Stephen Fuller Austin: A Brief Biography

There were several extremely fascinating aspects regarding the history of Texas found in Passionate Nation's pages 195-219 and Major Problems in Texas History's pages 146-150 and 162-167. One of the most salient of these was the fact that Texas was its own independent nation. This fact was fairly startling for a number of different reasons. One of these is the fact that the United States allowed another nation to be created within its borders. This is something rarely done in history, and probably never done again in the history of the United States.

Born in 1973, Stephen F Austin is quite a crucial character in the history of Texas. Though he was born in the Wythe County in Virginia, Stephen spent most of his time during his youth in Missouri (Henderson 4). His father, Moses had a lead mining job that gave him enough returns to take Stephen to the best schools in the county. Moses however later lost the family business in the financial panic that took place in 1819 (6). Stephen is remembered for his several achievements during his time that paved way to the independence of Texas. They had one boy and an Unborn girl and Travis started the publication of a newspaper and even joined the militia. He gave every evidence of staying in Alabama. But one day Travis decided that he was going to go to Texas, so he abandoned his wife,son, and his unborn daughter.

Sam Houston father was a revolutionary war veteran and a major. When sam was young he was put to work in his older brother’s shop till he grew up more to get out of the house. When sam got older he found a family with the cherokee and became friends with the chief. The chief took him in when he was only 8 years old.

Stephen Fuller Austin died today at the age of 43 in Columbia Texas. He was survived by his sister, Emily Austin Perry. Born in Virginia to his parents Moses and Mary Brown Austin. His father moved the family to Spanish Missouri where Moses found the town of Potosi in 1799, which was the first American settlement west of the Mississippi River. Austin was known as the father of Texas because of his success in recruiting families to move to New Spain.(1) He was responsible for the settling of more than 1200 families. (2) Austin’s colony was the wealthiest settlement due to the fact that the families there had begun raising cotton, burros and other goods for export, much of which went through New Orleans.(3)

States issued new banking charter during the years following the War of 1812 as citizens required more credit. The need for more credit was fueled by better transportation with people immigrating westward in search of land. The US Congress chartered the 2nd Bank of the United States in 1816. The market expansion fueled by rising speculation of lands and rising prices brought about the panic of 1819. The economic downturn forced Congress and the courts to look harder at some of the issues on the forefront of the economy. The Supreme Court handed down a landmark opinion during this period concerning the 2nd United States Bank in McCulloch v Maryland. The case questioned the constitutionality of the bank. The Supreme Court ruled the bank was constitutional under the Necessary and Proper clause of the constitution with it “enumerated powers.” The Congress which had chartered the bank had the power to tax, borrow and regulate interstate commerce. Finally, the court ruled sovereignty of union lay with its people, not the individual states. Feller points out the “The bank, therefore, though a privately owned and managed concern was also in effect an arm of the federal government and states could not touch it” (49).
