The reading passage tries to give some reasons to clarify the extinction of a huge marine mammal which is famous as Steller's sea cow while the professor on the lecture looks at this concept through a different lens and tries to dismiss all of them. First of all, the reading mentions that overhunting by native Siberian could be considered as one major theory causing their extinction mainly because Steller's sea cows could be considered as a good source of food. However, the professor on the lecture brings up the fact that the Steller's sea cow was an extremely huge animal; as a result, by hunting a couple of them, the native Siberian could support their food needs for one month; therefore, Steller's sea cow’s extinction was not related to people's
I believe that underwater noise has an effect on marine animals such as whales. Using information from the passages I will prove my point. Their numbers are declining rapidly and I believe that underwater noise has some involvement in the rapid decrease in their population numbers. The information given within the two passages will help prove my point.
Skomal introduces his claim by sharing an anecdote of an early incident taken place in the 1950’s of two fishermen that killed a “potential menace” (Skomal). His strong language evokes a creature. Most importantly, he uses the word “potential”. We don’t know for a fact if the shark was out to seek harm or just innocently swimming around the ocean without any intentions. Flash forward to fifty years later, he shares a part he was involved in by rescuing a shark from the same area. These two contradicting events help support his argument about our attitudes toward the shark over the decades.
According to Ohio State University, Brangus cows originated from Brahman and Angus cattle. Brangus cattle come in different colors such as red and black. The Brangus breed is actually a very muscular breed. Brangus have ears that are similar to Brahman, a little droopy. They have an appealing look, they have a smaller hump-like figure on their backs similar to a Brahman. Brangus cows can be a mix of one to three-quarters brahman, the rest Angus.
The lecture explained how the population of sea otters declined, due to the environmental pollution. First, the oil rigs along the Alaskan coat serve as an indication to pollution. This directly refutes the reading passage which states that predation was most likely the reason, since the bodies of the dead sea otters didn't wash on the shores.Secondly, the passage mention that the water samples that were extracted from the sea revealed the presence of chemicals. Again, this contradicts with the lecture which claims that the whales which the otters consume were not available anymore. Which had forced the sea otters to change their diet to include small sea animals. Thirdly, the lecture mentions that the decrease in sea otters population was
In Pink Sheep’s house, Homie Dolphin was playing video games and eating burritos and Mountain Dew. When these two guys were too focused on the games a hater broke in the house and took their supplies to burritos and Mountain Dew. On his way out he took Homie Dolphin’s gold necklace worth a trillion dollars.
There are many ways that this animal could have become extinct. Besides humans there were no major predators known to kill this animal. The main reason for it becoming extinct was hunting it for its fur. There was no law on how many you could catch and kill. Another is that the young sea minks couldn't stay alive because the parents either got trapped or killed.
The concept of species going extinct was not always accepted as fact. It wasn’t until the discovery of the American mastodon that the concept of extinction was even considered. With the discovery of the bones, When the bones were discovered, many theories were constructed, such as that the bones were actually from multiple creatures, or that this was simply an undiscovered species and hadn’t been found. The discovery of other mysterious, lost species led to the concept of extinction, and the idea that the mammoth was indeed a species that, while it once was prevalent, no longer roamed the Earth. In chapter three, Kolbert writes about her visit to Iceland in which she learned about the loss of the great auk, a three foot tall bird reminiscent of a large penguin or puffin. She then proceeds to write the tragedy of the great auks, that being that they were regularly hunted and killed. The final moments of the great auk’s species can be tracked down, as they were captured and sold and their only egg was broken. The concept of human-caused extinctions wasn’t new, as Darwin wrote about how the Galápagos tortoises were dying out very rapidly due to overhunting. The extinction of species stems from events that drastically affect them, be them environmental changes to human
The ecological conditions might have changed quickly and the species was not able to adapt to those conditions, which eventually lead the species to go extinct.
In Wisconsin the only state-endangered mammal is the American Marten. There are many theories on why the Marten has been having a rough time being reintroduced into the northern woods of Wisconsin. One of the theories is the Martens competition with Fisher, they exhibit overlapping niches and have developed a competition of the struggles for resources. However, they do coexist in Canada in have kept stable populations. The Marten doesn’t only have to face competition to hinder its effort to be reintroduced to the land it also faces climate change hurting the way fishers survive and thrive during the winter.
Analyze the “Happy Cows” campaign that was developed for the California Milk Advisory Board to promote Real California Cheese from an integrated marketing communications perspective. Why do you think the campaign has been so successful?
The article states the cause and effect by saying "the numbers of big fish predators decreased slowly. In 1970, their populations started to drop. Around that time, fishing ships began using new tools that led to catching more fish. The numbers have been falling quickly ever since." (paragraph 5)
The reading passage tries to give some reasons to show that the number of sea otters, a small mammal living along the western coast of North America, has significantly declined because of the environmental pollution. On the other hand, the professor on the lecture looks at this concept through a different lens and believes that attacking by the predators like orca are possible for this problem.
In this paper, I will be summarizing the theory of overkill in chapter two of ‘’Twilight of the Mammoths’’, by Paul Martin. Before, I get into this started a little background information about who the author is. Martin was a scientist that studied forms of life existing in prehistoric times that was represented by the fossils of plants and animals. His overkill theory was that he argued, that humans were very much responsible of over hunting for the Late Pleistocene extinction of megafauna of mammoth, slots and Neanderthals in northern Eurasia and North and South America in the last thousands years ago. ‘’ to me the core piece of evidence for human involvement is that when viewed globally, near time extinctions took place episodically, in a pattern not correlating with climatic change or any known factor other than the spread of species. Extinctions followed prehistoric human colonization’s in a ‘’deadly syncopation’’ to use the words of mammalogist Ross MacPhee. (Martin, 51) It was also stated that when humans moved into different areas of the world that’s when huntable animals were wiped out. The archaeological
Famous for its unique geological formation, Voidokilia Bay, meaning Cow's Belly is located on the south west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is one of the most fascinating and beautiful beaches of Greece, with fine, warm red sand, (due to corals) and turquoise waters. The perfectly shaped semi circle resembles the Greek letter Omega. Voidokilia beach was mentioned in Homer's Odyssey and believed to have been used as port by the King Nestor. As such it has remained of high historical and archeological significance and left untouched by civilization. The beach and surrounding area, including the Gialova Lagoon, is protected under the Natura 2000 program. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas at the beach so come prepared. If you are feeling
Commercial whaling is a serious world issue that has always been difficult for those who are in support and those who are against it. Each group defends their side with convincing arguments. Morally, whaling is wrong, but do the reasons for whaling outweigh the reasons to cease the primitive hunts? By studying the effects of whaling, realizing how culture has changed over time, and taking note of the money that would be saved, it can clearly be seen that there is no longer a current need for whaling to continue. Efforts have been made to try to stop whaling, but with no help from any authoritative figure, nothing has been done to regulate the whaling. The famous sea shepherd, known for its strikes against whaling, can even be seen on
