Status of Women in Society

"The female doesn't really expect a lot from life. She's here as someone's keeper — her husband's or her children's." This quote from a young mother at the time of the 1960s describes the life of women in throughout era. Disgusted by their low quality of life, a plethora of women from all over the United States came together to fight the patriarchy and sexism that oppressed them on a daily basis. They fought to better the treatment of women nationwide and to create a country, and hopefully a world, that saw women as equal to men, not just as “the second sex.” The struggle for women’s rights is a continual issue even into modern times, and while the women of the 1960s didn’t solve all of the problems women faced, they were the spark that ignited the flame of feminism. When women started to fight for their rights, it changed everything from the way companies advertised to the way men thought of their wives, who were most likely at home. Women have power, power over you, me and everyone. What makes them so special is that we (men) can’t live without them. They are sensitive, and at the same time strong, they care, they love, and most important, they are beautiful. Women have come a long way in society throughout time. They 've gone from being nothing to being something. But yet, there are issues with women in today’s society. Naomi Wolf with her essay “A women’s place” and Zulu Kente’s poem “I know you good woman” they address that the role of woman in our society needs a lot of improvement. Women face daily issues such as their voices are not being heard, they are being paid less than men, their opportunities and education are very limited, male sexism through woman, and last but not least, woman are criticized by their physical appearance.

Throughout history, we can see that humans have developed quickly in almost all fields including advancements politically, scientifically, and morally. However, one of the greatest advancement, which to this day has not been fully achieved by humanity as a whole, is the equality between the two genders. Since the beginning of civilization, we come to see that all societies with an exception of a few, were mainly male dominated. Men were always seen as superior to women. Men were not just seen as the head of the household, but they were seen as the leaders and organizers of all political, social, and economic affairs for both men and women. However, as time progressed, so did women. Gradually, women were more involved in the work force due to many factors including wars and primarily due to the industrial revolution. Women took the role of nurses and hospitality workers during wars, and as the industrial revolution initiated, they began to work in factories for low pay. During the last half of the 20th century, women’s rights, referring to the social and human rights of women, became a very highly emphasized and recognized issue especially in the United States. By the 1960’s the role of women completely transformed. Women more than ever before, began to enter the paid work force, participated in protests demanding equal rights, and established organizations such as the National Organization for Women. Over the span of many centuries, women have been undermined and ridiculed by the reality of a bitter society. A female’s sex generally predetermined the uneventful course she would be expected to take throughout her life. Promising opportunities were rare and for ages, ladies were confined to the home with little more than a puppet role to play. Common household chores were a part of the daily agenda, and unfailing devotion to a husband was anticipated (Cruea). The initiative push by The National Woman Suffrage Association provided a source of encouragement for women searching for impartial justice in basic aspects of everyday life. The women’s rights movement-though a long, rocky road-essentially led from bigotry to equality.

Previously, women have existed in a society ruled by man and have been put under the expectation to be at home raising the children and taking care of the home, while men were expected to go to work and provide for the family. Since the beginning of civilization, women have been victims to prejudice that eventually “compelled women at last to throw off the political, economic, intellectual and social shackles that bound them” (Joshi 13). The complexity of women’s hardship during the nineteenth century, in the fight for equality, resulted in many women getting arrested and looked down upon from their communities. However the working women enjoyed the fact that they were out of their home working and they decided to stay permanently in the work field. After WWII, the women's rights movement had difficulty coming together on important issues. In the time during the women’s rights movement, the movement had encountered so many obstacles they were coming in contact with. Obstacles such as woman being portrayed as sex figures in advertising and in the media and violence being used against women. Not only was this an issue during time where the movement took most effect, but still till this day it still occurs. The most popular issues women are encountering with today is the wage difference between a woman and a man and a woman’s reproductive health.

It is sad, but true that many women in the world still do not have the opportunity to achieve any position of importance in a society. A woman is characterized by housekeeping, making food and taking care of the children. Her position is at home, unlike the men. The men are known as protectors to their families by going to work. Their responsibilities are to make sure the family has food, clothes and other needs. Many countries have come far with the importance of equality, but there are more left that haven’t. The fight for women rights is still relevant.

Throughout the course of history, women have widely been relegated to a position inferior to their male counterparts. Mothers, wives, caretakers of domestic life—they were expected to fill these roles and fully devote themselves to the men in their lives, all the while not considered equal to them, but rather man 's property to care for; however, in recent centuries, the status quo has started to change. As an increasing number of women sought equality among the sexes and the realization of their worth as individuals, the role of women in society adjusted to expand beyond traditional notions. While their position in the world remains unclear, it certainly continues to be questioned and challenged by millions of people around the world.

At the same time middle- and upper-class women were expected to stay at home as idle, decorative symbols of their husbands' economic success. The only other option for respectable women of any class was work as governesses, clerks, shop assistants, and servants. Such conditions encouraged the feminist movement. Although by 1970 most women throughout the world had gained many rights according to law, in fact complete political and economic, but social equality with men remained to be achieved (Lyons; Min, 2002).

In the early 1950s, women were accepted to fulfill the role of a wife and a mother. They were treated as a second-class citizens. Society expected the women to find happiness through taking care of their children and husbands. They were expected to stay home, while the men worked outside and had a career. For some women, accepting the roles that society created for them was difficult after World War II. During World War II, men had to go to war. As a result, some women had to join the workforce to fill the men’s place. After this many women wanted to pursue their careers outside home because they felt the satisfaction of having a job of their own. However, many women stayed silent. They did not stand for their rights because of the expectations

The women’s movement paved the rode to many, if not all, the rights we as women have today. Up to this point a women’s role was to look after her husband, children and home. Taking care of her family and home were the only priority of a woman. She couldn’t even think about a professional career, because that was not part of a women’s role according to society. Taking care of her husband and home was a women’s happiness and she wasn’t expected to go out and look for more.

A women's role has changed tremendously and is making its greatest impact in our society today. Many years ago, women's contribution to society was limited and controlled by men. Women are standing tall and are playing a major role in many important areas. Women's role has changed at an accelerating rate and have part in areas such as Politics, Professional Training Jobs, Medicine,Business and Law. Formerly they were not part of any political matter, but they have advanced in many aspects. For example, women have attained power and have been growing in political office.

Women's empowerment has become a significant topic of discussion in development and economics . it also refer to the increasing and the improvement of economic and social and legal rights to women to ensure that women have equal right . is it essential to Empower women to participate fully in economic life across all sectors in order to build stronger economies and to achieve internationally agreed goals for development and sustainability, and improve the quality of life for community as whole .

The social role which I feel that I occupy and that I am going to focus on in this essay is the one of a women in this society. I believe I have been socialized into this role for numerous reasons. Throughout this paper I will explain how I think I have been socialized into this role.

It is general belief in our society that role of women is restricted in four walls of home or for mainly household activities. Economy of any country can’t boom without contributing women. The growing industrialization, urbanization and social legislation and with the spread of education and awareness women have shifted from kitchen to higher level of professional activities. Today’s women are taking more and more professional and technical degrees to cope up with market need.The position of women and their position is any society is an index of its civilization. Women are to be considered as equal partner in the process of development.
