Standardized testing used by schools statewide has been a topic of high controversy for years amongst students, parents and educators. Standardized testing was introduced as an attempt to level the learning curve and create equality in education. Parents and students alike are informed of the rigorous testing process and the consequences associated with poor scores but I do not think that everyone has enough facts to support or oppose standardized testing as a way to evaluate students grades K-12. “Standardized testing involves using testing instruments that are administered and scored in a pre-established standard or consistent manner.” (Flanagan , Mascolo and Hardy-Braz) This means that test results can be compared equally among peers on …show more content…

Modifications such as sitting secluded, time extensions or not being required to fill in the bubble sheet are common modifications but these students are all still taking the same exam as their peers in the same grade level. “A standardized test is one that is given to evaluate the performance of students relative to all other students with the same characteristics, for example, all fourth-grade students or all students taking AP English in high school.” (Issitt, Micah L., and Maureen McMahon). Standardized testing is a large burden upon students as well as teachers which outweighs any good that can come from the scores of the tests. If our politicians really care about the education of our future American leaders they need to explore some of the alternatives to standardized testing. Some of the alternative that I have research are performance-based assessments and the use of rubrics for scoring practices. Almost anything could work as well as or more efficiently than our current standardized testing process. Standardized testing is not beneficial to student and should be eliminated due to the following reasons: only evaluates proficiency that one day, places enormous pressure on the student and the teacher, it is impossible to measure proficiency statewide with one set of standards and teachers only teach the test and the tests have often been viewed as discrimatory of african
