Amazing authors can induce thoughts by a single word. The ideas that can form in our heads by a small phrase are powerful. Only the most talented and capable authors can provoke such feelings within us. Who is more than able to stir these feelings in a reader but William Shakespeare? His various plays keep us entranced and curious but it is his poetry that strikes a chord deep within us. Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare is particularly powerful. He writes about a love that cannot be compared to anything in the world because of his deep infatuation.

He then proceeds to bombard us with images of natural nuisances such as windy days that "…shake the darling buds of May," hot weather magnified because it is coming from heaven, and changing seasons. Shakespeare has taken the idea of a warm breezy summer day and twisted it into a sweltering day with the sun beating down on us.
However, in the lines after the destruction of a nice day, he makes us smile by the comments he showers on his love. He tells us that his love’s beauty shall remain the same at all times. "…thy…shall not fade." He places an exclamation on that line by using the word eternal. It gives us the feeling that her beauty is one that will last until the end of the earth. Shakespeare then goes on to speak about how exquisite she is. She is different from everyone because she will always have what she has now unlike others that will lose it. Even if death looms before her he has to right or reason to "brag." She will not pale in his shadow. Shakespeare capitalizes Death and personifies him and gives us an image of a grim reaper type character.

This poem is not simply a procession of interchangeable metaphors; it is the story of the speaker slowly coming to grips with the finality of his age and his impermanence in time.
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” (“Sonnet 18”) is one of Shakespeare’s most famous poems. It is the model English, or Shakespearean sonnet: it contains three quatrains and a finishing couplet.. The poem follows the traditional English sonnet form by having the octet introduce an idea or set up the poem, and the sestet beginning with a volta, or turn in perspective. In the octet of Sonnet 18, Shakespeare poses the question “Shall I compare the to a summer’s day” and basically begins to describe all the bad qualities of summer. He says it’s too windy, too short, too hot, and too cloudy. Eventually fall is going to come and take away all the beauty because of the changes nature brings. In the sestet, however, his tone changes as he begins to talk about his beloved’s “eternal summer” (Shakespeare line 9). This is where the turn takes place in the poem. Unlike the summer, their beauty will never fade. Not even death can stop their beauty for, according to Shakespeare, as long as people can read this poem, his lover’s beauty will continue to live. Shakespeare believes that his art is more powerful than any season and that in it beauty can be permanent.
Through isolating that line, it not only emphasises its importance as a statement, with ‘summer’ being a metaphor for his son, and thus showing pure paternal love; but also the importance of the new tone, pride. The word ‘But’, although with negative connotations, is used to positively emphasise the importance of the new phase of acceptance of his son’s death, and the continuation of his paternal love. It is through this line that Shakespeare goes on to explain how his love for his son will never diminish, as it is immortalised, along with his son, in the poem. This is the act of creating an autotelic memorial in that the poem will never fade away, ever when the writer dies. Due to this, Shakespeare is able to show that his concept of love, no matter what form it is in, is so strong and true that it is infinite and can overcome all obstacles, even death itself. To a 16th century reader, the concept of love taking many forms and overcoming even death was unconventional, as it contrasted greatly to the accepted ideal of courtly love, which was limited and weak. A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines that rhyme in a particular pattern. William Shakespeare’s sonnets were the only non-dramatic poetry that he wrote. Shakespeare used sonnets within some of his plays, but his sonnets are best known as a series of one hundred and fifty-four poems. The series of one hundred and fifty-four poems tell a story about a young aristocrat and a mysterious mistress. Many people have analyzed and contemplated about the significance of these “lovers”. After analysis of the content of both the “young man” sonnets and the “dark lady sonnets”, it is clear that the poet, Shakespeare, has a great love for the young man and only lusts after his mistress.
Shakespeare uses the metaphor of a beautiful blooming flower to represent Wolsey’s hope and expectation stating, “ tender leaves of hope” but then shoots down the hope he feels with the phrase “killing frost”. The description of the flower shows Wolsey’s delicate nature and vulnerability. The “killing frost” emphasizes the harsh loss Wolsey faces when losing his job. It is also symbolic of how abrupt and cruel Wolsey’s firing was because it also references the time frame of the “third day”. By doing this Shakespeare emulates Wolsey's anger towards his quick firing and fall from the king’s good graces. Shakespeare also uses a simile comparing Wolsey’s fall to Lucifers. It emphasizes the relationship Wolsey has to the king placing him in a God like state and then Wolsey being banished from the kings grace. Naturally, Shakespeare’s very first Sonnet deals with themes of procreation and immortality, literally and figuratively birthing his series of Sonnets. Ideas of Genesis, or the creation of the world, show strong traces throughout the poem and serve as the piece’s main focus according to literary critic Helen Vendler. The sonnet also deals with the logistics of beauty; we want the most beautiful people to have children, so their beauty will be preserved forever—when the parent dies, the child they leave behind will remind us of their own beauty. Shakespeare utilizes metaphors in his language to help promote this idea, for example the image of a bud, growing until it inevitably dies and diminishes. Unlike flowers, Shakespeare tells us here that we humans have the opportunity to keep this beauty everlasting. The very beginning of Shakespeare’s infamous series of sonnets, Sonnet 1 celebrates the beauty of procreation and offers a plea for humanity centered around our duty as humans to procreate and let our legacies live on, so our spirits can live vicariously through generations of our children.

This being so a lot of scholars focus on his style and way of saying things to try and get a better understanding of Shakespeare the person. Many scholars have tried to get an insight into shakespeare by analyzing how and what he wrote. Many poets use poetry as a way to express their feelings and emotions, so readers of Shakespeare should be able to start to grasp a picture of who he was by reading his poetry and paying attention to the similarities and unique differences of his work to the norm of the day.

Shakespeare’s sonnet 60 expresses the inevitable end that comes with time and uses this dark truth to express his hopefulness that his poetry will carry his beloved’s beauty and worth into the future in some way so that it may never die. This love poem is, as all sonnets are, fourteen lines. Three quatrains form these fourteen lines, and each quatrain consists of two lines. Furthermore, the last two lines that follow these quatrains are known as the couplet. This sonnet has the rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG, as most Shakespearean sonnets follow. In each of the three quatrains, Shakespeare discusses a different idea. In this particular sonnet, the idea is how time continues to pass on, causing everything to die. The couplet connects these ideas to one central theme, this theme being Shakespeare’s hope for the beauty of his beloved’s immortality through his poetry’s continuation into future times.
The imagery is powerful. Summer is personified as battling against time. In Sonnet 7 (“Lo, in the orient, when the gracious light..”), one out of the 154 sonnets written by the English playwright and poet, William Shakespeare, focuses on the burden of beauty and how human life can be compared to the passage of the sun rising and setting. Throughout the whole poem, the advice is given to the young man, to follow the sun and its direction.
