On January 31, 2001 Logan Marr was found dead in an unfinished basement, yards of duct tape surrounding her, and a foster mother claiming that she just fell and hit her head. Sally Schofield, a respected caseworker at Maine's Department of Health and Human Services, had taken Logan in 2000. Although some people believe that vaccinations are not the best choice for them or their children, many negative effects can be seen when people choose against vaccines. Paul A. Children are suffering and dying because some parents are more frightened by vaccines than by the disease they prevent” (191). Since the anti-vaccination movement began people have been believing that vaccines are unhealthy, when in reality vaccines are protecting people from the unhealthy diseases. This movement has lead to an increase in outbreaks of preventable diseases throughout the United States. It was a privilege to listen to Stephanie Garrison share her story and provide encouragement for our own lives. Personally, I found it very admirable how willing she was to share and be vulnerable. Anyways, Stephanie is currently in her 14th year at Southeastern and serves as the Assistant Athletic Director under Drew Watson. Beginning in the athletics department in January of 2014, as the Director of Operations. Before she joined the athletic department, she served as the Director of Event Services, Resident Director, Online learning coordinator and a variety of other departments at Southeastern. Susan Beth Pfeffer decided that she wanted to be a writer when her father dedicated the law book he was writing to his daughter. Right then and there she wrote her first little story about the love between a pair of scissors and an Oreo cookie. Her childhood experiences form the basis of her writing, seeing that she grew up in the suburbs in New York. This explains why most of her books focus on young people growing up in the suburbs. Pfeffer went on to New York University. After getting her degree in radio, television, and motion pictures she started a writing course and her first novel Just Morgan was published. Throughout her life she has published more than 75 books and some of them include: A Year without Michael, Devils Den, Life as We Knew it and Family of Strangers. The themes of her books usually include emotional problems, divorce, historical fiction, and people having fantasies of modeling/acting. Her science fiction stories contain apocalyptic futuristic events like her novel Life as We Knew it.

Sarah Larson attended the University of Rhode Island and went in undecided. She decided to take NFS 210 to fulfill her science gen ed, and through this class and her professor, she fell in love with the field. NFS 210 is her favorite class to teach because this is a beginner class for many students. She discovered that this is the class that makes college students decide that they want to go into Nutrition, and this is the start of their Nutrition career.

Tamora Pierce is a young adult fantasy fiction author who is quite well known for the young, strong and rebellious heroines in all of her novels. She was born December 13th, 1954 in Fayette Country, Pennsylvania. During her childhood, her family moved a great deal and books became her solace. Her uncle gave her a set of books including several from A.A Milne, who wrote all of the “Winnie the Pooh” books, and Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat.” What really got her into writing was when one day, her father told her she should start writing down her stories instead of just telling them to herself out loud, while also giving her some of her first book ideas. After that it all writing and reading every genre for Pierce, until she got introduced to J.R.R Tolkein in the sixth grade which was her window into fantasy novel, then eventually science fiction. She began writing stories mimicking all her favourite authors writing styles, something she encourages every young writer to do now. Later on in life as she reflected on the writing she did as a child she said: “I tried to write the kind of thing I was reading, with one difference: the books I loved were missing teenaged girl warriors.

In contemporary society, victims are oppressed for petty incidents, and blamed for false faults. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, she paints the mockingbird to be innocents that are wrongly persecuted and oppressed. Atticus Finch ,a character in the novel, states that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird ,for they do not harm anyone. Amanda Todd is a mockingbird in society because she never harmed anyone, yet everyone harms her.

Success is a funny thing. Some define success as having a lot of money or a high power career. Others define it as how happy a person is within their life. No matter how success is defined, Margaret Mead's view on success applies. "But while we often rejoice in the success of people far removed from ourselves-people who work in another profession, live in another community, or are endowed with a talent that we do not especially want for ourselves-we tend to regard the success of people close at hand, within our own small group, as a threat" (Margaret Mead).
