“He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face” Mr. Hooper earns himself a spot as an outcast in society after his newly worn black veil creates uneasiness among townspeople. Hooper’s new appearance is not up to par to with the standard of a gentleman's’ appearance. Therefore, opinions amongst townspeople take a drastic turn, and become grim and unpleasant. It is evident that the standards in society have a great effect on people. They can make people behave in many different ways. For some, this may turn them to become rebellious. For others, they alter their personalities, or even resort to isolating themselves. That is, society can transform the process of how we think and the decisions we fabricate. Veronica Roth demonstrates the overlying power that societies standards can have on citizens through her well known series, known as Divergent. Veronica Roth creates a setting in which people are divided into five factions The society also encopasses a grouping of people of whom do not fit into any of the five factions. This group of people, also know as Divergents, are seen as a threat to the society, because they are unconventional. The standards set forth by this society causes divergents to become rebellious. Tris, a divergent, claims, "Deep inside me I know the answer: I am being reckless. I will probably gain nothing. I will probably die. And more disturbing still: I don't really care." The circumstances in Tris’s society make her become so angry, that she cannot even control being reckless and is mindless of the damage that could be done. No matter what the circumstances are, any set standard can have a negative effect on the one's well-being. It can alter the way we act, such as the decisions that we make. However, some of us take a different route than others. For instance, Thoreau decided it was best to isolate himself. On the other hand, Tris felt that it was best to become rebellious and go against society. Society can also transform the way we think. Similarly in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the patients were categorized in types. This categorization can be to blamed in the society.
