Toy manufacturers are promoting gender-biased by producing and selling more toys that are male, if they are biased towards them or if they are biased towards females then they would make, and sell more toys that are female. I believe all of the action figures in the Star Wars Monopoly are male. Also the action figures found on store shelves are male too, which can show that the Star Wars producers are clearly biased towards the men. But this time it is not really because they are biased towards male toys, but it is because they do not want to show that Rey plays a large role in the long awaited movie. Not only does she play a huge role, but she is the main protagonist in the movie, so the producers want that to stay a secret. However, there
A very short time ago, in a world very well known, the famous Star Wars movies were brought to creation. George Lucas originally exposed the original Star Wars in 1977, and it has continued to up to present day. The ideas Lucas created through these movies helped evolve other films. One of the things that the prior Star Wars didn’t evolve though was female representation in movies. The representation of women in past Star Wars films compared to the most recent Star Wars film has substantially evolved in the characterization of females. Through watching all Star Wars films, I can personally say that there was a dramatic change in how females were perceived in past Star Wars films compared to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
There is a long shot of a man crouching in an alcove of a corridor. He
Star Wars IV A New Hope is a science fantasy film written and directed by George Lucas. Fictional characters help us understand ourselves. Star Wars IV A New Hope teaches us about life and ourselves in many ways such as death, loss, pain and courage are experiences that we will go through during our lives.
In doing so, it displays the way our society has progressed to view women as physically capable as men. The importance of this idea cannot be overstated. The Force Awakens was a highly anticipated movie with a fan base that stretched around the world. Adults and children all know of Star Wars, and to depict the hero of the newest episode as a female sends strong messages to everyone. Little girls look up to Rey and feel inspired by her actions. Little boys who see a female as the hero will view her as their equal and respect her. The countries who still view women as lesser beings will see Rey’s strength and independence. While it may not urge them to act, it should certainly give them something to consider about the way they view their own wives and
On May 25, 1977, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was released. George Lucas created the science fiction series using Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey plot structure. Campbell created the plot structure by expanding on psychologist Carl Jung’s idea of the archetype. Archetypes are reoccurring symbols that can be found in literature, music, and art. Lucas found that Campbell’s Hero’s Journey was the perfect structure for the plot of Star Wars. The Hero’s Journey consists of ten steps which the protagonist, usually the hero, has to complete. Throughout the movie, George Lucas perfectly orchestrated all ten steps of the Hero’s Journey, and also used dozens of the archetypes that Campbell created.
Throughout 13, 1977, 21, Jonathan Lethem explains how he was thirteen years old and watched Star Wars twenty one times in the summer of 1977. He goes into detail about each time and explains how he saw things differently or how his experience of the movie had changed. Later in the story, Jonathan states that his parents got a divorce and his mom has health issues. The topic of the story transforms at this time and puts more focus on how he used Star Wars as a distraction from his real life.
In 1949 Joseph Campbell published his book on myth and heroic archetypes known as “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”. Most importantly, the book outlined the 17 stages of a mythological hero's journey. Star Wars: A New Hope is no exception to the many stories that contain a lot of the main principles presented in the 17 stages of a mythological hero's journey. While writing Star Wars, George Lucas became fascinated with Joseph Campbell’s book. Even though this wasn't necessarily the basis of his story, he was certainly influenced by his obsession with the monomyth.
In the article “Gender-Neutral Toy Sections Are Good For Boys, Too” written by Megan Condis, Condis goes over the recent incident with Target removing gender specific toy aisles. People claim that it will help girls more considering that most of the girls toys are labeled with gender while the boys toys stand as a “default”. In her argument she states that although it will benefit girls from making them have to think they have to stick to only “girl” toys, it will benefit boys because they can now break that idea that they have to play with “boy” toys. I completely agree with Condis in her argument and fully believe that the gender specific toys affect boys just as much, if not more.
External influences may guide an individual towards their destiny, but only the person themselves can attain their full potential once they believe in their own ability to succeed. As American positivist author Norman Vincent Peale once said, “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy” (Brainy Quote). This can be seen in George Lucas’ Star Wars IV: A New Hope, the protagonist, Luke Skywalker, is an isolated young farmer on the planet Tatooine who is propelled in an unexpected mission to save the Rebel Alliance Leader, Princess Leia, as they struggle to defeat the Galactic Empire. To that effect, when analyzing George Lucas’ film from a Jungian psychoanalytic perspective, Luke is the main character
A “composite” of the character, including film or book title, personal/demographic information of their characteristics of giftedness, and any unique challenges they face are provided.
The romance genre is our vision of an ideal and innocent world. In our imagination, this world is full of hope and possibility. Romance shows a place where people are at their happiest and in their most desirable circumstances. It usually is associated in the summer, and always starts positively and ends positively. One of the many controversies we have today are based on the gender stereotype challenges that we must face when handling consumer trends. An example is the argument which is getting many consumers riled up. The newest Star Wars Movie: Star Wars The Force Awakens is putting out new merchandise for their movie. However, there is a lack of the main female character,Rey, in many of the Star Wars:
The story begins thirty years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. The First Order has risen from the ashes of the Galactic Empire and is opposed by General Leia Organa and the Resistance, both of which seek to find the missing Jedi Master Luke Skywalker who had disappeared. In the hassle of this search, new heroes rise in the form of Rey, a Force-sensitive scavenger from Jakku Finn, a stormtrooper who defected from the First Order and Poe Dameron, the best pilot in the Resistance. They are helped by Han Solo in their search for Skywalker and their mission to destroy the First Order's new superweapon, Starkiller Base, which targets the New Republic and the Resistance for destruction. They are opposed by villains such
Stars Wars: The Force Awakens is one of my personally favorite books, not just because it was written by Alan Dean Foster but because it holds many qualities that most books do not possess. The book is set 30 years after the events of
Star Wars was an extraordinary movie series in the 80’s and Disney made a new episode in the Star Wars Saga. The Force Awakens is the new movie Disney released. The protagonist is Rey, a young woman who was born on Jakku. The toy industry has made new toys of the new characters in The Force Awakens. Recently, what has shocked so many people is that in the game, Monopoly/Star Wars the protagonist (Rey) was not included into this version of Monopoly. I think that the most important movie characters, especially the protagonist of the story, should appear in these toys or games. As the article “Asleep at the switch? ‘Force Awakens’ heroine missing from toy lines” states, “A social media firestorm erupted over the lack of Rey in a new ‘Star Wars:
