Nearly 11.6 million immigrants from Mexico reside in the United States according to the 2013 ACS, accounting for 28 percent of all USA immigrants. Out of these Mexican immigrants willing to live a life with constant fear of deportation just for the American Dream, were four undocumented boys. Oscar, Luis, Christian and Lorenzo all born in Mexico, immigrated to America to live a better life filled with many opportunities. All four boys migrated to phenol Arizona where they lived below the poverty line. After entering in a robotics team in their high school (Carl Hayden) they competed in the Marine Advanced Technology Education Robotics Competition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. They worked hard with a budget of only nine-hundred dollars, overcoming many challenging obstacles to create their ROV underwater robot dubbed Stinky. With the help of two amazing teachers, they won first place against some of the nation’s best engineering students including a team from MIT, and they knew that it was only the beginning of their future. Amazed by their story, Joshua Davis based his novel Spare Parts on their incredible journey. …show more content…
According to the novel Spare Parts, with little time left until the start of the competition, the Carl Hayden robotics team had a leak in their ROV. “The robot wasn’t working and the kids were scheduled to go in front of the NASA and NAVY experts within hours. Stinky was turning out to be a failure from the outset.’’ However, since the 4 boys possessed the characteristic of perseverance they believed they would be able to repair their robot and they did. “‘Let’s take it apart’ he argued. ‘We can fix it.’’’ … “‘Look, don’t worry about the robot. We have all night to fix it’.” These two quote show how failure comes before success and therefore you need to have

Imagine that you had to start at a new school, without knowing anybody. You are a talented artist, but you are shy and don't like to share you work. This is what Jade had to do in the book “Piecing Me Together”.
In the novel, All the Broken Pieces, by Ann E. Burg, Matt makes a comparison between himself and his brother when he defines his brother as “summer” and himself as “fall”. This metaphor can be explained not only by their physical features, but their emotional and mental characteristics as well. His brother features summer and hasn’t faced any misery, while he himself looks like fall and has come across atrocious things.
Jimmy knows too well the agonies of abandonment. First, when his mother, Cecilia, ran away with Richard to pursue a better lifestyle. Then, due to his father’s, Damacio Baca, alcoholisms and violent behavior; he also had to leave Jimmy behind. In spite of the drawbacks from abandonment to being a maximum security prisoner in Arizona State Prison, Jimmy preserver’s the darkness of prison by overcoming his illiteracy. However Cecilia and Damacio is not as fortunate as their child; Cecilia is shot by Richard after confronting him for a divorce and Damacio chokes to death after he is released from the detox center(Baca 263). Therefore the most significant event in this section of the memoir, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca is the death of Jimmy’s parents.
There is no right or wrong answer to what one believes is the American Dream. It is simply an opinion that anyone and everyone can have, no matter what race one is, where one comes from, or what language one speaks. In the story Spare Parts by Joshua Davis, four teenagers from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Arizona, strive to fulfill their ambitions and hopes. My version of the American Dream is to live life to the fullest, in Spare Parts the American Dream is to be treated as humans, not Mexican Americans. Both versions of the American Dream has numerous similarities and connections.
In general, the idea of the American Dream is to achieve prosperity and everlasting success through hard work and dedication. Although this is the norm, many people have their own unique idea of what the American Dream is based on how they were raised and what they believe success is. For one person success could be to live in a mansion, while for others it may be to live in a cardboard box. An example of the general idea is in the novel Spare Parts by Joshua Davis, where four teens are out to chase after the American Dream. While the example in the novel is very general, I have my own vision of what the American Dream is.
In the book Spare Parts by Joshua Davis and Fighting our Goliaths by Rabbi Will Berkovits, the idea of an underdog as the authors explore the importance of inner beauty, sacrifice, and hardship. No matter what color you are or what kind of world you grew up in. But is it because of the color of our skin or the amount of money that we have in our pockets that influence the judgment of others? Or is it the strength and intelligence that we hold on the inside that truly describes who we are? Rabbi argues that beauty isn't always on the outside but is being held on the inside. “Its true beauty was always there, but locked away like so much hidden human potential” ( Rabbi 1.) The idea that everyone is special and unique is a term used by many but
Mainly, in the book we learn that team work is important. Right of the bat we are introduced to one of the main characters and one of the conflicts that the characters’ face throughout the story. Oscar Vazquez a young man who tries to enroll in the united states army is denied such action because of his residential status. All four characters, Oscar, Cristian, Lorenzo and Luis are undocumented who face their own obstacles. However, all four of them come together as a team to compete in the Marine Advanced Technology Education Robotics Competition. They proved to one another that, without one of them their goal to win the completion was going to be complicated. For example, without Vazquez, the team would have lost perseverance and determination, he was the one who brought the team together and carried the team with optimism till the end. He made the impossible possible for the sake of the team. For example, when it was time for the team to gather the money to buy the material
The book Beyond The Pale is about Two ordinary people (Travis Wilder and Grace Beckett) who get transported to this new and magic filled world that resembles earths medieval times. With there new found powers they hope to save this new world from its impending doom. (The pale king and his iron heart followers). I choose to write about Grace for my character analysis because I admire her intelligence, her cleverness, and her independent nature. Grace is intelligent because she always had a plan.
Born deaf and blind, the author Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, the mentally tough Louis Zamperini breathed these words when he survived what no other man would want to experience, his World War II bomber crashing into the Pacific Ocean and was stranded adrift on a raft for forty-seven days. Needless to say, Louis’s insurmountable circumstances encouraged him to strengthen his soul and return home. In doing so he became a hero and a better man.
In Toni Morrison's short story "Recitatif", the story revolves around two girls, one white and the other black, and how their social status affects their way of life. The narrator, Twyla, has five significant instances in her life where she is in a setting with her childhood best friend, Roberta. When they first met at the orphanage, they disliked each other, but because both of them still had a parent to their name, they were seen as social outcasts to the other children of their orphanage. Through their social disgrace they became friends and helped each other out. As they grew up, their lives were distinctly different with Twyla living the life of a lower-middle class citizen while Roberta was living a lavish lifestyle, creating conflict between the two. In the end, there is a slight sense of reconcilement in that they clear up a misunderstanding of their past, but there is an open question to what had happened to an element of their past.
Click, clack, click, clack the unknown child walks down stairs and wanders out the front door. There are plenty of logical reasons behind why Neil Gaiman selected not to reveal Bod's name before he came to the graveyard. One possible reason is that he wanted the readers to see Bod as being the unknown child when he wandered into the graveyard. Having the name Nobody doesn't connect Bod to his old life. The name Nobody describes Bod perfectly. Nobody knew who Bod was when he came to the graveyard, and still the only a few people that know him live in the graveyard.. He is not known as being the child whose family was murdered. When Bod the unknown child came to live with the forgotten people and started his new life, Bod was separated from
