When comes to education in America, far to offer our society labels people as un- educated because the inability to pass standardized tests. In reality, we shouldn’t base a person's ability to determine if they're educated because that’s far from the truth. I believe that standardized test isn’t the only way to determine every student’s education knowledge. For example, high scores standardized test doesn’t signify that you are talented thinking or a student. The goal of education is more education, but the majority of people like this don’t get the opportunity like others. Just think they could have been people who made good grades and excelled in school, but didn’t get a full ride scholarship to a certain college. There are people who didn’t go to college, but are successful today. It doesn’t happen, for the majority of us, but we can’t just single out those people who have originated up with creativity, intelligence with ideas or investment with no college background.

By World War I, standardized testing was a common practice in the United States. It started with the Chinese, filling out tests to determine job status among the workers. During the industrial revolution, children left the farms and land to sit behind a desk, which caused the need to test a large amount of children quickly. The most common and well-known in our society are the SAT and ACT, which became a common rite of passage into universities in our society. There are many different views on standardized testing, creating a rift in our society, whether it has positive or negative impacts on our educational community and futures of children in our country.

The use of standardized testing to measure students’ knowledge is an inaccurate reflection of their capabilities. By being forced to take a test that does not effectively show their abilities, students become overstressed, and the tests themselves do not promote true academic achievement. Rather than learning about subjects in order to gain knowledge, students simply memorize facts and formulas to get a decent test score. Standardized tests are not an appropriate measure of student performance, only benefit certain groups of students, and do not prepare students for the real world.

Some would argue that standardized tests test everybody on the same level and it shows how well the students are taught by the teachers. This is true but not everybody learns on the same level and some don’t take tests very well.

The tests show what the student is learning and possibly what the student is still having trouble with (Parent Today). That could be a positive benefit to help the teachers teach the student in a more adequate and skillful way, but there is usually no feedback to the teachers about the students’ test results. The tests are usually not returned or if they are, they are not given the correct answers to any missed questions. That makes it nearly impossible to teach the material that is being misunderstood or is hard to grasp. It also does not help with teaching the process of coming up with a reason or response to a situation and/or question. Many standardized tests are a useful tool when deciding what college to attend, for example, the MCAT is a medical standardized that is required for all admittees into medical school. Around the country, many children are able to conform to teacher-made tests and how to navigate through them, although with standardized tests, they are raw and able to show if a student is really struggling in a specific area. Standardized tests are useful in schools across the country because they help enforce growth and how students are meeting benchmarks, while making it an equal playing field for all students.

Standardized testing scores help us grow as students. That’s why they shouldn’t be taken away because they provide teachers information on what we need to work on and push us to work harder to get a better grade. Standardized tests also help us with college.

You know what? A great amount of students think they should take fewer standardized tests! Standardized tests take up too much time! Yes, these tests DO make it easier to see if students are doing their work, but they also make the students’ teachers confused on what their students need help on.

To start off, standardized tests take up too much class time. Class time helps prepare students for opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges. Without more class time, students will not be prepared for later in life. Plus, the students have almost all day to take the test. So, after they are done with the test then they do not have any class time left.

Standardized testing has many cons but it also has its pros. Standardized Testing can be a guideline for teachers on what to teach their students and what they are learning and if they need help If they are falling behind. Since all students around the state and county take standardized test such as the ACT the SAT or the FCAT it can let parents know where there child stands compared to other students around the state. One major cause standardized testing has to helping teachers is that it allows us to track the students progression. For example it tells us if the student has improved over the years , stayed consistent, or has fallen behind. We can track this because students take test like the FCAT year-round which lets us calculate the progression of the student. Standardized test also lets us compare how boys are doing compared to the girls.(Margie)

My first reason is that students don’t learn from the standardized tests. Students don’t get results back from their test right away. Students don’t really know if their test scores grew or not. When students take the test, they don’t even know if they passed right away. Students not knowing what their test score is, right away can stress the students and teachers out.

Yes i do think schools are placing too much emphasis on standardized testing. Too much unnecessary testing, too much time spent , and too much money spent. These are my 3 reasons why i think schools are placing too much emphasis on standardized testing.
