending a flight of stairs. The nude, like the notion of the painting, is abstract, composed of conical and cylindrical shapes and elements, assembled in a way that suggests the rhythm of the body when going downstairs. The colours used are those typical of Cubist paintings - ochres and browns. This is because Cubists felt that using a
"Hassan!” I called. “Come back with it!” He was already turning the street corner, his rubber boots kicking up snow. He stopped, turned. He cupped his hands around his mouth. “For you, a thousand times over!” he said.
The painting that I chose to write my formal analysis on is called “The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, At Night”. This piece was created by Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, France and was completed sometime in September of 1888. This painting is oil on canvas, and it is currently housed in the Kroller-Muller Museum located in Otterlo, The Netherlands in Europe.
The main setting of the Westing game is Sunset Towers.“Sunset towers faced east and had no towers” I interpreted this meaning it was short and big. It only has 5 stories so it is not very tall. “It is located at the edge of town”This is my interpretation of what sunset towers looked like. I included lake Michigan and the wire fence. Sunset towers are a big and shining apartment building. This is what I think it looked
I feel happy when I look at this painting because you see people laughing, eating, chatting, and smiling while having a good time outdoors in nice weather. When I divided the painting into four sections I seen in the top left boats sailing in the water with a bridge in the distance that I had not noticed that makes the art work look peaceful because of the colors used in the distance with the water. Another piece I had not noticed was in the top right piece of the work was a women holding her hands to her ears which may indicate that it is loud because of everyone socializing. In the bottom left corner you see a women talking to a dog that is sitting on the table which shows a sense of love. Also in the bottom right-hand side you see a women and two other men look like they are having a conversation. By these images it is clear to see some symbolism such as the dog on the table, these people are more than likely not very proper if they have a dog on the same table they just ate off of. Also the women holding her ears is symbolic and shows the viewer with all the people talking it is noisy. Another image that is symbolic is how the men are wearing revealing shirts while the
You chose two wonderful paintings to evaluate, I had never seen them before until you did your research on them. It's also nice to have two paintings that depict the same theme, yes both have different circumstances, but the parliament buildings as the overall theme is a nice comparison. In one you have the parliament building on fire in the other you have the sun lighting up the parliament. It's kinda of funny that at quick glance the Monet painting almost looks like the building is on fire as well. One painting is action intense and very heavy on excitement, while the other is a serene setting and very calm.
Ballad of Birmingham written by Dudley Randall, wants to show the sadness and what it was like the day the mother found out her daughter had left the world. He wrote this sad poem to show what it might have been like to be in the mother’s shoes, to show readers what a horrific event happened that not a lot of people have never heard about before. Through the use of irony Randall shows that even sad events can have some irony in any situation.
Prior to a reading The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini, I watched the movie in fourth grade. The movie provided very vivid graphics especially of the rape scene which still does freak me out. This book has recalled this horrid memory and weakened my liken to the book. The book seemed to be a build up of pain which was only partly relieved at the end. Personally I would have enjoyed a happier ending to the book because I felt like Amir, Baba, and everyone else need to end on a good note. However, there is no such thing as happy endings, it simply depends on where you stop the story. Also the author had no choice in the story plot because it was biography. Although this ending wasn’t perfect, I liked the fact that it allowed the reader to imagine where and how Amir and Sohrab were. This book was by no means perfect but it allowed the reader to see a different point of view.
