As was read in Chapter 8 of our textbook, Starbucks is utilizing a loyalty program to attract and retain their customers. Starbucks can accomplish this by utilizing a QR code on which a customer uses from their mobile device which speeds up purchasing their favorite drink. This brings up questions such as, what other companies are using information systems technology to create their own way of attracting and retaining customers? What are the benefits of a program such as this to both the customer and the retailer? What potential issues or drawbacks are there when implementing such technology? Finally, are there any new technologies out now or are being deployed now that are not known to all the retailers? These questions will be answered throughout this case study. To start with, we will look at an example of such a rewards program. Walmart Rewards Program When searching for a retailer that has a rewards program, I did not think to look at Walmart at first. However, upon further investigation, I located information about a rewards program Walmart has in the form of a prepaid debit card. Yacik (2016) describes the card as a prepaid debit card that can be reloaded with money and can be utilized when making online purchases anywhere either Visa or MasterCard debit cards can be used (para. 2).
