The Statue of Gudea is a prehistoric piece created in 2090 B.C. The Statue of Gudea is a sculpture in the round made of Diorite. This piece was made in the Neo-Sumerian period (“Statue of Gudea | Neo-Sumerian | Neo-Sumerian | The Met.”). The Statue of Gudea uses pattern and depth to create an intriguing and complex ancient piece.
The Statue of Gudea is made of a thick and heavy stone. Creating The Statue of Gudea would take a significant amount of time to create, perhaps months or years. There are also detailed inscriptions and patterns that would take a lot of focus and a time to create. The Statue of Gudea has some imperfections and looks damaged in some areas. The head of the statue is cracked at the bottom. This cracking makes me believe the head has likely been reattached. The face emphasizes the eyes. It does this by making the eyes larger than normal. The oversizing creates an intense effect that brings attention to the eyes. Also, by the eyes, are the eyebrows, which are also larger than usual, and even patterned. This also draws attention toward the face of the piece. This makes me believe the creator wanted attention to be drawn towards the eyes or face. This oversizing and attention towards the eyes could be to show the power or intensity of the figure/ person being created in The Statue of Gudea. There is also some highlights given off in the eyes that bring focus to the area. The eye region also is given more detail than the nose or mouth. The mouth is not showing any emotion, this could be done to give the piece a more serious effect. The nose does not have any detail or oversizing. However, attention is brought to the nose from the highlight given off. There are also highlights on the right half of the face. All these details make the face a main focal point of the
