The environment. It provides us with so much but we don’t care. It provides us with oxygen, medicine, leisure and protection but we don’t care. We destroy as much of the environment as we feel like and nobody cares. Nobody wants it to be their problem. Politicians ignore the problem and the public believe that it’s the politicians’ problem when really it is down to both the public and politicians to change. As grade twelves we believe that the problem isn’t ours, that it is for someone else to fix but there is so much that we can change about our everyday lifestyle that can help improve and care for the environment around us.
When it comes to waste, Australia is one of the worst in the world. In Australia the average person generates 4.1kg per day, that amount of waste equates to 1.5 tonnes of waste per year, this is the average weight of a car. 40% of the waste in the average household bin is food this is equivalent to 1 in 5 bags of groceries going into the bin. We need to stop that food from going to landfill. And you’re probably thinking how do we stop this waste? We need to be less fussy. If your apple has got a bruise just eat around it or cut out the area you don’t want. Another answer to that is easy we start to compost. Composting allows use of otherwise useless scraps and provides a free fertiliser that is great for the garden.
Plastics are another common item that ends up in bins. There are so many plastic bags in the world that they decided to go and colonise
Waste is a world-wide problem, with food waste being the main contender. In the United
Nowadays, in Australia, 240 dollars are being wasted per person and per year, reaching the 5% of the Australian food expenses (Baker et. al. 2009, cited in Pearson, Minehan & Wakefield-Rann
A. Attention Getter – The uninhabitable Earth, is what we`ll soon be called. Anticipating what the exact effects will be on mankind and other living organisms on planet Earth is tricky, however, a continuously growing amount of evidence suggest that it will be intense. In its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.
“Globally, we throw out about 1.3 billion tons of food a year, or a third of all the food that we grow” (Sengupta). In the United States 33% is from agriculture, 11% from postharvest, 10% from processing, 8% from retail, and 39% from consumption. Consumers are the majority of our waste, but there's not a lot of ways to prevent this.
Food waste causes enormous economic losses; food is wasted at the production and consumer level. Did you know that in the span of five years, the economic cost of food waste rose by $2.8 billion? Yes, from $5.2 billion in 2009 to $8 billion in 2014. It is ridiculous! You are contributing to food waste, an issue that impacts us financially and environmentally. It’s almost like Australians are not struggling in managing their homes. This money can be put to use; rent, transport, clothing and recreation costs can be covered. How many of us fill our plates at dinner only to throw away a large portion of it? How many of us fill our trolleys with the week’s grocery despite knowing it will not be eaten? We reason with ourselves that a little bit of food can hardly do any harm. Think again. Every household in Australia has a similar practice pertaining to food waste so imagine the mass of that. In recent years, the demand for food has increased drastically, causing Australian farms to produce more food. Our hard-earned money is used to purchase food which unfortunately ends up as waste. In addition, the convenience associated with
Food waste is one of the biggest problems that affect the environment and wastes precious resources in Australia faces that needs to be stopped
In Australia, we’re lucky enough to have systems in place to make recycling as easy as possible. Recycling has become a part of our everyday life, but what would our future look like without it.
Now is the time to take promptly bold actions to prevent the worst of climate change and tackle the wider environmental crisis that are already inevitable! One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln took some bold actions when he addressed the US Congress in a letter saying: “The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.” By all means, he stood before the Congress to confront a major issue of his time: Slavery. Back then, it was obvious that everybody knew it had to come to an end, but no one had the
Paper products are frequently wasted at home and at work. Discarded newspapers and old grocery bags is one example of wasted paper. The solution to saving paper is easy just take all of your old paper products to a local recycling center. Another piece of thrash that is wasted often is glass. Old pickle jars, mayonnaise jars, and jelly jars are thrown away carelessly in the trash when they can easily be washed and reused or recycled. The last piece of garbage that is frequently wasted is plastic. Plastic is wasted very often in milk cartons, soda bottles, and most other containers. Plastic is probably the most wasted thing that we use. Ether washing or reusing can easily conserve plastic. You can also recycle plastic like the other two things. Wasting of glass, paper, and plastic can be prevented if people would take the time to recycle.
Australians are the second highest waste producers in the world. Around 10 million tonnes of waste is produced annually, with half of that could be recycled and and another 3 million tonnes of that wasted being food. It is evident that some people in our society take our earth's resources for granted and either waste products or simply just buy too much. The world we are living in today is highly consumerist, media and technology control our everyday lives and this ultimately affects our treatment of the environment.
The Environmental Protection Agency released the ‘Advancing Sustaining Materials Management: 2014 Fact Sheet’ in November of 2016 and Americans produce 4.4 pounds of trash every single day.
-The contaminated bags in many instances have WTE plant trash that are sent out to the supplier ( picture attached).
“we know that the costs of these events can be measured in lost lives and lost livelihoods, lost homes, lost businesses, hundreds of billions of dollars in emergency services and disaster relief. In fact, those who are already feeling the effects of climate change don’t have time to deny it -- they’re busy dealing with it.”(Barack Obama, ) To what extent should the U.S. government alleviate climate change in America .Climate change can affect our country through a number of factors cultural, social and natural. However what is being done to cut down pollution, global warming and any other factors of climate change that is hazardous to our country are all the perspectives that are into consideration when trying to find a solution to this worldly problem. How the alleviates climate change and do what needs to be done determines the sustainability of America for future generations.

Since as far back as I can remember, my parents always taught me to properly dispose of my trash. As I grew up, I, however, realized that many others did not receive or appreciate the same lesson I was taught as a child. Trash and garbage can be nasty items, and the improper disposal of garbage in public places and our environment is a serious problem disguised as a small issue. Personally, littering angers and disgusts me. The idea that someone is careless enough to throw trash literally anywhere is concerning; additionally, when you take a deeper look, littering is accompanied by some major impacts. Littering is a momentous issue with major impacts that are typically unseen by many people.
