Sonya Fitzpatrick was serious about her writing “The Turtle Jean Lafitte: Adventures of a Pet Psychic”, she published a book called “The Pet Psychic: What the Animals Tell Me”. Some people might say that she is a serious psychic with abilities, and other people might say that she is just an entertainer with light-hearted stories to tell. Fitzpatrick firmly believes she is a pet psychic who can communicate with animals. However, I believe the intent behind this excerpt is to tell a humorous story about an unhappy turtle who spoke to her and tricked her into getting him a fish so he could eat it, not to show scientific data to back up her claims. Towards the end of the story, she shares how she can't believe the turtle tricked her into getting him a fish, she …show more content…
The intent behind this story was to put a light-hearted twist on the narrative. By sharing how she was communicating with a turtle who didn’t like where his aquarium was placed, Fitzpatrick highlights her seriousness in her belief in her abilities. Additionally, she includes steps following her story on communicating with pets at home, “SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PET” (Fitzpatrick 175). Fitzpatrick outright starts by saying that the turtle spoke to her in a tiny voice, explaining, “he told me he had outgrown his aquarium tank, and that it didn’t have any stone on the bottom where he could get proper traction to walk and dive” (Fitzpatrick 174). Lastly, she wrote about her friend being skeptical of her abilities, stating, “I offered to speak to the turtle and find out what was wrong, an offer which astounded her” (Fitzpatrick 173). Fitzpatrick described her ability to her friend, and she was so desperate to get help for the turtle that she accepted. Her friend believed her after she knew that the tank had been moved and went to the pet store to buy what turtle, Jean Lafitte, had supposedly told Fitzpatrick he
The passage i will be analyzing is on pages 243 to page 244.The author's purpose for writing the passage “ The Turtle said ‘ I have eaten your tears, and this is why I know your misery. But I must warn you. If you cry, your life will always be sad.’” (243), is to convey the message that you shouldn't cry when something bad happens and if you do then you will not be able to live a happy life.
In "Do Animals Lie?" by Mary Batten the central idea is that all animals lie and trick each other to get things they need for them to be able to survive. Some fish have something on them that helps them survive in the ocean. For example, the anglerfish has something similar to a fishing rod on it that helps it catch food for it to eat. Also, the comet fish can make itself look like an eel so other fish won’t try to eat it.
