Spartan Strengths

Spartans military was a hard core and well rounded out military in its time. Part of the reason why they were so successful is because of their rigorous training each boy had to go through. Why I said boy is because the Spartan military training would start at age 7 for a chosen boy. The boy gets chosen to live in spartan society at birth. If the Spartans did not believe that the boy would be rounded out for their society they would leave the boy to die. During the boys training hazing and fighting was encouraged to help improve strength among the boys. During spartan training each boy was mainly taught mathematics, music, and how to fight. Also during their training, they would learn how to steal but without getting caught. If they were caught they would not be punished for stealing but only for getting caught. This type of training continues until the boys would become men. Which is at the age of 20 for the Spartan's. At age 20 Spartan men would have to pass a series of demanding

If caught, the boys were punished usually being beaten up however, they were never punished for the act of stealing. All these details cement Spartans as fearless beasts that are ready to take on any opposition in front of them in the war scene.

In no other city-state did women enjoy the same freedom and status as Spartan women. The progressing city-state of Sparta was infamous for many things. Sparta was known for its powerful army, strict guidelines, and eccentric values. Due to these unique characteristics, residents of Sparta had to keep up to continue its legacy. Being a resident of Sparta meant taking numerous risks yet for reasonable causes. These risks were taken for the progression of the city state. Risks included krypteia mindlessly killing Helots to prevent them from rebelling. Despite this lack of respect for human life, Sparta had atoned for this by providing relevant teachings for women and lessons on survival. Sparta, being a city state with a small population , was primarily focused on winning battles. Thus they perpetrated many feats that were meant to benefit this major cause. Although there was a lack of respect for human life in Sparta, the strengths of a Spartan education are clearly greater than its weaknesses because of the education provided for women and teachings on survival.

1st-         A positive aspect of the Spartan Code was the idea to train their young beginning at a young age, by giving power to the state to control the youth. This allowed many of the children to have an equal opportunity in the situation given although they did not have many options. They could all be taught the same concepts, and this would create more unity among the people which was very important, although the method by which they took action upon this was somewhat controversial.

The poetry of Tyrtaeus illustrated and explained Spartan culture, ethics, values and ethos by highlighting their nobleness, bravery, and strength. He stated that citizens only boasted and fought when they were able to stay fearless and valiant through times of chaos and panic. “For none can boast...maintain a hero’s part / Unless he fearless and intrepid bear” (Tyrtaeus, Martial Elegies, Elegy 1). Every citizen, even the honored fighters, were humble, equal and shared everything with the other citizens. They had the qualities of a fighter and the ability to make it through a war remaining courageous the whole time. Around 800 B.C. the Spartans were founded by Lycurgus and known for their militaristic society. In the late eighth century, Sparta fought in a war with their neighbors in Messinia, but unlike other wars in ancient Greece, the Spartans subjugated the entire population of Messinia, reducing them to helots. These people worked for the Spartans, like slaves, doing everything and anything they asked of them. The male children were taken from their mothers at young ages to serve the state, learning the art of warfare. Spartan life had one purpose and that was meant to defend the state.

Sparta was ruthless. Their army ruled over all others. Sparta a very violent civilization. They had the krypteria who would go out and murder the helots. Although Sparta had a superior army, the weaknesses of Sparta still outweigh the strengths because they were lacking in education, they were very abusive, and they provided the boys with an awfully unfair amount of supplies.

For the Spartans, it didn't matter if you were a woman or a really old man they were all to be treated the same even if you thought you were

There are many aspects of Spartan culture that were important to the success of the city-state. The aspect that I feel most important was the education of the Spartans. According to “History Alive,” the main purpose of education was to produce men and women who could protect the city-state. The importance is that it was vital for the men and women to have some training because it meant that the Spartans had more soldiers to fight. In addition, the women had to run the city-state if men were at war. They also guarded against invaders and revolts from helots. Secondly, the Spartans valued discipline and strength. Sparta was a nation heavily prided on military prowess around 2300 years ago. But to achieve a military of such a high grade you must first go through vigorous training. The modern day United States of America also prides itself on military prowess and has very harsh training for their top troops as well. The weakness of Spartan education outweigh the strengths of Spartan education because they encourage young boys to steal food, they don’t focus on the main subjects like math, and Spartans will kill your weak babies. Normally after the boys are fed the small amount of food they get the leaders encourage them to go and steal the rest of the food they want. On and off the course you are a Spartan, the Spartan Race believes in transforming your life. The race believes in changing your frame of reference, laughing in the face of failure and continuing forward through any obstacle. Each challenge is welcomed and discomfort is embraced. The race encourages you to be active, curious and most of all, human. You become unbreakable. At its core, the race is a test of fitness, will, and strength.
