There were many problems in society that no one knew of until Eleanor Roosevelt brought them to light. “It’s easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone.” Mahatma Gandhi said. Eleanor decided to do what was right and help people instead of going along with what other people thought. Her rough childhood pushed her to help people that were oppressed. Eleanor especially knew what it was like to be ignored.

For example, acording to Harriet-Tubman.org “In ten years conducting the Underground Railroad she had made 19 trips and guided her parents, siblings, relatives and friends for a total of around 300 slaves. Some were guided by her and others followed her instructions.” She had made 19 daring round trips, from and to slave territory, and like Suu Kyi, had risked her own life for what she thought had been the right course of action. However, unlike Tubman, Aung San Suu Kyi had used a more political approach to make her cause a reality. While Tubman had fought for her cause by helping slaves to freedom herself, Suu Kyi had mainly used speeches to get her point across.
Aung San Suu demonstrates ethos in her speech by contrasting her father with the pacifism of Gandhi by stating: “The words used by Jawaharlal Nehru to describe Mahatma Gandhi could be applied to Aung San.” (page684). She uses that allusion to show her admiration for Gandhi, whom she identifies as “Abhaya”, the absence of fear from the mind. Aung San Suu strongly supports his immense contribution to human rights, peace, and non-violent resistance to fight oppression. She uses Gandhi as an example to persuade the reader that, just like him, she is worthy of trust and respect. She wants to show them that she has the same beliefs, same ideology as Gandhi, whom with his moral and methods brought down imperialism, colonialism and dictatorships. Kyi even continues to say that “there is an inevitable sameness” when she compares Gandhi to her father. A lot of attention focused on her because she is the daughter of once an influential man, so she knows that if she talks about him they would have no problem as to follow her.
One contribution would be when she volunteered at the American Red Cross during World War one when many soldiers were injured and in need of assistance. Eleanor has demonstrated that she is a humanitarian in the way that she became a volunteer at a reform organization where she investigated sweatshops and witnessed the dangers of horrendous working conditions. Eleanor also helped feed those who were poor and had nothing to eat during the Great Depression. She was involved in the National Consumers League which exposed child labor and helped bring awareness to people everywhere. One of the most important factors in implementing change is to bring awareness and Eleanor made sure to do this. Eleanor also became the chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and was an important factor in creating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is one of her legacies. This document consisted of all of the rights that humans were inherently entitled, was adopted and has influenced many other national constitutions. She joined the United Nations which is a world peace keeping organization. This enabled her to help people in other countries get the rights to vote, to speak publicly, and the right to get a job. Eleanor was also involved with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and attempted to end lynching and gain more rights for African Americans.
She was stood for all those that was too scared to speak out, she was their voice, a true hero. She inspire the Montgomery Bus Boycott that helped end segregation nationwide. Her refusal to let people treat her that way inspired many to fight for their rights. Mahatma Gandhi was not as relevant in this fight as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks was, however, he has a similar stance on freedom. He was the leader of the Indian Independence movement and believed in nonviolent resistance.
Eleanor herself may have been one of the most effective encouragements for women of her time. In her lifetime she owned her own company, taught English literature, drama and American history, wrote for several magazines, spoke at political rallies and conventions, and eventually became a delegate to the United Nations. While her tireless work was invaluable, the manner in which she lived her life and the effect she had on all those around her, would light the way for generations of women to come.
The leaders include the president of Burma, Thein Sein, and a famous politician of the country, Aung San Suu Kyi. The two groups comprise of the Sangha, which is a community of Buddhist monks, and the Rakhine Nationalities Development Group (RNDG), which is a political party in Myanmar. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize for forming the National League for Democracy and coincidently disapproved of violence and hoped that all ethnic groups could “cooperate in harmony.” Since then, she has denied any evidence of an ethnic cleansing, when asked about it in an interview and she has talked about the Rohingya Muslims, stating that “They are not our citizens.” The president, Thein Sein, has done many things to contribute to the ethnic cleansing. He has come up with ideas to end the ethnic cleansing, such as “expelling” the muslims from the country or getting the United Nations to “resettle” them somewhere else.
Princess Diana was an inspiration for many people around the world and used her royalty to highlight major social issues. Diana’s dedication to humanitarian work helped to promote awareness and raise money for a wide range of charitable causes, including her campaign against landmines and her kind hearted approach to the AIDS predicament. Diana crossed boundaries to offer support to casualties and worked hard to change the opinions of the general public, which didn't particularly follow royal protocol because she lead from the heart, not the head.
