Source Evaluation Essay: Is Pluto No Longer A Planet

Many issues have arisen from the debate whether or not Pluto is a planet. Some astronomers say that Pluto should be classified as a “minor planet” due to its size, physical characteristics, and other factors. On the other hand, some astronomers defend Pluto’s planet status, citing several key features.

Going back to the criteria the three pieces of criteria it needs to meet are, the object must orbit the sun, the object must be a sphere and it must be created and maintained by its own gravitational force, and the object must have a clear path around its orbit of other objects. Pluto does orbit the sun. It does have a spherical shape, but Pluto’s path is not clear, it is crowded with lots of other objects. That proves that Pluto is not a planet because, it only meets two of the three criteria pieces.There are rocks in outer space that are the same size as Pluto! That’s pretty small to be considered a planet. If you look at a comparison of the other planets and Pluto you will see the drastic difference. Pluto is just simply too puny to be a planet. Many people say that it should be continued to be thought of as a planet because it has been that way for a long time and that's how most people know Pluto as, a planet. That doesn’t matter though, just because people are used to it being known as a planet doesn’t mean Pluto should still be considered a planet. Facts clearly show that Pluto is a dwarf planet. There are rocks in outer space that are the same size as Pluto! That’s pretty small to be considered a planet. Astronomers now label Pluto as a “dwarf planet” because it does not meet all of the criteria to be a planet. It is also not alone in its orbit; it is part of a wide group of small-scale objects that have been detected revolving around the Sun beyond Neptune.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s dwarf book is much like Pluto: It’s got plenty of interesting facts however it is mostly appreciated for the illustrations. Dr. Tyson’s new book, the publication is a space nonfiction of Pluto’s fall from planethood. Dr. Tyson wrote this book to explore the reasons why Pluto was demoted from the status of being a planet and all of the history behind the discovery. Also, due to his vast interest in Astronomy, Dr.Tyson was influenced to write The Pluto Files.

Pluto was found by a scientist in 1930. Through that time there was debates over whether this little ball of ice should be not considered a planet. The Earth, in comparison, has 1.7 million times the mass of the other objects in its orbit.” This is saying its too small to be a planet. Also on Starchild, it says “Pluto is usually farthest from the Sun. However, its orbit "crosses" inside of Neptune's orbit for 20 years out of every 248 years. Pluto last crossed inside Neptune's orbit on February 7, 1979, and temporarily became the 8th planet from the Sun.

Secondly,what is pluto,a planet,a planet oid or a comet? The outward-bound voyager one and two spacecraft were both launched in 1977,which started the drama about Pluto. Pluto is twice the size of Ceres and the largest known asteroid.

Pluto should not be considered a planet because it did not meet requirements. There are many requirements that bodies have to meet to be considered a planet. First of all, you probably know Pluto fits all but one of the IAU’s, International planet requirements. The original definition of planet was a wanderer, created by the Greeks that watched these planets move for thousands of years (Scientific American). If the world had left that definition, then we would have hundreds of planets in our solar system including Pluto. As i was growing up all my science teachers will always say that there was 9 planets in our solar system. But as time went by, little by little the 9 planets started fading, now in days there still debating whether considering Pluto a planet or not. According to scientists, pluto does not meet the standards that fall under the category to be a “planet”. Pluto has many features that they considered to be a dwarf planet like: its large distance from the sun, that it doesn't have its own orbit, its temperature is extremely cold, all these facts are the reason why many people are still debating pluto's status. Pluto was found by Clyde Tombaugh, an astronomer from the United States in 1930.

What if something one believed in for a lifetime turned out to be wrong? Among astronomers and astrogeologists one of the most asked questions within the field would be, “Is Pluto a planet?” As of August 24, 2006, Pluto was demoted as a planet by the International Astronomical Union to a dwarf planet and since then this has been a hot debate topic. Based off of the unfair voting that took place to demote Pluto and the ambiguous definition of a planet by the International Astronomical Union, Pluto should be considered a planet. For starters, one of the reasons Pluto should be considered a planet is the “unfair” vote that took place deciding whether Pluto should should demoted.

In 1929 Tombaugh used the calculations of Powell and W.H. Pickering as a guide to search for the planet Pluto. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered the tiny, distant planet which we call Pluto by using a new astronomic technique of photographic plates combined with a blink microscope. With the help of other astronomers he was able to confirm that he had discovered the planet and later went on to publicly announce that he had made the discovery of Pluto on March 13, 1930.

The discussion was more of a debate since some students agreed on Pluto being a planet while others did not. It seems that humans can’t agree on things unless we have more evidence, then we will know how Pluto might be classified. Or perhaps the question of Pluto’s planet hood will be answered if given a new point of view. For instance, someone suggested that there could be different species of planets, like there are different species of plants and animals. 2)

According to Discovery education that in order to be a planet it has to orbit the sun,be round and be maintained by it’s own gravitational force, and that it must have cleared the neighborhood around it’s orbit of other objects and pluto follows ⅔ which should be considered a planet.That means that pluto is a planet if it can meet the expectations.It orbits the sun like other planets do which still means it should still be a planet.It doesn’t meet the expectation of clearing the neighboring path.It hit ⅔ which is better than 0/3which is better than any piece of rock or actual other dwarf planet could do.Anyways how is a planet supposed to move and clear something.Is it alive
