The Southern Gothic qualities of violence, outsider and good vs. evil are evident in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Shirley Jackson’s “The Possibility of Evil”, and William Faulkner’s “A Rose For Emily”. These stories fits the traits of the Southern Gothic Genre. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor is one of the Southern Gothic Genre we have read in class. This is a story based on an family taking a family vacation to Florida. They decided to take a look at the house their grandmother grew up in and they ended up running into the Misfit, which kills their entire family. A trait identified in the story was an “outsider”. The outsider was the grandmother. No one really listened to her neither did they care …show more content…
“Good vs. Evil” was one of the traits that was discovered while reading the story. Miss Strangeworth fits this trait very well because she was evil to Helen by talking about her baby. Helen was nice enough to ignore Miss strangeworth’s nasty remarks. Specific trait that was also acknowledged in the story was “violence.” Violence was shown by the people in the town. They ruined all of Miss Strangeworth’s roses for all of the evil letters she sent them. The most certain trait was “good vs. evil.” Good vs. Evil is used because Miss Strangeworth is very self centered. She thinks she owns everybody on her street. “There wouldn’t be a town here at all if it hadn't been for my grandfather and the lumber …show more content…
This story was based on a old lady who falls in love with a man named Homer Barron. In the “Rose For Emily” the author uses “violence”. Emily had bought some arsenic form druggist to poison her husband because she didn't want him to leave her. Emily has killed Homer because she can’t live without him, but he won’t stay voluntarily, so she kept him in her home and was sleeping next to him. “One of us lifted something from it and leaning forward, that finn and invisible dust dry an acid in the nostrils, we saw a long stand of iron-gray hair.” Miss Emily was lying next to his body when she killed him, and she didn't really want anyone leave her side when her dad’s died because she kept her dad in her house for a long time. “The day after her dad death all the ladies had came to meet Miss Emily she had met them at the door, she told them her father wasn't dead.” She was isolated by her father and the people in town. They talked about her. She wouldn't let them go because she didn't want anyone to leave her. Another trait was “Good vs. Evil.” Homer Barron the man who loved Emily did a good thing just by showing her love and affection and in return she killed
In Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Possibility of Evil” the literary movement, Southern Gothicism, is expressed through certain attributes that allow an easier way to further understand the story. Southern Gothicism became popular in American literature during the slave era to show the “evil” of the south that not all people could visibly see. Jackson selects characteristics for Adela to figuratively express specific elements that are directly linked to the Southern Gothicism movement.
“John B McLemore lives in Shittown, Alabama,” Brian Reed quoted. Many people today can relate to some of the problems John faces in S-Town. Most of these problems are derived from southern gothic characteristics within the podcast. The podcast uses many different southern gothic characteristics in order to make it more interesting. Many of the examples of these characteristics are more modern so that they relate to our current society. S-Town is a piece of contemporary Southern Gothic Literature because of its use of social issues, irony, and outsiders.
Killings and A Rose for Emily were both stories that used love as an excuse for violence. In A Rose for Emily, she killed a man because she loved him and didn’t want to lose him. Matt, in Killings, killed his son’s murder; Matt’s wife had to face her son’s murder daily. Matt decided he loved his wife enough to kill that man.
In the 19th century, the Southern Gothic genre quickly became popular after Edgar Allen Poe poems in the 18th century. Most writings were formed around the Civil War era, which plays an enormous part in the tone and setting in Southern Gothic writing styles. (O’Connell 63) Southern Gothic writing elements consist of “horror, romance and psychological and domestic dramas” (63). The setting of Southern Gothic was always dingy and dark which explains the tone of most southern states at this time. Southern Gothic writing styles were known to be grotesque, violent and gloomy with dark psychological twists that were to be carried on into the 20th century. There can also be other ways to exercise Southern Gothic styles like including strange events, paranormal elements and representing history in an almost comical approach. (63) There are some authors who have written very influential Southern Gothic style literature, such as A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People by Flannery O’Conner.
Southern gothic is a type of literature that focuses on the harsh conflicts of violence and racism, which is observed in the perspective of black and white individuals. Some of the most familiar southern authors are William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and Cormac McCarthy. One author in particular, Flannery O’Connor, is a remarkable author, who directly reflects upon southern grotesque within her two short stories, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Revelation.” These two short stories are very similar to each other, which is why I believe that O’Connor often writes with violent characters to expose real violence in the world while tying them in with a particular spiritual insight.
Though the short stories “A Rose for Emily” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” differ in plot, theme, voice, and many other aspects, both contain similar characters and settings. The authors of these highly acclaimed Southern Gothic works, have skillfully and eloquently created intricate characters and imagery that portray many elements of Southern life. Flannery O’Connor’s, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” tells of the tragic events that take place during a family’s road trip to Tennessee, which ultimately ends in their unsightly demise at the hands of a notorious
William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” and Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” are two famous short stories written in the early 1900’s. These stories are commonly studied together because of how much they embody southern gothic writing and other striking similarities. “Barn Burning” and “A Good Man is Hard to find” are largely similar in their themes about morals, their southern gothic aesthetics, and their widespread violence with only minor differences.
Southern Gothic literature is a sub-genre of the Gothic writing style. It is unique to Southern America. Southern gothic style is a style of writing that engages very ugly and ironic events to study the value of the American south and its people. In this essay, I’m going to go over each story and give some details about the authors and their backgrounds. On one page, I will be comparing and contrasting all three stories. I will show how they’re similar through tone, plot, and scene in the story. And at the end, I am going to describe the three stories; “A Rose for Emilycomma inside quotes”, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “Sanctuary”. Period inside quotes All of these short stories are good examples of southern gothic writing, because
William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” starts out at Emily’s funeral and then goes onto a story about taxes, which Miss Emily is exempt from paying for life by Colonel Sartoris. During her life, Miss Emily’s father kept her isolated and ran off any potential suitors with a horsewhip. When her father died, Miss Emily refused to acknowledge the fact for three days. Soon after, Miss Emily met and started dating Homer Barron, “a northerner and a day laborer.” The town goes from being happy about the relationship to thinking of it as indecent. Homer seemingly deserted Miss Emily shortly after she bought poison. All is quiet for the next 40 years until Miss Emily’s death when Homer’s corpse is found sealed in an upstairs room (Faulkner 323-327). This paints a picture of a lonely, desperate woman. Miss Emily was isolated with just a butler for company. That does not make her a murder. Emily Grierson is innocent of murder because any evidence is circumstantial or illegally obtained, Tobe cared for Miss Emily enough to kill for her, and Miss Emily is legally insane.
Evil is judged on action and it is judged differently by other people. Society is the worst of all, everyone has their own opinions and everyone thinks that their opinion is the best but really the one of the worst types of evil is judgement, as the old saying goes don't judge a book by it's cover. This really works for the book the possibility of evil because at first Ms. Strangeworth seems like a nice little old lady with her rose garden and since she has been living in this town for so long that her evil was not thought of. What this story is trying to tell us is that evil is based off of situations and
William Faulkner was said to be one of the best Southern Gothic writers and the Southern Gothicism was brought about by Edgar Allen Poe in 1839. His novels and short stories such as Absalom! Absalom! (1936), The Sound and the Fury (1929), and “A Rose for Emily” (1930) were of the Southern Gothic genre. This paper will discuss what Southern Gothic is and its characteristics, along with William Faulkner and how Faulkner’s work conforms to the Southern Gothic genre.
The Story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor takes place in the south; in Georgia to be exact. It falls into the Southern Gothic genre. It begins with a family that is attempting to make their journey down to Florida for vacation. Throughout the journey the Grandmother is trying to persuade her son, Bailey, that it would be a better idea to go to Tennessee. She wanted to go there so that she would be able to see family. She had also come up with the perfect excuse because there was a person, “The Misfit”, who had escaped from a correctional institute and headed south. As the story progresses, you soon are shown how rude the children actually are. They constantly say things that they honestly feel, even if they knew that it might hurt somebody’s feelings. O’Connor also really pushes this point by overstating certain traits of people that make them different.
Southern Gothic literature has rooted itself in American culture and created several classic short stories that have pushed literary boundaries and minds. Among the most influential of these Southern Gothic stories is “A Rose for Emily”, by William Faulkner; “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “Good Country People”, both by Flannery O’Connor. After first discussing what characteristics make up the genre of Southern Gothic, each of these stories will be evaluated and discussed in terms of what makes each of them a prime example of Southern Gothic literature.
“A Rose for Emily” is a Southern Gothic short story written by William Faulkner. The main character, Miss Emily Grierson, has a story and personality that can be analyzed from many different viewpoints. Focusing more on the psychological perspective, Miss Emily is very erratic and idiosyncratic in behavior. She isolates herself in her home and locks up her house to prevent anyone from coming in. Her home hides many secrets, but the one that stands out the most is the corpse of Homer Barron, Miss Emily’s lover. For years, Miss Emily has lived and slept with the corpse, which was unknown for many years by all the townspeople. After this is discovered, Miss Emily’s mental health and stability became the main topic of interest to both the townspeople and the readers of this story.
The short story A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner first comes off as a disturbing story. When you realize that Miss Emily Grierson, who is the main character in this story, kills the man she’s though to be in love with, all you can really think is that she’s crazy. I think the conflict in the story is Miss Emily not being able to find love. With her father not giving her a chance to date, thinking that there was no one good enough for her. Then, the only man she has been able to love dies, which is her father. Once she has fallen “in love”, she murders her lover. Miss Emily’s necessity for love has caused her to be unable to distinguish fantasy with reality.
