One of the most noticeable things that you see when you are entering the New York harbor is the enormous Statue of Liberty. It was given to the United States by the French as a symbol of friendship, however, there is great meaning behind the statue. The Statue of Liberty, officially “Liberty Enlightening the World”, was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and completed in July 1884 (“Liberty 1). The Statue of Liberty is a monumental sculpture, portraying a woman escaping the chains of tyranny, which lay at her feet. For over a century, the Statue of Liberty has stood valiantly in the open air, symbolizing freedom not only in America but throughout the world. She has held a patriotic place in each and every American heart since she was unveiled in October 1886 (Outman 363). She has greeted all the immigrants into Ellis Island, announcing the denouement of their journey to the "land of the free" (N.S.). Held aloft in her right hand is a flaming torch, representing liberty. Her left hand grasps a tablet …show more content…

After arriving to the United States workers spent about four months reassembling the statue and mounting it on the pedestal. The statue’s height reached 305 feet (or 93 meters), including the pedestal (N.S.) . In 1892, the U.S. government opened a federal immigration station on Ellis Island, located near Bedloe’s Island in Upper New York Bay. Between 1892 and 1954, some 12 million immigrants were processed on Ellis Island before receiving permission to enter the United States. From 1900-14, during the peak years of its operation, some 5,000 to 10,000 people passed through every day (History.com
A statue constructed in the name of liberty arose from the expansive Atlantic more than a century ago. The values of equality and justice coupled with the promises of freedom remain immoveable like the cooper medium and the stone foundation of which the statue arises. An icon ingrained it the spirit of the United States, the Statue of Liberty is the physical representation of American ideals. It is the “light of liberty” that illuminates the path for the “tired,” and the “poor,” seeking shelter from the shadows of tyranny and persecution. The statue has been symbol of hope in a better future and a new beginning to immigrants seeking a fresh start. Ideals, along with the symbols that represent them, however are merely man made. And like the
In 1865 when the American Civil War was close to the end, a French historian Edouard de Laboulaye suggested that France should create and give to the United States a statue that would symbolize the nation’s success in building a viable democracy. However, because of the lock of money, the work on the statue didn’t start until the end of 1875. The creator of the statue is the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi who created the statue out of sheets of hammered copper and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the creator of Eiffel Tower created the statue’s steel frame. The female form represented by the sculpture is based on Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. The statue was given to the United States and was
Over twelve million immigrants infiltrated the United States of America from 1892 to 1954 through a small island in New York Harbor called Ellis Island. Throughout the years, Ellis Island served as a gateway for
“The New Colossus” is a poem written by Emma Lazarus that is inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. This is the poem that we as Americans use as words of inspiration. From October 28, 1886, the date of when the Statue of Liberty was built and dedicated, to the year 2017, we have used the poem’s words to live by. While some people think that it is time for a change, others say that we should leave the poem to stay, for it is a historical remembrance of everything that we have stood up for. This poem also represents the welcoming of immigrants, the freedom that we fought for, and the freedom of religion.
Ellis Island was 'the door to America' which was opened on January 1st, 1892. Immigrants came here from their countries to stay in ours. It was a major immigration station for the United States from 1892 to 1943. It has been part of the Statue of Liberty since 1965. Between 1880 and 1900 9 million immigrants arrived in America, which was the largest number of arrivals in a 20 year period. The immigrants mostly stayed in the New England areas, such as New York and Massachusetts. This alarmed older Americans, because they feared that the country and system would fail because of the new 'impurities' in the land. In other words the shift in nationalities. The first immigrants to come to Ellis Island were from Ireland, Germany,
In the story “The New Colossus” it talks about the Europeans wanting to come to America and pursue the American dream. They had the belief that the Statue of Liberty, in this story she is called The Mother Of Exiles, is asking the countries to “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States, she was the golden door to America, offering refugee to those who were seeking freedom.
Ellis Island, which was an immigration station, opened in 1892. Ellis Island was a place where Immigrants from all over Southern and Eastern Europe, Greece, Serbia and Hungary to name a few came to have a chance at getting into America. Immigrants came to Ellis Island for many different reasons such as war, drought, famine, religion, and political and economic oppression. Although coming to Ellis Island was one step closer to freedom, the immigrants still had many more obstacles to face. The immigrants had to face numerous medical inspections, and also legal inspections to make sure they were fit to come to America.
When- This immigration station was not functioning until January 1, 1892. In the year of 1907 Ellis Island reached its peak of most immigrants with over 1.25 million immigrants coming into the U.S. through Ellis Island. This gateway lasted from 1880 to 1924.
The Ellis Island known today was founded by the New York State government in 1855 and it was the first immigrant processing station established in the United States. This maverick immigrant processing station was originally based on an island off the southwest tip of Manhattan, Castle Garden. The NY State Government placed this Immigrant processing station off shore for two main reasons. The first of those reasons being, for the protection of the immigrants who were often robbed or tricked out of their already meager funds by city swindlers. Also, to further prevent the spread of any infectious diseases that potential immigrants may have been carrying. Prior to the establishment of the Castle Garden processing station, Immigrants were allowed to simply walk freely into Manhattan harbor after departing from their ships. In April of 1890, due to legal issues, the castle garden project was ended and the US government purchased a swampy and small island to the to the southeast of Manhattan, where they would construct a new immigrant processing center and
Ellis Island was an immigration station that was used during the years of 1892-1954 which is approximately 62 years. Throughout those 62 years more than 12 million immigrants entered through Ellis Island. Immigrants came from places like Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe In Europe there were… amount of people etc. Many immigrants from different countries went through Ellis Island to find a new life to live in the U.S. At Ellis Island there were a bunch of workers that all performed tasks to help the immigrants get into the country safely.
The New York Harbor was a major port entry for immigrants in 1892. Many immigrants coming from across the ocean to America thought of Lady Liberty as a symbol that they were free from poverty and sadness. They saw it as the beginning of a new life in a new country. When they saw the statue, it gave them a lot of hope, and I find it important that the statue stands for hope in times when we need something to remind us that we will be safe, no matter the circumstances.
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most well know symbols of the United States, across the world. For this reason I chose to analyze the dramatic effect it creates, and what methods it implores to invent this "universal" meaning. It is one of the strongest visual representations of the ideals which our country is founded upon. I intend to defend the argument that the Statue of Liberty posses the power of persuading human thought using the terms encompassed in Kenneth Burke's Pentad, shaping the definition of "America" for people through out the world.
The New Colossus changed Americans view of the Statue of Liberty forever. Lady Liberty was a gift from France to celebrate the friendship the two countries endured during the Revolutionary War. It was not supposed to be a symbol of immigrating, but became one due to the poem, The New Colossus, by Emma Lazarus, written in 1887. The New Colossus welcomes immigrants to the U.S.A. on the base of the State of Liberty. The poem references the statue and connects it to the immigrants in America.
There are few objects that can be compared to the significance of the figure known as the Statue of Liberty. It is one of the greatest works of its time and still stands today as a meaningful entity of independence to the world. The statue is a great tribute to the concept of global freedom that had its roots in America. It was created to display the worldwide objective of peace and tranquility. The fact that another model of this icon stands today in a world capital shows the effect that this figure has inscribed upon the world. In addition, it represents the ideas that the United States was built upon and those that the people have lived by to this very day. Its most paramount features in its role through American history are its
