Prior to the start of the week I was excited to be out of the classroom and working with patients. My clinic is in National City, which is about 15 miles from the border. I have been practicing Spanish on Rosetta Stone in my preparation that I would encounter a Spanish only speaker. Sure enough the first evaluation that I was able to assist in this week spoke only Spanish. Here was my chance to utilize my costly Rosetta Stone. While assessing a patient’s ability to bridge I asked him “lavante su nalgas” which I thought translated into “lift up your buttocks”, but actually translated into borderline profanity. We all laughed and it turned into a good icebreaker with the family. They expressed their appreciation for my attempt to establish report
In the field of Modern Languages and Linguistics, words are of great importance. A language’s phonology (study of how sounds are organized and used), morphology (study of the form and structure of words), syntax (study of the rules that govern sentence structure), semantics (study of meaning of words, sentences, and expressions), pragmatics (study of aspects of meaning and language use and context), and phonetics (study of human speech sounds) all play an important part in everyday life. These have a major impact in understanding the intent of what is spoken or heard. Due to the importance of communication, literary elements such as metaphors (which are defined as a figure of speech in which a word or phrase

I attended the Required Live Class for Unit 1 on Jun 23 from 6-7pm. My teacher was Erin Melo and we reviewed major concepts of Spanish I and II. Together, we went over reflexive verbs, differences between ser and estar, saber vs. conocer, preterite, imperfect, por vs. para, and gustar. Something new that Mrs. Melo taught me is the acronym HOGSWEAT (Habitual, Ongoing, Growing up, Setting the scene, Weather, Emotions, Age and Time), where each letter stands for a use of the imperfect. This is going to help me a lot, especially since I’m unfamiliar with the imperfect tense. She also reviewed the use of reflexive terms, which was very beneficial to me. I was also confused on differentiating saber between conocer and she explicitly explained when
The Spanish conquistadors’ motives greatly affected the people living in the new world. These motives influenced the Native Americans in all different ways some ways better or bigger than others. Three of the biggest motives that effected the Native Americans were gold, Christianity, and glory.
Spanish is the most common second language in the world and the most popular language taught in the United States schools. One reason it seems Spanish is the most popular second language, is over 20 countries claim it as their first language and over 400 million people speak it. More people on earth today speak two or more languages. With numbers like that it seems we all should learn a little bit of this popular language.
The average patient may not glean much information from the standard written hand out they receive for health education. I observed a Chinese cardiologist with an accent that was undecipherable, draw a patient a picture of the hearts electrical conduction system. Instantly, this wary patient was totally on board with the physician burning a part of his heart during the heart ablation. The picture spoke a thousand words to this patient. Now, tell how you will attempt to learn more about intervening when other staff exhibit inappropriate behaviors culturally. Also address another area of need, learning key words and colloquialisms of another language. -0.75 point.
The discovery of the New World sent social, political, and economic shockwaves throughout the entire globe. With the European powers competing for world dominance, the New World became a battle field to control a new regions resources as well as it’s thoughts and ideas. As this unparalleled contested winded down to a close, England and Spain had secured it’s influence in the Americas and greatly influenced it’s foundational ethos.
I gained a deeper understanding of my own privileges, such as being “white passing”, Latina and heterosexual. I understand that with having some privileges may bring some shame. I plan to write my own shame story in order to empower myself and become an effective and a strategic ally. I also felt insecure during the training, because a lot of the trainees were activist and I’m just a student; however, I plan to use this insecurity as a source of motivation to become more knowledgeable about social justice issues. This training also built an intense curiosity on looking at media conversations about racial issues and how white liberal racism is present in many media outlets.
For my Spanish 1 Assignment I’m stating if learning a new language a good or
My preceptor and I entered Mr. M’s room to do an assessment, writing on his board what we were doing. He responded on the dry-erase board with something my nurse and I could not read. We left the room seeking a translator who knew BSL to help with the communication problem. The hospital did not have a BSL translator working that day, but my preceptor did find a nurse that knew a few signs to interpret. The doctor approached my nurse asking how we were communicating with Mr. M and why there was not a
Before 1600, the encomenderos and other Spaniards paid for all of these trade goods with gold and silver, and occasionally traded them for foodstuffs like chocolate, corn, and potatoes. And in an age where ship sailing was the only way to get around, the Spanish made sure to prevent the production of goods, such as hemp for rope, canvas for sails, and tar for sealing ships. Nonetheless, the Spanish economy suffered as an imbalance of trade grew in the New World. A solution to this issue was slavery. Many Natives died in the early years of the Spanish rule so there were very few people left to work. Since the Spaniards had no intention of doing anything themselves, they began to import slaves from Africa in around 1502. By giving Spanish
I struggled with reading and understanding the discussion board assignments this week. Many times, I became frustrated and felt that I was wasting time trying to digest the texts. My efforts helped me realize what it would be like to be a non-native speaker in another country. In many situations, meaning would be lost because the whole concept is not understood and absorbed. Fortunately, I was able to understand some of the Spanish in Anzaludua’s piece because of the context and the familiarity of some of the words, but at other times, it was impossible. Watching the Harry Potter piece, I realized that some of the small details that complete J.K. Rawlings stories are lost because no translation or equivalent exists in
Barrientos wanted to eliminate the Spanish stereotype and integrate into the caucasian community. The Spanish natives were perceived as dangerous radicals that typically were poor. She was segregated from others by not having mineral jobs waiting tables and cleaning hotel rooms like most native Spanish
Guillermo is making common mistakes that many English language learners make. He needs to work on his sentence structure and his grammar. Guillermo has limited abilities to communicate his thoughts, so it is very important that he learns to form more complex sentences in order to communicate his ideas more completely. His writing, as well as his speaking consists of short sentences, where he omits or uses wrong words a lot of the time. These mistakes make his writing and speaking choppy and unnatural. For example, one of his sentences reads, “our family cooks special food of Guatemala for celebration.” If this sentence was written in correct English it would read, “Our family cooks special Guatemalan food for the celebration.” He has a lot
Cuba is an island nation that was adopted in 1902. One third of it consists of mountains and rolling hills. It lies in the West Indies, and is said to be a beautiful island. Havana is Cuba’s capital, and the center of government for Cuba. Some important cities are Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey. Santiago de Cuba is near the south-eastern area of Cuba, and has a population of about half a million people. It’s considered the second most important city in Cuba, probably because it’s an important sea port. Camagüey is the fourth largest city in Cuba, according to Wikipedia. The symbol of Camagüey is a clay pot, mainly because there are clay pots everywhere. They can be very small, or very big. They’re used to capture rainwater to be
