Standardized Testing: Unreliable Measure Of Students

Standardized testing has been ruling over the lives of students, making or breaking them in their education without fair judgement. Tests like the SAT and the ACT count for way too much when applying to colleges, which in turn limits the student 's capabilities to thrive in an environment that would benefit them. There are many problems within a standardized test that deems them to be unreliable as a true test of knowledge. Although designed to test groups of students on intelligence, standardized testing neglects to fairly acknowledge the abilities of each unique student which reflect their true capabilities.

First, standardized testing helps us to see growth of students. We can see growth as compared to other students and other countries. Students take the test more than once and it’s different every time. Growth can be seen from these tests throughout the year telling teachers what to teach.

These test that is forced on the students don’t show all the capabilities of a student and all that the student has to offer. In the classroom, some students are more engaged than others and when they are assisted on the test this is not shown anywhere as a result of the students capabilities. Some students struggle with what they got on the standardized test simply because they are not adequate test takers. Some however have some critical advantages that “show” that they are capable of taking standardized test and knowing the material. Looking at a student's academic performance prior to testing, can tell a completely different story when standardized testing comes into play. Though turning in assignments and doing homework can look promising on an A-F grading scale, when putting students up next to tests a whole other story is told.

Standardized testing is a down fall to many students but also an opportunity for many others. Standardized testing has its pros and its cons. It can be the make it or break it factor into getting into colleges you are hoping to attend or the scholarships you want to earn. Some people may have their opinions about the test, whether they hate it or not but the fact is that it’s here to stay.

An average students takes over one hundred standardized tests in his or her school years. Standardized tests are used to measure and test the knowledge of students in a particular subject in a quick and easy way. But do these test fully measure the strength of knowledge these students have practiced for their whole lives?
