The movie, “Stand by Me,” exhibits the many things a child goes through during the adolescence. The theories of Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Erik Erikson are clearly exemplified in Gordy, Chris, Teddy, and Vern throughout the movie. Teenagers today face a number of problems, ranging from peer pressure and alcohol, to depression and rape. These severe topics can have an intense effect on a growing child, now, and in the future. Many modern teenagers face the daily struggles of harmful situations, and the good and bad in them. In The Perks of Being a Wall Flower, Charlie faces almost every bad situation imaginable, in a heart breaking and realistic coming of age story. Charlie does not have the grandest high school experience, but the book represents the harsh and cruel reality of what so many students face today. Charlie, also being on the unclear side of what he was experiencing, was also hit hard with the outcomes of his actions. Drugs, alcohol, and sexual interaction contributed to the difficult standards that are held to growing students, in their fight to fit in. Every teen has faced the harsh reality of peer pressure and abuse, which takes a harsh effect on its victims. In the beginning of the story, Charlie faces the death of one of his friend Michael, to suicide. Starting the beginning of Charlie?s coming of age story, also known as a freshman in high school. Throughout the book, peer pressure, substance abuse, the fight to be normal, and the hope to have friends in the first place pushed Charlie to take the wrong path in some situations. ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ follows shy and kind-natured Charlie Kelmeckis (Logan Lerman- Percy Jackson, The Butterfly Effect) as he enters high school alone, after the recent loss of his middle school best friend to suicide. Charlie gets befriended by seniors Sam (Emma Watson- Harry Potter-Beauty and the Beast) and Patrick (Ezra Miller- Justice League, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and finally feels accepted.

Stand By Me, a 1986 film directed by Rob Reiner, and Looking for Alibrandi, a 1992 novel by Melina Marchetta, are two texts designed to inspire teenagers and young adults through entertaining and relatable life happenings of their main protagonists. The two texts share a similarity in that both protagonists deal with challenges, uncertainties and insecurities. However, these topics vary in such ways that the stories contrast greatly and potentially appeal to different audiences.

Though Charlie is an unreliable narrator in both film and novel form, he offers a sense of complete realism. From not quite dysfunctional families to first parties, Perks of Being a Wallflower immortalizes realistic moments in time like listening to a song for the first time in a car with friends. In one of the most memorable scenes from both the novel and the film, Charlie is in the car with Patrick and Sam and they’re driving through the tunnel after a dance. Charlie is there, completely in the moment with them and he says “…in that moment I swear, we were infinite,” (p 80). True reality is seemingly just out of grasp for Charlie until he meets Patrick and Sam. They tether him to reality and, alongside the rest of the “island of misfit toys” (movie quote), enable him to be and feel present in the moment. The narrative of the movie reflects that subtle change as when Charlie begins making friends with the step-siblings, the voice-overs, or Charlie’s inner monologue

Throughout the duration of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the disease that plagues many high school aged students, affects Charlie in ways that many people would never imagine. The depression that Charlie is suffering from also characterizes him while helping him grow. The growth does not start out as positive or healthy in any way but by the end of the book, the crash that Charlie had experienced, helped him come back stronger than before. After receiving help from trusted adults and medical staff, Charlie is ready to jump back into his life and participate in high school and relationships

“Stand By Me” plummets us into a world of four naïve and rebellious children on the brink of adolescence as they expand their world, discover themselves and find where their friendships and loyalties lie. The gang consists of Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Pheonix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell) and with some outstanding acting, we find ourselves in the shoes of Gordie as he recounts his past. After recently finding out about the untimely demise of his best friend Chris, we are taken back in time to when he was “twelve going into thirteen when I first saw my first dead human being” as the narrative voice puts it. How do we develop long lasting friendships ? Would we have our own lives taken in the place of a friend’s ? Go on crazy adventures that could get us killed ? Well in the movie Stand By Me the answer to all these questions has to be a maybe. When I think about the friendships i’ve been in for the past 16 years I can relate to the novella / movie quite a bit. Knowing the person who influenced me to become the woman i am today, our adventures and crazy times played a big part. Now, we didn’t ever do anything like search for a dead boys body to prove ourselves . Our rights of passage were more like, the first walk to seven eleven by ourselves or the first time on city transit together.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel about coming of age that is seen through the perspective of Charlie, a young ‘wallflower’ that is starting high school and experiences the troublesome teenage life filled with drugs, sexuality and love. Charlie writes this book in a series of letters to an anonymous person. Charlie is the main protagonist of the story who is apprehensive and a kind-hearted boy however he has many problems happening in his life that he doesn’t like to concern others with “I just don’t want you to worry about me, or think you’ve met me, or waste your time anymore”. I admire Charlie because he is very considerate of others and although he is shy he overcomes this fear when he tries to find friends and step out of his comfort zone” Normally I am very shy, but (Patrick) seemed like the kind of guy you could just walk up to at a football game even though you were three years younger and not popular”. In return Charlie is rewarded with his first real friend at high school. I also admire Charlie for his mature attitude towards finding new friends and moving on from the death of his friend Michael. Charlie really needed to start interacting more with people, during the story we find out that Charlie misses having a friend and that being alone can be difficult and cause negative effects “It would be very nice to have a friend again. I would like that even more than a date”. I think

Friendships have such a big effect on each other's personalities and beliefs because they allow us to experience joys and hardships other than our own. This not only gives us perspective but the ability to intimately share our world and our pain. Sam and Charlie's friendship is one of the most salient within the book. Sam and Charlie teach each other a series of things throughout the book. But most importantly, Sam shows Charlie how to do something he'd wanted to do through the entire book; participate.

Everybody experienced high school in a different way, whether it be the best time of one’s life or the worst. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky explores the life of an odd freshman named Charlie, and his thoughts while beginning this new chapter of his life. His high school experience was inconsistent, with emotions running amuck. He certainly would not consider these years to be the best time of his life. The story is told by letters sent from Charlie, a sensitive fifteen year old.

Charlie lacks a sort of self-centredness that allows him to be especially kind to everyone. Although he strives to do what’s best, he is constantly sacrificing his own well-being for the comfort of others. An example of this is when he enters into a relationship with Mary-Elizabeth. Despite not being attracted to her, Charlie fears hurting her and therefore refuses to break up with her despite it causing him to struggle emotionally. Sam, Charlie’s friend is also an excellent example of striving to be a good human being as she looks past Charlie’s dark history and doesn’t judge him for it.

Charlie, the main character in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, tells his story through a series of letters written over a span of one year, or Charlie’s freshman year of high school. Author Stephen Chbosky, tells the story of a young man trying to find his way and also trying to make friends in school. Along the way, Charlie has trials he must go through, and not everything results in a happy ending right away. Eventually, all is well in Charlie’s life, but he must struggle in order to finally be content and happy with his life. Charlie’s coming of age story is told through his trials of trying to fit in by going to parties, drinking and even doing drugs while many of his relationships are hurt in the process. Just as every other high school student, Charlie wants to feel like he belongs, even if that means becoming someone that he is not. Along the way, not only is Charlie hurt, but also his friends Sam and Patrick. The relationships with these two friends, and Charlie himself are tested by all of their actions and how they live their lives.
