In 1950, Gregory Pincus and John Rock developed the first birth control pill. The pill is made of synthetic hormones like the ones that occur naturally in your body. Women can regulate their cycle, manage family size, and reduce the risk of ovarian cancer with the birth control pill. Before safe and effective contraception was developed women in ancient times used their own forms of barriers to prevent pregnancy. These included potions, charms, herbal recipes, and chants. According to kidshealth.org, the birth control pill is a daily pill that contains hormones to change the body in order to prevent pregnancy. The hormones in the pill, estrogen and progestin, control the ovaries and the uterus. The pill prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening the mucus around the cervix, and thinning the lining of the uterus. Birth control pills come in either a twenty-one day pack or a twenty-eight day pack. One pill is taken each day around the same time for twenty-one days. Depending on the pack a woman is prescribed, she will either stop taking birth control pills for seven days or will take a pill that contains no hormones for seven days.
