Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have
Common type of sprains would be in the ankle and in the wrist. The ankle is one of the most common injuries in professional and recreational sports and activities. Most ankle sprains happen when the foot abruptly turns inward or outward as an athlete runs, turns, falls, or lands after a jump. One or more of the lateral ligaments can be injured if this occurs. Wrists are often sprained after a fall in which the athlete lands on an outstretched hand.
Who has watched the Olympics game or a professional basketball game and not wondered, “Why are so many of the best black athletes?” or “are they better suited to athletics than Whites or Asians genetically? It is well known that black athletes participate more in basketball and football. Comparing with black and white, Asian athletes are less participate in basketball or football. There are racial differences in participation in football, basketball, and other sports. Black males are 2.5 times as likely to participate in basketball. On the other hand, white males are 1.3 times more likely than black males to participate in other sports such as baseball, soccer, and swimming. (Jennifer E) Besides, most of people will curious about why black athletes participate more in basketball or football, and why more Asian-American participate more in table tennis and why Latino are more willing to participate more in baseball. The three factors can

Winning is the Only Thing: Sports in America Since 1945 by Randy Roberts and James S. Olson discusses the history of sports beginning with World War II, through the Cold War to present day. For the most part, this book discusses the effects that World War II had on the way sports were played and how the public viewed sports, however the underlying message was another. The book focuses on how people evolved with the changes that sports encountered. People’s perspectives changed from one of trying to make a living to trying to make the most money. As people changed sports changed, which in turn changed people again.
Whenever an athlete participates in a sport, whether it be practice or a meet/game, they run the risk of injuring themselves. When it comes to basketball, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are common. ACL tears are more likely to occur in female basketball players as opposed to males. In basketball, speed, strength, and power are the most important physical qualities to develop. Sometimes an athlete may be lacking in certain areas which puts them at a greater risk for tearing their ACL.
Females and males are different in many aspects in sports. The way they play, the way they approach a game, but most of all, females and males differ in their skeleton structure, making them more susceptible to ACL injuries.
The ACL is one of the most common injuries today, but in the past it was rare to have this type of injury. Warren states, “Whereas in the 1970’s HSS performed about five ACL procedures a year, today that number is closer to 100,000 a year.” Today it is very common for teenage boys and girls to play the same sports. According to Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California college, “ACL injury is most prevalent (1 in 1,750 persons) in patients 15-45 years of age.” The average person is more active in the age range of 15 through 45 so this is why the ACL injuries are more likely to happen within this age gap. Department of Orthopedic Surgery, also explains, “ACL injury has an annual incidence of more than 200,000 cases with
The term ACL refers to Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The ACL is one of two ligaments in the middle of the knee that connects the femur to the tibia. The tearing of your ACL is a pretty common injury. There are about 100,000 ACL tears in the United States each year at a financial cost of around $1.7 billion. This wound is usually caused by pivoting, cutting, and jumping while playing sports. The number of people who have torn their ACL is actually increasing. Doctors believe this is happening either because more people are participating in high intensity
INCREASE IN TEARS Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are receiving a great deal of notice because of the incidence of injury that occurs not only in the athletic population but also in those individuals who are recreationally active (Russell, 2006). Each year in the United States there are approximately 250,000 ACL injuries. This is approximately 1 in 3,000 in the general population (Boden, 2000). Of these injuries, about 175,000 require reconstructive surgery. These surgeries had an estimated cost of over two billion dollars annually in the United States (Yu, 2007). These statistics alone make it obvious that this injury occurs very often. The ACL is one of the most commonly disrupted ligaments in the knee. While the prevalence of the injury has increased, so has the number of athletes in the world since ACL injury research first began. Women are now allowed to participate in sports and new sports are being participated in
In her article, “High School ACL Injury Rates”, Dawn Comstock shows that in 2009, about sixty percent, of all sports surgeries involve the knee; within the sixty percent, about fifty percent of the knee surgeries are ACL reconstructions. Sports that could have a higher tendency for an athlete to tear the ACL are sports that require an athlete to decelerate quickly or need to cut and change direction instantly. For example, an article shows that a high-impact sport has a higher percentage of ACL tears when compared to a low-impact sport, such as football and women’s soccer; football has a forty-one percent ACL injury rate while women’s soccer only has nineteen percent. Not only does the level of impact effect the likelihood of ACL injury, but the gender of the athlete as well. When looking at women’s and men’s soccer, men have a merely thirteen percent ACL injury rate because their physical structure along with their techniques when doing certain exercises.
There are many important parts in your body, and the anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) is one of the most important part to your leg and fitness. The ACL gives the knee its stability and many injuries can happen to this part of the body, so people with these injuries often visit rehabilitation(rehab) therapy for faster recovery. This is one of the most common athletic injuries. Mostly teens, who play sports, get these injuries. A pop usually indicates that the ACL is torn. Many people come to rehab therapy, and even with this special treatment, it takes a very long time for full restoration. The torn ACL not only affects certain parts of your body, but also affects several parts that can cause more severe injuries.
In the sports world the word ACL brings absolute horror and cringe with it. That’s because when an ACL tears it can be one of the most painful experiences an athlete can have, especially with the surgeries and recovery it brings with it. Along with that, the ACL is in the deep part of the middle of the knee, so most of the time when you damage your ACL you most likely have damaged something else. Women especially have to worry about the overall health of their knees as they have a 4.8% greater chance of tearing their ACL than men (Musgrave). ACL tears are one of the worst injuries in the sports world and in order to recover to full health it takes time, patience, and a hard-work ethic.
Soccer is one of the most common sports that causes injuries without making contact with another player. According to the Federation Internationale de Futbol Association (FIFA), Soccer is the World’s most popular organized sport with over 200 million males and 21 million females registered in the FIFA (Giza). Soccer has become more popular in females in the last decade and is a great recreational sport to be apart of. In Montana, girls that play soccer are prepared for all weather mentally but not necessarily physically. Many girls every year are sat on the bench from injuries. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common injury a young girl can get. Soccer is a game played on a turf or grass field. The ground could change within minutes if it started raining or snowing. This causes it to become slippery making it more of a change for an athlete to injure themselves. When a soccer player kicks the soccer ball they put all body weight on one leg to swing their other leg to kick the ball. The continuous stopping, going and turing is a factor that causes most ACL injuries. Soccer is just one of many sports that injuries can occur in and is more likely to happen without contact with another person on the field.
