I am interested in working as a second grade teacher at South Row Elementary School for many reasons. After reading the mission statement I strongly believe that my educational philosophy matches the districts vision for their students. The small student population, as well as, the different sections of faculty allows for strong teacher to student relationships and opportunities for collaboration amongst faculty members. Chelmsford Public Schools mission is to, “cultivate inspired, creative, and well-rounded lifelong learners who process the integrity and self-direction necessary to be contributing community members.” I believe that as a teacher, it is my job to provide opportunities for students to become inspired, by not only themselves but others in order to reach their goals both academically and socially. I am currently teaching in a K-8 school with over one thousand students and feel as though a smaller setting would have many benefits. One of the first benefits would be having more of an opportunity to form relationships with both the students and faculty. As a teacher, it is extremely important to form strong, positive relationships with our students from the very beginning of the school year. This can be done through interest surveys and ice-breaker activities that encourage the students to get to know each other while providing the teacher with useful information. This information can then be used to engage students in conversations about interests and hobbies, as well as, to create relevant and meaningful lessons that will engage students. Mission Statements is a foundation of how you want your business to be successful. You have to find the right words, expressions and drive to for your mission statement to be addressed and meaningful. There are certain characteristics of a mission statement it’s a declaration of attitude and outlook. A good mission statement allows for alternative objectives. It also has to have organization’s diverse stakeholders. Stakeholders include employees and managers, board of directors, customers and suppliers. Most businesses mission statements provide motivation and general direction. It needs to be inspiring and identify the firm’s products and that it’s environmentally responsible.
As a parent, one would want the best available education for their child or children. This care is provided more by small or local schools rather than large schools. One reason small schools are more effective than large schools is the more readily available assistance. With a smaller student body, teachers and staff have more opportunities and time to work directly with individuals or groups. The increased opportunities to work individually with a staff member also proves that there can be deeper connections between staff and students, as well as in between the student body and between staff members. The more students in a class, the less productive the time is in my opinion. If a class is consumed of more than the average class, the teacher will be less likely to know everyone by their name and even more important by their character. I feel a personal relationship between the teacher and each student is vital. It’s easier on both parts. Throughout the many years I attended school, I feel that I have always tried to become close with my teachers. I think it benefited me greatly in instances where I was not doing so well or not understanding a topic, I was more at ease going to the teacher and asking for help. Since I was a young child, I have always found science interesting. I studied pointless information about space rigorously, and still have most of the old science books from that time. Although I no longer am as passionate as I once was, Cosby High School piqued my interest by showing a way to apply my current favorite science in a complex yet productive fashion: the medical field.

Early– early means before time. Why does it have to be early? To some students, it is not early; the requirements are the same for everyone. Some, like myself, just finish those requirements faster than others. I would like to apply to graduate South Warren High School in December because I have completed the requirements set for everyone at a faster pace than those around me. Graduating in December is something that is a high honor. I have set my life to achieve those high honors, even those that people thought I could not achieve. Throughout high school I have learned to work hard, work smart, and be studious. I have developed these attributes from my college preparatory school Trinity Prep. Smaller classrooms and reduced teacher-student ratios have definite benefits, these two circumstances are perfect examples of how an intimate community-like setting can be naturally created simply by mere physical changes. Separating boys and girls also does this in its own way. Myself, having been lucky enough to experience both conditions have been met with only truly positive results. I have been a member of a little community such as this and I felt, and continue to feel, special because of it. This connection is much like a healthy relationship with a family member that has immense effects on a person's well-being. Students are assimilated in a way, very much different than if they were part of a co-ed gender classroom. For this reason students are associating with one another in especially exclusive ways; each pupil has their own breakthroughs in morale. Trust, fairness, understanding, respect, less judging and more compassion for student's peers are consequences of this intimacy.
One reason why elementary schools should have smaller class sizes is because students are able to receive more one on one time with their teacher. Students are allowed to enhance their learning by being able to concentrate fully and receive the proper engagement with their teacher. According to Garrett Delavan, 12 students per class is more beneficial. He proclaims that, “Common sense and research suggest that there is an optimal grouping size range where peer and adult interaction mutually benefit one another” (94). While agreeing with Delavan, students should be given the chance to be more familiar with their peers and teacher. Allowing 12 students per class, provides students the chance to interact with each other regularly. This is beneficial to both the student and the teacher’s by allowing them to build a stronger relationship. This passage from the book exemplifies the importance of a role that a teacher plays in a child's life. Teachers have the ability to improve a child's life without even realizing it - a refreshing revelation for both new and old teachers who may often wonder if they have ever made a difference. In most classrooms there will be students who will say they do not wish to be there and do not want to learn. And while the student’s unwillingness to learn is frustrating for teachers at times, the teacher creates the learning environment and can do much to motivate her students to succeed. By implementing effective teaching strategies, teachers can influence and motivate their students.
Smaller class sizes should be implemented throughout the United States to help our children better learn. Research has shown that smaller class sizes have a positive effect in the learning environment by encouraging students to participation more. According to Blatchford’s observations, he came to the conclusion that students in classes of 19 and less had more students start interactions with the teacher, in comparison to students in classes of 33 and more who instead had teachers starting more interactions (Folmer-Annevelink 31). With more teacher to student interaction, the individual needs of each student can be better met. My desire to become a teacher goes beyond a professional aspiration; it is also a personal commitment to self-growth and societal advancement. Since the time I was in school I have had the opportunity and pleasure to work with young people and listen to their problems in school and in their lives on a level where I’m neither a peer nor an authority figure. During this time I have decided to devote myself to these young people; I want to know that I can make a difference in their lives.
