Group 5A South Boys Region Quarterfinals
Group 5A is stacked with some of the most talented players in the area, and on Monday night at Norview High School they will all be under one roof.
First matchup of the night will tip-off at 6pm. Maury Commodores will take on the Hampton Crabbers.
Crabbers will be riding the momentum of winning the Pen South Conference Championship against their cross-town rivals Bethel just a few days earlier. Crabbers will rely on their backcourt of Jalen Ray and Marquis Godwin to create confusion for the Maury defense. Many consider Ray as one of the most talented in the area, while his counterpart Godwin is talked about as one of the best shooters in the area. Crabbers will have to put together a strong game together defensively as they are going up against a team that likes to move the ball to find open spots on the court to get good looks for easy shots.

Maury will look to Chase Coleman to be the elite floor general that he usually is and make smart decisions with the ball. Bryan Phillips will need to have a big game both offensively and defensively. Phillips is capable of creating his own shot, which will play a big roll down the stretch of this game. Many forget about Matthew Mensia who continues to have breakout games. He will be the dark horse that can swing this game in Maury’s favor. On the defensive side, they have to figure out a way to slow down Jalen Ray. If they just let him drive into the paint as he pleases then it will be a long night for the Commodores. Maury cannot leave Godwin open he will make more shots than he misses when he has a good look at the
Crabbers came out hot! Jalen Ray put his athleticism on display, while Marquis Godwin hit a clean step back jumper. Hampton went on a quick 6-0 run. Commodores were staying aggressive riding behind their stars Chase Coleman and Bryan Phillips. Crabbers took a 19-9 lead to end the first quarter. This game was shaping out to be a big one for Godwin as it did not see if he had plans on missing any shots.
