Step Four: Student Speeches My year involved in Global Connect has taught me that the world has many more issues than the common ones discussed in media. I have been able to determine which issues over others I feel most passionate about, and that I can have a sustainable career while helping others better their lives. The two issues I personally feel most attached to are gender inequality and access to education. Being an educated woman in society I believe education has influenced my life for the better, and I want other children and girls to be able to experience the joy of learning instead of being confined to outdated gender roles. Many people simply disregard the gender injustice seen everyday in minute amounts or extreme amounts simply because it …show more content…
All of us living in Orange County and the United States have easily been desensitized to issues, which Global Connect has helped to bring back to the forefront. Yet there still are citizens that are unaware of the injustice that persists in a communal scale and the global scale. From a personal standpoint, I want to deflect the gender stereotypes we’ve all grown up hearing. Instead of creating more problems for the next generation to fix, I want our generation to produce progress for the next generation to carry on. Keeping all of this in mind, to meet my goals my career field of preference is International Media and Publications. Since the job location opportunities are global I feel this has the most lasting impact, which is my goal. Thankfully the education requirement is a Bachelor’s Degree, which I’m thankful for because it’s less time in the classroom and more time making a difference. The field also allows for all media whether traditional or new technology, which can help reach more age demographics since not everyone gets influenced through the same form of media. Which brings me to my next point, of how media influences everyone’s lives and most choices. In the modern day,
Media influence is one of the most powerful economic and cultural forces today. By deciding who gets to talk, what shapes the debate, who writes, and what is important enough to report, media shape our understanding of who we are and what we can be. You could go to a film, switch on the TV, tune in to the radio, turn the pages of a magazine, or surf online. Regardless of your choice of media, you’d have a good chance of encountering stereotypes that perpetuate gender discrimination. The “Miss Representation” documentary film written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom exposes how mainstream media and culture contribute to the under representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
As a female Television, Radio & Film student in the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, I encounter gender as it pertains to the communications and media industries every day. According to the Fall 2017 census provided by the university, the entire student body (undergraduate, graduate, and law students) is 52.5% female and 47.5% male. On the other hand, the Newhouse student body is roughly 60% female and 40% male, but it has not always been that way. Through the following photos, I am going to examine how gender affects Newhouse students and faculty in Television, Radio & Film department by exploring the past, present, and future of the school.
Media is stuck in a loop and to diversify it needs to try something new. The end goal of most media, regardless of the form, is to produce revenue. Therefore methods that have proven to work in the past will be repeated until shown to be unsuccessful. A recent article in Feminist Magazine discussed an annual report released by the Women’s Media Center on gender bias in major US media creation. The report discussed some reasons as to why media creation is still geared towards males. The main cause dealt with how marketers utilize media to target the group of people that have the most disposable income, white males 18 – 49 (Mandanas, 2014). This mentality was been the status quo for years and does not take in consideration other groups or combined marketing
Reading Chapter 11: Gendered media reminded me why I majored in communications. The media has such a significant influence on all our lives. I wanted to be a part of that influence and to ultimately help turn the way society portrays people. The media’s influence can get into a person’s subconscious, and unwillingly it will control how we think and what we view as important. I would like to think I am not effected by the media, but I am. I tend to not settle for local news, I always make the effort to stay current on what is going on a global scale through different media outlets. With the rise of fake news I am constantly forced to question these sources and the agenda behind these new stories. It hurts me that in the United States we focus
In today’s 20th century, media plays a significant role within the everyday lives of Americans within today’s society. Rich, poor, black, or white, media is all around us and unconsciously shapes our thoughts and perceptions on an every day basis. One cannot hide from the media because it is intertwined in our lives from the shows we watch on television to the books and magazines we read and seek to learn from to the music we listen not only by choice but songs that are played in almost every store across America, all influence our perceptions on how we perceive the world. Whether we want to believe it or not our minds, thoughts, beliefs are all influenced by things within the media and especially there is a significant influence on how race
In today’s society, media is present in our lives 24/7 allowing it to have a major influence on our culture in both positive and negative ways.
The United States is called a “melting pot ” because the the varied groups of people that live in the country and interact every day, but the country also has an ugly history or discrimination against women and minorities. The broadcasting industry has been guilty of this discrimination. There has been blatant discrimination against women newscasters. “Women journalists initially had difficulty breaking into the broadcast news field and did not begin to make real strides towards equality until the 1960s and 1970s” ( Irvin) . This is very discouraging to young women interested in this
Throughout my life and educational career, I have always been the person who was “called on” to be the Master of Ceremonies for a program or to speak at an event. Like most people, I often changed my career goals—wanting to be a dentist one day, an educator the next. One thing remained constant, however—I talked and people listened. Since elementary school until present, I have been an anchor on my schools’ news teams. Currently, I function as anchor and producer of my school’s news team which I helped begin from the “bottom up”. I now realize that creativity and media are my passions, so now I am determined to pursue them as career goals. Aspiring to become a high-profile individual in the media, I intend on revolutionizing how individuals are portrayed in the media—particularly African Americans. Without a college education, I would not be able to become the media professional that I intend to become thus not being able to make an
Throughout my life I have had a wide array of life goals and possible future occupations ranging from Miss America, a playwright, and most recently, a Supreme Court justice. Most people tell me that my goals are “far fetched” or “improbable”, however I can’t imagine a future for myself that doesn’t revolve around making the world a better place for everyone. There are so many injustices and inequalities in our world, and even though I am a teenager I am doing all I can to educate myself about women’s rights and the rights of other marginalized groups. At my school, I am on the board of the Anti-Bullying Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, and the Gender Equality Club. I also go to Teens Against Relationship Abuse meetings outside of school. I write
I chose to somewhat relate myself and future career to that of the UN speech given by actress, and “activist” Emma Watson. She first introduces herself as the ambassadors for a feminist movement and goes on to tell how both men and women are at a disadvantage in today’s society. I feel as if this relates to my career, because I’m an artist, and what is art if not a bit pandering to both sides of the coin to gain respect and connections. I digress. The Whole speech is about equality and how we can work together to create a better future by not continuing with a separation of gender and class, especially in the United States and the Middle East. While I can’t really do much about the Middle East, I can start here by having a message of equality in my work and public guise about me, so there’ll be a positive message and tone being spread across to
Access to primary education for women has improved significantly except in some parts of Africa and Central Asia where there is still poor access to educational facilities. This global change occurred because of the goal set by the United Nations to “Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling” (We Can End Poverty 2015) Although this goal has not yet been fully achieved, it has contributed largely to the advances that have been made towards equal education. There are still over 20 influential countries that discriminate against women by preventing them from equal access to education. In these nations, gender inequality in education suppresses the independence, development, and sense of self-worth of women. We, as a well-educated community, need to stand up for the basic human rights of these girls and women by spreading awareness about this issue and supporting organizations that promote equal education for women across the world. Two examples of charitable organizations that support this cause are The United Nations Children's Fund, an organization that provides assistance to children and mothers in developing countries, and Heifer International, a non
We live in a society in which media has such a great influence on us, yet the influence is only in certain aspects and on certain people. “Mass media is arguably the most influential in molding public consciousness” (562). People might think that media is managed by a combination of different people but in reality, since the number of media companies is decreasing, only certain people control the industry and what gets to be put out to light. Since media is mostly controlled by a few people who belong to the 1%, the information that goes into the media is influenced by their beliefs as well as race, class, and even gender. Media influences every aspect of our lives since “media plays a key role in defining our cultural tastes, helping us locate
I am writing to you today because I believe that I deserve those ten extra points on my semester grade average, and not just cause I wanna pick up my grade even more although it is true but because I believe that I have put effort on the work, I am starting to understand what I am learning, and somethings I can do to improve my work in class that will help me get a better grade.
In particular, I want to focus on gender and international education. As a global citizen, a feminist, and someone who has taught abroad I’m passionate about narrowing the education gap between young boys and girls. Having been raised in a culture where males are expected to be the breadwinners, and thus their education is more highly valued, I have a particular empathy for girls who aren’t able to achieve their potential. Through nonprofit work, I plan on doing my part to ensure that all girls everywhere receive a quality
Running Start is an initial advantage over other students upon graduation. By the time of graduation one who has completed this program is granted an Associate’s Degree with their high school diploma. The program allows a student to take college classes while they complete high school. A student who does this program graduates with their Associate’s Degree without cost, Students also get to experience a college atmosphere, and students also have the opportunity to take courses that coincide with their chosen degree or career choice. Running start is a great program for high school students to complete. This is because a student becomes more independent, they have a loss of socialization in high school, and increases in adult social experiences, as well as different school schedules that are likely to not match up when there are breaks or cancellations of classes, which makes it seem as though there are longer breaks of time than the schedule of a full time high school student.
