Space Exploration Dangerous

For many years humans have been exploring space to discover the unknown and fuel their curious and adventurous nature, but the decision of whether space exploration is worth the cost is strongly debated. Due to various arguments and evidence space exploration is strongly supported is proven to be worth the cost. Some of these reasons include space exploration being able to expand our knowledge and it being able to generate wealth. With these reasons the argument of whether space exploration is worth the risk can be easily decided.

To go to space, we have to buy everything our president owns 76 times ($230 billion dollars). Going to space would cost so much money, and that money can be used here on Earth. Also, there are many unknowns and health issues in the barren space of space. We should NOT go to Mars, it is a stupid decision.

Along with the technological advances and new theories of the last century, humans have developed a need to explore beyond the known of the final frontier. This resource of knowledge has led to superstitions and concerns about what could happen if people pursue this want of space exploration. Among these concerns are national finances, the world’s health, and ethical standpoints of what really could be waiting on the other side for those who dare venture into the unknown.

Added to the economic costs to America, a venture to Mars causes substantial risk to the society. The environment and society are very important to human survival on Earth. Even though some people feel that exploring Mars may help understand the Earth better, and going to Mars will be a great scientific milestone, in my opinion exploring Mars is a bad idea. The atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than earth and it is not suitable for us to breath. It contains about 95% of carbon dioxide and little or no oxygen. This will make it very difficult for humans to survive there. Unlike Mars, which is not protected and is exposed to everything, the Earth is protected by the ozone layer. Exploring Mars will be dangerous to humans and very expensive to taxpayers. This will take years of planning and the mission will take years instead of days. The astronauts who go there may run out of oxygen and even fall sick. They will be unable to just return at any time. They have to wait until the earth aligns with Mars before they can return. To begin, it is expensive and that there are risks for going into space. In “ From packing for Space” they say that it is expensive because its 500 billion dollars. This is important because it would be most of our valuable resources going into the fund. In “ Neil De Grasse” it says that it would be very expensive and it has a lot of risks. This is important because we would be putting astronauts in danger and putting money into something dangerous.

Although space exploration is now being emphasized on and invested in, what does this do to benefit earth or even every individual who lives on Earth? Many writers, engineers, mathematicians, and chemists can agree that space exploration is going to provide more research for medicine and environmental factors. Others may also argue that the risks of exploring another planet will be too damaging because the life or atmosphere as it is will not be the same after humans have made their print on it.

In fact, a number of scientists say that of all things boredom is one of the biggest threats to a manned mars mission. If we continue on with space travel, many more people may die. Is is worth risking lives to explore the unknown during high risk missions? From 1967 to 2003, NASA had 3 disasters, resulting in the death of 17 people (one being a citizen). When confronted with the restraints that space programs have when studying certain topics in space, safety should be a number one priority. It is ethically wrong to send astronauts into space, without informing them of the risks of their mission. NASA should also weigh the risks of the mission with the anticipated outcome to decide if it ethically acceptable to go through the mission at all.

The first reason exploration is worth the risk is medical research. Medical research is very important and John F. Kennedy couldn’t have explained it better. Stated in Remarks at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center “Examinations of the astronaut’s physical, and mental, and emotional reactions can teach us more about the differences between normal and abnormal.” This evidence shows that space exploration could help us tell the difference between normal and anomalous. Another thing that Kennedy greatly stated in Remarks at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center was “About the causes and effects of disorientation, about changes in metabolism which could result in extending the life span.” So this evidence shows that space exploration could help us extending the human

The amount of accomplishments America has achieved in the area of space research is staggering. We have sent man to the moon, landed rovers, and discovered uncountable celestial bodies just by telescope! There are many benefits of space exploration, making it absolutely worth the cost. Some of these benefits are creating new beneficial jobs, and expanding our knowledge. While some argue there are drawbacks to space exploration, I think that the benefits outweigh these drawbacks. In addition, we desire to explore the unknown. As Georgia Douglass Johnson said the the poem “Your World”, in stanza 1 “Your world is as big as you make it”. This means that we can do whatever we want, as long as we’re determined.

What the argument fails to consider, is that other things are becoming safer for most people because of space exploration. “ Clothes and vehicle interiors are more fire resistant because of research after the Apollo fire. Weather forecasting is much more accurate because of satellite monitoring. Monitoring from space can detect forest fires, oil spills, aquifer depletion, downed aircraft, etc.” (Fowler) Safety is one thing that space exploration has given people, and that is one of the best things you can have in life. After all, space exploration can help protect us from dangerous situations, prepare us for disasters, and even save lives in the long run. Mankind has always been fascinated with exploring the unknown. From sailing to distant lands to someday setting foot on other planets, the spirit of exploration is the same. Bur now with the current economic situation and the high cost of sending people to space, NASA is being looked at as a way to free up some much needed funds. Although, there is many problems here on planet Earth that need addressing, the benefits of space exploration far out weight the disadvantages. Space exploration has given us more advanced technology, advances in the medical field, and a boost to the economy and these facts cannot be disputed.

You hear a lot of people saying that space research is cool but it is typically a waste of money and valuable resources that could be used to benefit our own planet and the many problems that we have all over earth today. But I completely, one hundred percent agree on the further exploration of space for different reasons such as: we are living in a virtual age where everything is done with smart phones and computers and physical exploration is much needed. Second it can actually help the economy in multiple ways not just waste money. Lastly It also guarantees the development of good technology, not only with companies, but among the younger people who need to be inspired through the educational systems we have in America.
