In addition to getting my Spanish Associate degree this upcoming spring, I have recently tutored High School students for the last two summers. And have taken all the classes and preparation necessary to help student’s improve and master their culture language as well as English. During this time I have also assisted a couple of teachers log student-graded material into the grading system, as well as grading the assignments myself. I also had multiple tasks at the main office such as making copies and handled parent- teacher messages. During parent conferences the office has requested for my assistance to translate.

This year I will be helping out at the primary again, and I will also volunteer to be a translator for the parents. The only difference being that I will actually be more one-to-one with a 2nd grader, helping learn her English. I was overjoyed when I was offered this opportunity, I couldn’t wait to get started. I also couldn’t wait to get started with a new project I started at school. The step forward that I took was that I started my own program at my school, the unique factor being that it’s a spanish based after school study table. The goal of the program is to help out the students who are having trouble in class because they don’t know as much English.
For the past six years, I have had the privilege of sharing my first language, Spanish, and Spanish culture as a teacher at a small private elementary school in a small rural town where diversity is almost non-existent. It has been a pleasure to open up a window to the outside world in the classrooms of this school where the students and I get to explore Spanish culture and language without having to leave town. My experience sharing my culture as well as my bilingual skills, however, extends beyond the elementary school classroom. Prior to teaching Spanish at the elementary school level, I worked as a Spanish-English translator and interpreter at various companies, and I also taught Spanish to adults.
A week before I submitted this application, I asked my teacher, Alicia Pentz-Lopez, for assistance on an essay.

I have decided to pursue a certificate of Spanish for health professionals as well. Thanks to Sunbelt Apopka I came to this realization and more. As a current 5th grade teacher through Teach for America and Masters’ candidate at the Relay Graduate School of Education, I believe I would be an excellent fit for the English Teaching Assistantship in Brazil. Raised myself in a bilingual household, my experience teaching English as a Second Language students in Passaic, New Jersey has strengthened my language skills. Teaching in a bilingual classroom (English and Spanish), I teach a range of students: some only speak their native language while other students are quickly approaching proficiency in English. This has helped me switch between English and Spanish seamlessly—and guide others to do the same, a skill I would like to bring to learners in Brazil. Further, I am now capable of helping others think metacognitively about the process. In addition to being fluent in English and Spanish, I have taken on Portuguese to be my third language. Although I have conversational skills now, I am hoping to reach the intermediate level in the next year and greatly boost these skills through interactions in Brazil. I chose this program because I believe that knowing Spanish will enable me to become a better person, a better global citizen, and a better teacher. In the past, I had the privilege of working, in my community, with ESL students whose families were unfamiliar with the American school system and recently with the daughter of one of my friends from Mexico. My friend, even after 20 years in the U.S., barely speaks English and because of that she can only work as a housekeeper. Her daughter is sixteen years of age, she never finished secondary school in Mexico and she does not speak English. Her mom decided to find her a job in the housekeeping industry and to not send her to school
One manner in which I have helped the Hispanic Chamber achieve its mission is by serving as a translator for the workers in the kitchen who are unable to communicate fluently in English. This has proven to be a very valuable asset of mine as it allows the managers and crew members to coexist more smoothly and work more efficiently. This experience has also taught me to become grateful for the many values the other workers in the kitchen have instilled within me, including: hard-work, perseverance, and punctuality. Additionally, I have been able to offer advice to the other Latinos at my job about any questions they may have regarding the American education system. This includes providing them with different resources and contact information for information on colleges, scholarships, financial aid, etc. Lastly, I have also assisted the other workers by retelling my father's experiences coming to America and the many obstacles he has encountered throughout his life in order to achieve the success he has garnered today. Mrs. Eloise Forbes is the Spanish teacher here at Amory High School. She has been teaching at Amory for ten years. Because Mrs. Forbes was so interested in high school to learn Spanish, that when she got out of high school she moved to Costa Rica and then Spain to learn Spanish, so she could become a Spanish teacher. She teaches Spanish I at the Middle School and High School, and she also teaches a couple of Spanish II classes. The difference in Spanish I and Spanish II is that Spanish I in completely new to the students and Spanish II is just an expansion of Spanish I and you just go way more in-depth with each skill.
