Stephen King's 'Why We Crave Horror'

Stephen King Essay Illness and health are two very different concepts. Health is something that is living well, while illness is something not living well. Mentally ill is how Stephen King describes us all for liking horror movies, in his essay “Why We Crave Horror.” According to King, we all have anticivilization emotions that need to be released and are released through horror movies. While many believe the horror movie genre is too macabre and dark, King’s ideas are accurate because we would have to be mentally ill to enjoy others being harmed. King is the undisputed king of horror. “Why We Crave Horror” shows us how horror movies help us from the perspective of none other than the man who understands horror to the fullest. He is correct about us going to show bravery, to prove that we can “ride this roller coaster” (King 1). Roller coasters and horror movies have much in common: twists and turns, attractive to young people, and most of all the feeling of thrill we get from experiencing them. As King argues, the horror genre serves a specific purpose to allow us an outlet to let out anticivilization emotions. These movies let us lapse into our most simplistic mindset, enjoying the pain and suffering of other people. As King says, “it urges us to put away our more civilized and adult penchant for analysis and to become children again...the invitation to lapse into simplicity, irrationality, and even outright madness is extended so rarely” (King 2).
