Title: “Devil’s Island” General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Alcatraz. Thesis: This morning, I am going to tell you about the purpose of Alcatraz, some of the famous criminals that were sent there, escape attempts, and the living conditions in the prison. Introduction I. Attention Grabber: Have any of you, if you are open to admit it, ever been to prison? A. Well, I have, but not in the way you would think. B. I went voluntarily on a tour and the prison was actually Alcatraz. II. Credibility and Goodwill: I have always been interested in historic landmarks and structures, and Alcatraz has always been on the top of my list. A. Two summers ago, my family and I went on vacation to California, and one of …show more content…
B. But, because of the island was isolated from other land, and because it had ice cold waters and huge waves, they decided it could be used as a place to hold captives of war. 1. A large cell house was built to hold them, and it started out with only twenty-six captives, but came to hold over four-hundred and fifty. 2. But, operational costs eventually became too high, and in 1934, the Army decided to close the prison, and ownership went to the Department of Justice. C. During this time, mobs and gangs were on the rise. 1. Alcatraz became the new home for these criminals, which was a home that no one would ever want live in. 2. It was remodeled and built so that no one could escape, or so they thought, which I’ll get to in a minute. Transition: As I said, mobs and gangs were on the rise, and this led to the imprisonment of some of the most notorious gangsters. II. According the therichest.com, Alcatraz housed the likes of Machine Gun Kelly and probably the most infamous of all, Al Capone. A. Machine Gun Kelley’s favorite weapon was the Thompson machine gun, hence the name Machine Gun Kelly. 1. He became known for kidnapping Charles F. Urschel, who was a business tycoon in the oil business, and he collected a $200,000 ransom, which was close to $3,000,000 today. 2. He was eventually caught and sent to Alcatraz. B. Al Capone was one of the first inmates sent to Alcatraz. 1. He ran the
In Yoshiko Uchida’s, Desert Exile, she claims, “ Each stall was now numbered, and ours was number 40. That the stalls should have been called “apartments” was a euphemism so ludicrous it was comical” (Uchida 248). Uchida explains her experience in an internment camp, the families were told they would be living in apartments, when, in fact, they would be leaving in old animal barns. Japanese Americans were shipped to the desert, herded into barns to live and forced to wait in lines to eat. Ultimately, these prisoners were treated less than human and more like animals. Although this treatment of the Japanese Americans in the Internment camps was horrible, the conditions in the concentration camps were unpleasant, in Warren’s book, she explains, “Rumors about the war, rumors about upcoming “selections,” when SS officers would weed out the weakest prisoners and ship them off somewhere” (Warren 73). In the same way the prisoners in the Internment camps were treated like animals, the prisoners in the Concentration camps had it way worse . They were so weak they would be picked off to be sent somewhere else, most likely to be killed. Similarly the prisoners in the Concentration camps had it really bad, they barely had a living place like the Japanese prisoners did. They acquire way less, sometimes no food in the Concentration camps but the Japanese people received dessert at one point. Both camps had their ways of being negligent and miserable than the other. All in all the Concentration camps were way worse than the Internment camps, and they both had very inhuman
During the 1920s, organised crime was a major issue plaguing federal authorities, as well as the American people. This took place in most big cities across the United States, particularly in Chicago, Illinois, where gangsters such as Al Capone, Bugs Moran and Johnny Torrio dominated all aspects of life. However, at this time, authorities also faced problems from the government through corruption and scandalous actions.
Al Capone was a highly known gangster in the 1920s Alphonse Capone born in Brooklyn, New York to a poor US immigrant couple, Gabriele and Teresina Capone, seeking a better opportunity for their then big family of eight children. He was known for running many lucrative illegal businesses that included alcohol bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, and protection. Al Capone was so notorious that he would murder those who got in his way. With little prosecution of his actions, Al Capone believed his self to being unstoppable. Al Capone, being raised as a kid in poverty learned hands on how to organize crime and became the biggest force in organized crime.
C. Contrary to what the movies portray, there were no experiments made on the prisoners, and the inmates that were transferred there were already twisted and disturbed; Alcatraz didn’t turn them into monsters. There was however, a dungeon that prisoners were locked in if they misbehaved, and they also had a rule of silence, where they could not
Al Capone is one of the most recognized names in American history. Capone ran the City of Chicago with illegal activities. He appeared many times on newspapers all over the country. Every one of us has heard of Al Capone, but most of us don't k
In 1925, Torrio escaped the mobster business after rival gangs tried to kill him. This left Capone as the leader of the entire operation. After Torrio left, Capone came into the spotlight. He did not stay out of the public eye, and he moved his headquarters in to the Metropole Hotel in downtown Chicago. Capone spent an enormous amount of money, and his business was booming, with an estimation of generating $100 million annually. The press constantly followed Capone, and some of the public saw him as a hero working against the prohibition.(history.com, Al Capone). Although, the picture of Capone as a hero did not last forever, because the public learned his operations were connected with violence.
Prison camps were very brutal and had hard living conditions. There were some prisons that stood out, such as Andersonville, Alton Federal Prison Belle Isle, and Salisbury prison, which was one of the better prisons. Andersonville was not a good prison to be at and it had 45,000 people in the 12 months it was around
Al Capone ran many illegal businesses including bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, racketeering and murders. There were many gangs in the world of organized crime and Al Capone was at the top. Alcatraz Prison can be easily compared to the supermax prison, Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX), in Florence, Colorado, often referred to as the “Alcatraz of the Rockies.” Similarly to
Alcatraz Island has quite a distinct history. Many people know that Alcatraz served as a federal prison, but most are reluctant to know that this island served as fort. Built before the Civil War, it served two main purposes. First, that it was to guard the San Francisco bay area from enemy ships against a foreign invasion, and second, to hold hostage prisoners of war or POW's as they were called. In this report, I'll show you how this fortress came to be a federal prison, why it is no longer in operation today, and most importantly, to show why it was built in the first place. When the great "Gold Rush" of 1849 first started, California grew from what would be considered a small, unpopulated state, into
For my research paper, I have chosen to research the history of Alcatraz. I chose this topic because over the summer my family went to San Francisco, California and we went to Alcatraz. While at Alcatraz, we got to meet an actual prisoner from Alcatraz, William G. Baker. There are three questions that I hope I can answer by the end of my research. First, I would like to know what life was like for the prisoners at Alcatraz and for the children that lived there. Then, I hope to answer how many escape attempts there were. Next, I want to find out if any prisoners survived the escape from Alcatraz. Finally, I want to know why the prison shut down. I do not expect to have any problems with this topic, there should be plenty of information out
Whenever the infamous Alcatraz federal penitentiary is brought up in conversation, the first thoughts that usually come to mind are either their well known impeccable security, harsh treatments, or great escape of 1962. Alcatraz, “The Rock” is almost explicitly known for its’ inescapable walls, with countless attempted and failed attempts, and one believed success. Whether or not the men who escaped from their cold, dark cells that fateful night survived or perished in the frigid waters off of the San Francisco bay has been a great debate, even well after the prison's closing in March of 1963, less than a year after the great escape. It is a common misconception that the men who escaped made it across the bay to freedom. Regardless of their
Alcatraz Island or also known as “The Rock” for being located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay was a federal maximum-security prison operating from 1934 to 1963. Alcatraz housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals and mobsters during its time period. In fact, according to the Article “Alcatraz” by History.com “Among those who served time at the maximum-security facility was the notorious gangster Al “Scarface” Capone (1899-1947) and murderer Robert “Birdman of Alcatraz” Stroud (1890- 1963)”. Although, Alcatraz Island is one of the most well-known federal prison it was first used as a military prison during 1850-1933.
I hope you have been having a nice summer, and that things are going well? During my committee meeting we discussed my idea for the first chapter as having a focus on the social and historical aspect of invasive house rodents on islands. I have narrowed that idea down to problematization. Using a historical approach I would like to focus on when did we start to define mice on islands as a problem. Where I need help is in where to go next with my idea. I can use books including Rat Island and other articles to explore the issue, but I think I need help in the details and how I can answer this question I have.I'm not sure about your schedule but I have time next Thursday the 6th. in the afternoon or I am free the 11th,12th. in the afternoon.
Alcatraz was a prison for the worst criminals of the time. They went through physical and physiological torture as they were held in cages and served their sentence. However some punishments may have been excessive for the crime committed. One example is Philip Grosser.
