How Fear of Failure and Aggression Effect Sportsmanship Sportsmanship, or lack thereof, is a real problem in youth sports today. Many kids quit playing due to a poor experience with sports. Many coaches will use tough love, and constant shouting to motivate kids, hopefully instilling that winning is not just important, but it is the only thing. For athletes such as myself, this is my mind set, winning is the only thing in my mind when it comes to sports. Athletes such as my younger brother have a real problem with being shouted at, and being put down by other athletes; due to lack of sportsmanship. This can be related to a fear, of a fear of failure FF for short. The lack of sportsmanship is a real problem in youth sports. Due to athletes and coaches taking out aggression because of the winning is the only thing mentality, and the real problem of fear of failure. The lack of sportsmanship is leading to childhood obesity and real fear to fail in life. Is there a way to play a tough clean game, but not affect the children with a fear of failure in a negative way? In the article “The Playing Tough and Clean Hockey Program,” it goes into detail how the game of hockey is a very aggressive sport due to the fact that the players are all in a confined space and acts of aggression can take place. Because of this, it makes it difficult for players to control their emotions and maintain positive sportsmanship. It is impossible to completely eliminate the aggressive behavior;
In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky argues that younger children should not be involved in overly competitive sports. Statsky wrote that organized competitive sports were to the disadvantage of children both physically and psychologically. In youth athletics, some parents and coaches put their own dreams in front of their children 's’ well-being by stressing winning. Statsky concludes “all organized sports activities” to be remade as a more enjoyable game regardless of each athlete’s ability and athleticism. The author states many issues that kids have when they are forced to play a sport just to win or that they don’t enjoy. Some kids just don 't enjoy sports, but their parents force it on them. Certain organized sports programs promote winning over physical skills and self-esteem. Statsky brings up valid points that early childhood shouldn’t involve intense physical competition, which is associated with the risk of injury to the body and mind.
Competitive sports in some cases are becoming very unhealthy for children. Most children would rather play on a losing team than sit on the bench of a winning team. Youth sports are a great idea to get children up and active, as well as improve their social skills. Just like every other thing in life it is important to practice and work hard to achieve success. However it is unhealthy to push for results over the needs or wants of the child. “The bad behaviour is so common in hockey that it even has its own name – rink rage.” Rink Rage has come to an all time high in the past couple years from both fans and coaches. Their bad behaviour in games has became so drastic that laws have been put in place to stop this behaviour. James Deacon, in his essay “Rink Rage”, discusses this issue in the minor hockey league. Deacon speaks about incidents that bad behaviour has resulted in, numerous amounts of injuries and casualties have been reported. Not only should this not be happening; but especially not in a minor hockey league, kids are their to have fun and get exercise. The impact of preserving sports in high schools has been surrounded by much controversy as people suspect that it is the reason behind the poor academic achievement of students. Opponents to high school sports feel that allowing athletics to be a part of schools sidetracks the focus of the student body, which goes completely against the main purpose of schools. Indeed, this assertion is completely true and based upon plentiful evidence. High school sports undoubtedly come at the expense of student academic achievement since they divert the attention of students away from academics and they come with far too many financial costs, both of which incur negative impacts on the academics within a school. The bottomline is that sports are harming the education of students, so a school must make the decision between composing quality sports teams or providing high level academics; both of these choices simply cannot occur simultaneously.

The game of hockey is over 100 years old and fighting is one element that has kept players engaged and fans hooked throughout the years. The first indoor hockey game was played in 1875 and the NHL was formed 42 years later in 1917. In 1922, fighting was added to the rule book as a regulated aspect of the game. There is no sporting event that brings an explosion quite like that of an ice hockey fight. Ice hockey has always been stereotyped as brutal and unnecessarily violent, a game full of players who are nothing but “goons”. However, when we talk about youth sports, our main concern is with providing players with a positive, character building experience. Winning is not the only acceptable outcome for youth players, and coaches need to understand this principle. “With a winning philosophy young athletes may lose out on opportunities to develop their skills, to enjoy participation, and to grow socially and emotionally. In as much as sports are good for physical, mental and emotional growth, it should be organized in a manner that the youths will enjoy the game at the end of it rather than the fear of being hurt or defeated by the other competitors.
