What is a sports physical therapist? A sports physical therapist is a physical therapist who specializes in the field of sports medicine. This type of therapist is qualified to work with patients who have suffered debilitating injuries from sporting events (Thyberg). Sports physical therapists work with a number of patients with problems ranging from muscle pains to sports injuries. Their work doesn’t consist of only working with injured patients; sports physical therapists must come up with care plans, fill out paper work, and check in with their patient’s doctors for status updates. Either way, physical therapy bound students are well off. Most physical therapy departments, offering a master’s degree, require students to take certain mathematics courses along with physics, biology, chemistry, and anatomy. Those who are in this four-year program often take human physiology and anatomy, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, and anatomical kinesiology. These classes are taken over the course of one’s first four years of college. To obtain a master’s degree and eventually a license in physical therapy, the student must endure a couple additional years of schooling (Education-Portal.com).
The master’s degree program in physical therapy takes about two years to complete. This program includes both general science courses and clinical experience, which is overseen by a licensed P.T. After they have finished the master’s degree program, students must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination in order to graduate. Before they are able to practice, the future physical therapists must also pass the required state exams as well. Although it may seem as if their training is finished, physical therapists must take several continuing education courses to keep their credentials up to date (Education-Portal.com).
