Standardized testing has been ruling over the lives of students, making or breaking them in their education without fair judgement. Tests like the SAT and the ACT count for way too much when applying to colleges, which in turn limits the student 's capabilities to thrive in an environment that would benefit them. There are many problems within a standardized test that deems them to be unreliable as a true test of knowledge. Although designed to test groups of students on intelligence, standardized testing neglects to fairly acknowledge the abilities of each unique student which reflect their true capabilities.

Additionally, Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” There are different forms of intelligence that go beyond what our school system measures. Students are not a unit to be measured, and students cannot be assigned a numerical value to identify their intelligence. Students are diverse—they learn at different speeds, and they learn in different ways. Focusing solely on test scores is hurting our students and deviating away from building our society on success and excellence. Critics are slowly realizing the problems associated with standardized tests—they create anxiety, they are extremely biased, and they do not measure the ability to think deeply.

According to Diane Ravitch, “Sometimes, the most brilliant and intelligent minds do not shine in standardized tests because they do not have standardized minds.” Her point is that not every student’s mind operates the same way, so one test that all students must take does not measure the student’s actual abilities. Across the United States, standardized testing is a popular method used to measure a student’s academic ability and their college admission. These exams have multiple-choice questions and sometimes a writing section, which the examiners must complete in a certain amount of time. Standardized testing does have its place in school. Often times it is misused and overused. “Measuring what and how well students learn is an essential building block in the process of strengthening and improving our nation's schools.

Our group is interested in discovering if benefits exist from the two educational policies, “Every Student Succeeds Act” and the recent “No Child Left Behind Act”. Specifically, we want to know if standardized testing is the best way possible to determine if the federal government is providing high quality education to our nation. We know that standardized testing is a major component of both these policies, and we want to understand how standardized testing works within these policies. Furthermore, we want to discover if an alternate method to determine educational success exists within these certain educational policies.

Standardized testing is used to tell students level in certain areas of academics; however, it is actually a waste of time and money.

Research shows that standardized tests are generally good at measuring students’ knowledge, skills, and understanding because they are objective, fair, efficient, and comprehensive (Walberg). According to Walberg, students benefit directly when they take tests that offer information on how well they have mastered an objective. Educators can better assist students when they know how a student’s objective performance is compared with others. Any child that is in any type of schooling knows what standardized testing is. It is required in every state of America, and not a single child likes it. In recent years a controversial issue has been weather or not standardized testing should be used to judge a person’s intelligence. On one hand, many people believe that standardized testing should not be used because they say it is not a good way to judge a person’s real-world intelligence. On the other hand, however, others argue that standardized testing is an excellent way to predict a person’s intelligence.

I think that standardized tests do not completely test a child’s academic abilities. One way that standardized tests are bad is that many students get nervous because of the test and score low even though they are intelligent. Standardized tests are not reasonable because they do not show the true intellect of a student, they cause unneeded stress, and the scores follow the students throughout their education. First of all standardized tests do not show the true intellect of a student. These tests do not represent the non-book smarts of a student or the ting that a student is thinking about.

Personally, I think that this quote is a perfect example of how useless standardized tests are. School systems in the U.S. swear by these tests. The people supporting and making the tests seem to never think about the fact that some kids have test anxiety. Even for kids who are good testers, these can not possibly accurately test their abilities. Not to mention that the idea of evaluation teachers by these tests is absolutely ridiculous.

In my opinion I do not think standardized tests measures a student's learning accurately. I think this because there are students who are bright, smart, and have a high GPA, but when it comes to taking a test some students just break

Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
