“Starbucks is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world.”(Starbucks, 2015) They have several ways to reduce their impact on environment. Whether Starbucks can maintain or increase its profits when making environmental-responsible decisions depend on the decisions they made. Three basic environmental-friendly activities—recycling cups, encouraging personal tumblers and reducing greenhouse gas emission—show that it is possible for Starbucks to maintain or increase profits when encouraging personal tumblers reducing greenhouse gas emission but not for recycling cups. Thus, it is possible for Starbucks to make environmentally-responsible decisions that will provide positive spin-offs to society, but still maintain or increase its profits.

Recycling Cups
As a coffee company, one thing they can do to reducing waste is to recycle those used cups in the global company-owned stores. In 2008 Starbucks set a goal to “implement front-of-store recycling in all stores located in U.S. and Canada by 2015”.(Starbucks, 2008) Figure 1 and 2 show that the percentage of store locations with front-of-store recycling rose dramatically from 5 per cent in 2010 to 47 per cent in 2014. However, it is still far from the 100 per cent goal and only finished near half of the goal.
