During speech class this semester, I gave several different types of speeches on several different topics. During this semester, my ability to give speeches in front of an audience has improved quite a bit, I hope. Going into the semester, I had a really hard time giving speeches to people, but now that speech is almost over I feel like I am more capable of doing so. I think the thing I did best during the semester was getting good information for each of my speeches. My favorite assignment was most likely the impromptu speech. I really liked that one because we did not have to prepare an outline or anything like that, we just got to go up there and speak. During this semester, I learned a lot about how to give speeches such as the proper way to stand so I do not rock, or how to use my hands to emphasize my points. In the future, I think that I will be able to control my speed better during my speeches which will help the people I am presenting to understand my message. I think the skills I have acquired during speech will help me for the rest of my life. No matter what career I choose, I am sure that at some point I will have to present to someone about something. The skills I learned in speech will also help me just communicate with people in a one on one situation easier than I do now. I can use these skills throughout the rest of high school and through my six years of college still to come because whenever I have to present a project I will know how to effectively communicate my message to my audience.
Based off of all of my reflection sheets, video evaluations, and peer critiques I have improved over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester I had a problem with speed and using to many “filler” words. As the year progressed, my speed became more and more controllable and I used less and less filler words. After my most recent speech, I’m still not quite at the level I want to be at, but I am far better than I was at the very beginning. I think just speaking in front of people more than I am used to doing has helped me develop better speaking skills and grow in my ability to effectively communicate with others. Writing was never a known weakness of mine. However, I could never confidently call it a strength. Throughout the course of this semester, my writing style has evolved and I have rid my writing of many habitual mistakes. I have learned to appreciate writing much more, and enjoy the moments where my mind meets words on a paper. Creativity has always been one of my strong suits, but through this course I catered my creativity to compose a variety of essays and speeches. Likewise, public speaking is something that I did not struggle with in the past, yet the structure of the class required a video speeches which was fairly new to me. All in all, I have been able to identify and modify gaps in my composition of writing and speech as a result of this course.
During the speech, I was also a good speaker in many ways. I had a good voice projection, my hand moment was consistent, I was always facing the audience and held eye contact, and had facial expressions to emphasize the importance of a topic. Right off the bat when I was explaining my citation saying According to the U.S Census Bureau “there are alone 5.7% Asian’s in the United States,” I was pointing my hands to make sure everyone was paying attention to the numbers. Another thing I did well during the speech was, that I kept eye contact with everyone during the speech

Despite the fact, it is fundamentally the speaker’s skills in the construction of the speech that determine its decisive success.

This class aims to address public speaking and I definitely feel more confident when speaking in front of audiences, especially since I now know the #1 rule of public speaking - KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. I learned about topics in writing and speaking that I did not even know existed even though i saw and heard them everyday. Rhetorical Devices such as Anaphora and Chiasmus are perfect examples of this. Incorporating story into speaking and writing is something that is crucial and I really realized this throughout the semester. This helped me improve my speaking and writing abilities. Even though I despised waking up early for this class, I definitely feel like I gained vast knowledge on speaking and writing. I learned the importance of giving readers a roadmap for them to follow. I noticed a big difference which was also reflected in my grade from my informative speech to my persuasive speech. I was definitely more clear and confident by my second speech. I learned how to make eye contact with my audience while speaking. This class helped me gain valuable insight into my topic - Poverty In India. I found that there was so much more to my topic than just plain facts. In terms of the learning outcomes for this class, I feel i managed to achieve the vast majority of
I think what I need to improve on is when in fear, try to calm myself down or else I will forget everything I have practice. When speaking, I should work on my articulation and tone. My tone of voice did not have a lot of emotion into it. I seem to have been a little monotone with the way I presented the speech. I had a little rise and fall, but I should work on raising my voice for important points and bring back down to facts and evidence that back up my points.
In the first semester of my sophomore year, I have improved in my presenting skills. A project that had helped me improve my presenting skills was the computer science project my partner and I had to built a computer system with a budget, we built a movie theater system. Before the project, I couldn't project my voice. In freshman year I did a debate for biology and I was very nervous.
I have given quite a few speeches in the last few years, even at such a young age. Though I was proficient when I started this class, I have improved even more in these last six weeks. My strengths definitely fall in my organization and content. However in my delivery I often lack in vocal variety and volume, mostly due to nerves, and I often rushing my conclusions. Due to the rank I have in organizations like the National Honor Society, I will often have to speak in public or address my peers so I plan on continuing to practice for my speeches out loud and hopefully I will improve.
After completing the speech, I thought I did good in some area and can improve other. While giving this speech I was able to focus on my topic and utilize given time. I thought I won’t be able to stand in front of the class and speak for that long, but I went over the time limit. I’m sure I was able to explain the subject matter and entertain audiences. I also believe I speak with a voice that is able to reach all audiences.
Well, the speech was really fun to prepare for it, even though the grade is not what I expected. It pretty awesome too when giving the speech because I can see the audiences inner desire. And their laugh and some smile, it shows it all. I got their attention when I first open up the slide because that was the moment when our generation mostly looking for. And that was love, but that not what they expected. I was laughing inside because of that. While giving the speech, I notice I made too many mistakes and know what my weakness, strength is. I can see my strength in organizing my speech with the step of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence because of that my speech went a lot smoother. In addition to that, I was able to get my points across the audience. The thesis of my topic was easily understood by the audience because my earlier slide about finding love caught their attention. That was brilliant, but I can see that my transition is not smooth on every slide. And that is my weakness I have to work on. It's still not as bad as my communication because I know that I’m quadruple-lingual. That make it really hard for me to speaking
All speeches are different and create and new and unique experiences. This informative created a different experience because this time I wasn’t talking about myself and my life. I was talking about something I had to research to know about it wasn’t something that I just knew off the top of my head like I did with my shield speech. The overall experience of giving this speech was completely different. I wasn’t nearly as confident in this speech, but I think it went fairly well. Everybody seemed to really enjoy my speech though. They seemed to find it interesting. The next speech I give I am going to try and make sure that I get a chance to practice more before I go so that I am more confident in my speech. Also so I have more of it memorized and don't have to use my notecards as much and so that I can just go through it and not go over on my time. Sometimes in the real world you'll have to share information in a speech manner. Like if you have to give a presentation at your job some day or in front of a committee of some
Growing up as a somewhat shy and quiet person, I had never been quite fond of speaking in front of other classmates. Not only that, but I felt extra pressure when presenting because I knew that the room was filled with an abundance of highly intelligent peers. Looking back when presenting, I constantly would read off of a powerpoint and never face the audience. Nevertheless, with the help of Mrs. O’Grady, I have realized the importance of eye contact and posture when presenting in front of others. Moreover, I’ve mastered how to speak loud and clearly to a audience and make sure not to speak too fast or too slow, but at a right pace. As a thinker, I know allow myself to have a creative mind when learning about new topics. Additionally, I always keep an open mind to different topics and perspectives, and am no longer one-sided on certain situations. The best way to prepare for a presentation, one must consider the best method, the type of presentation and the audience for a given topic. There are four different types of presentation methods they are; Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speaking, Using a Manuscript, and Memorization. Each of the four methods is appropriate in certain situations. Impromptu is a speech that frequently involves no preparation time and forces you to think on your feet. With no opportunity to prepare, you must rely on what you know. Extemporaneous is a speech that involves preparation and practice. This form of delivery has many advantages.
I have learned my strengths and my weaknesses as a leader. I have learned that some of my strengths during public speaking are being confident, relaxed, and being able to articulate my points very well. I learned that my weakness was not including as much detail as I could have. During the rest of this course and in the future I plan to make a conscious effort to make sure that I not only provide details, but that I make sure that I provide enough details for other people to understand all that I am saying or doing when I am being a leader. Now that I am fully aware of my strengths and weaknesses I can practice them and grow throughout the duration of the course
