the purpose of this lab was to find heat capacity and to calculate the specific heat.
A calorimeter is an apparatus for measuring the amount of heat that is involved with chemical reaction or in any other process.
We tried to do our plan and figure out how we are going to do this lab
We got a stirafoam cup and put water in it and heated it up to make room temperature water.
Grab the aluminum and tie it onto the string.
We grabbed a probe and put it inside of our calculator and took the temperature with the probe.
We wrote down our initial temperature
We Put the stirafoam cup on the hot plate and we took the temperature and checked to see if it was at 80 degrees.
If it was at 80 degrees we would take the water off the hotplate and turn the hot plate off and quick put it in the water and cover up the water.
After we wait awhile we put the probe in the water and see if their is a difference to the temperature.
The difference between metals and non-metals is they both have differece properties and Metals is located on the left side of the periodic table and non-metals are located on the right side of the periodic table, and also non-metals are halogens.
If you used a non-metal instead of a metal your answers would be different because you would be mesuriing the temperature of a non-metal in water than a metal.
So the original room initial temperature for mine lab was 23.8 Degrees Ferenheit but if the heat started as 80 degrees ferenheit the water would be getting hotter instead of cooler.
What I learned from this lab is that when you put metal in hot water it does not go up alot the Initial temperature was 23.8 degrees and once we put in the metal it was finished we took the temp and saw the final was 23.9 degrees. That did not go up pretty much it went up like .1 degrees.
