St Patrick's Day Tradition

Even though there are many similarities between the Scottish and Irish cultures, there are also many differences. For one, the Scottish have trouble defining what Scottish culture is, this is because they joined the UK at a very early time. Because of this, much of Scottish culture has joined together with English culture. This could be seen when we were walking around Glasgow and saw many English Art and sculptures, as well as walking around the Holyrood house in Edenborough. And now that Scotland may break away from England, the people cling to fantasy and mystery, as well as their own accomplishments to create and define Scottish culture.

The Irish people left Ireland and immigrated to America to enjoy a better life, get away from the poverty and starvation that they were faced with in Ireland due to the potato famine. They face all kinds of discrimination and were forced to take the worst types of jobs, but they never gave up and kept fighting for their freedom. The Irish were brave, courageous, and hardworking and made it possible for all Irish to live happy and free lives in America.

In the first place, my maternal grandfather instilled a pride and understanding of my Irish roots. Specifically, he brought me over to Belfast to learn and experience the culture. At the time, the hostility between the Protestants and Catholics was evident. Additionally, I saw people living under the threats of terrorism and bombing, propaganda graffiti, and a city under a police state. The city life gave the Irish a chance to continue to stay close to their families and communities, a chance to help one another out. This strong sense of belonging is evident in all Irish communities; the upper class would only try to help "their own" by giving them jobs or housing. The Irish did not only look to the streets for sanctuary, but also looked to a higher power. The most important community was that of the local church. For many, social events at the churches, such as dances and mixers, were a way for the Irish to unwind and relax. The churches and communities helped the families of the Irish grow and provided a backbone for the next hundred years.

In my culture traditions are very important in your life. For example, one tradition that has been in my family for many years is going to the park and celebrating Easter with the family. We barbecue, play sports, and then at the end of the day we have an Easter egg hunt for the young children. Another tradition of ours is to do a Christmas Eve dinner at my great grandma’s house. During this event you are with your relatives and close friends for dinner and for a social gathering until the early morning of Christmas day. Many of our traditions revolve around getting all of our family together and spending time with them.

My family, like many, is Irish. Our ancestors hail from Ireland, and in Ireland they have many traditions. Traditions that some of us may never have known existed, or maybe you know what it is, but you don’t celebrate. A holiday that many people celebrate each year is St. Patrick’s Day. You’ve heard of it, right? Exactly my point. What about the Laden Table, another Irish tradition.

St. Patrick was born around the year 387 A.D. in present day Britain, since at the time the area Britain was controlled by the Romans that area could be considered Roman Britain. His real name, according to Bibliography, was Maewyn Succat, the name Patrick was the name he took after he was ordained. Patrick’s parents were named Conchessa and Calphurnius Succat. Patrick came from a faithful family. His father was a deacon, and his grandfather, Pontius, was a member of the clergy. His mother also happened to be a close relative of the great patron St. Martin of Tours. What’s extremely surprising is that Patrick wasn’t raised with much of an emphasis on religion, and neither was education. His lack of education would later became an embarrassment for him. Patrick was also from a rich family. Durring his teenage years he was kidnapped by Irish raiders, but most people just think of them as pirates. During his imprisonment he became more and more religious, he even began to believe his kidnapping was a punishment for his lack for faith. In his autobiography the Confessio, he wrote he was imprisoned for six years, in the northern part of Ireland working as a shepherd.

There are other reasons I should be interested in this course besides the opportunity to be in Ireland during St. Patrick’s Day? Kidding aside, I’m interested in this course for personal and educational reasons. Personally, I’m part Irish, but I don’t much about the culture or customs and this would be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about my family history. Besides learning more about my heritage what I look forward to the most is the opportunity to interact and learn from professionals, I want to be educated not just about the culture but the country and its people and I would be learning from the very best; journalists, diplomats, activists, and not just them, but from my fellow students as well. Since my family lived so close together, we had many family traditions that remain important. We gather for nearly every holiday for a meal and routine. For a short time in Ireland many were faced with a hard decision due to the struggling with starvation in a time of famine. With this hardship many made the difficult choice to leave their country and seek refuge in the United States. The individual that I interview had family that lived in County Cork, Ireland and they decided to make the journey to the United States in hopes of a better life. Her Grandparents came to the United States through New York and changed their last name by dropping the prefix to make it more American. They moved to Cleveland and her grandfather was able to find work at chief Boyardee to support his family. Many traditions have been passed down from generation to generation. Celebration St. Patrick’s day was always an important day for this family. This was a time to eat traditional Irish food, music, and Irish folk dancing.
