Let’s Talk Success In 2014, many of America’s political education leaders met at a national education summit in Washington, D.C. to discuss ways to improve the nation’s drop out record. In total, 22 states signed a pledge to improve their graduation rates. Each year the Department of Education releases a report with the national statistics on the number of students who drop out from public K-12 education. Despite the plethora of accurate statistics on the number of students leaving school there are various reasons attributed to why less than $200,000 of federal money has been devoted to researching the causes. This leads to the question that many educators like myself have: how do we stop students from dropping out? A report from U.S.…show more content…
Some of those notable factors include; poverty, homelessness, learning disabilities, being pregnant, mental health issues, drug addiction, and home life issues. Any teachers, school staff member, or outside counselor may submit information about a student that can put them on the “at-risk list.” In many states, the filing method is a written report. However, nowhere on the report does it have a section to log any troubling language used by students. For example, if a student said “this stuff is stupid. I don’t need to know this,” there is no reporting method for it. This would be important information for an educator to know because the negative feelings on a subject has been proven to correlate to low effort and lower grades in that area. Consequently, diction could be a warning sign of a student who would be more likely to drop out. During the 1980’s American high school graduation rates plummeted across the country, with an average of 10% per state. The response to the declining graduation rates set a foundation for research into which factors cause and can prevent students from dropping out.
