Many classic movies like Stand By Me, often started out as books. Originally written as a novella, The Body by Stephen King was later turned into a movie. Being directed by Rob Reiner and produced by Bruce A. Evans, Reynold Gideon, and Andrew Scheinman, Stand By Me turned out to be a movie very similar to the book it was based on. Both the movie and the novella tell the story of four boys, Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio, who set out on a journey to find the body of a missing child. While they are both alike, there are also differences in the characters, dialogue, and plot.

One aspect of the movie was the characters and their relationships and personalities. There was an important relationship in Stand By Me between Gordie and his brother Denny, who was in a fatal jeep accident. Gordie said to Chris "I miss him, Chris. I really miss him," and even had a nightmare about Denny's funeral. He also had a flashback of Denny giving him a hat that was later stolen from him, he was upset about it as if it held a sentimental value. These all show that Gordie cared about Denny a great deal. There is an emotional scene where Chris tells Gordie he stole the milk money at school, but he gave it back. He got in trouble anyway because the teacher kept the money. He was upset because even if he tried to tell someone what happened, they wouldn't believe him because he's from a bad family. In the book, this took place while they were walking, but in the movie it happened in the middle of the night. Another scene that was changed was the scene where the boys found the body.
