St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. He is the patron saint for ecologists. St. Francis was also the first person to receive the stigmata of Christ, the marks resembling the wounds of Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified. After living a life devoted to God, Francis was canonized as a Saint just two years after his death on July 16, 1228, by his former protector, Pope Gregory IX.
St. Francis ' father was Pietro Bernardone, a wealthy Assisian cloth merchant. His mother, Pica, little is known, but she is said to have belonged to a noble family of Provence. Francis was born in Assisi, a town in Italy in 1181 or 1182 — the exact year is uncertain. Giovanni was the name given to Francis on his baptism but was later altered to Francesco, through fondness it would seem for France. In any case, since the child was renamed in infancy, the change can hardly have had anything to do with his aptitude for learning French, as some have thought.
St. Francis of Assisi was renowned for drinking and partying in his youth. He began his life as a confirmed sinner. He was spoiled, indulging himself with fine food, wine, and wild celebrations.
