While America is very much a melting pot of ethnicity, ideas, and culture, many citizens to this day face discrimination and inequality. Throughout generations of family lines, colored people have been alienated, mistreated, and stereotyped. This country that we live in claims that it provides the opportunity for “liberty and justice for all” but is that really true with all the hate and crime going on in this country? Race in this country plays a huge role in whether or not we get treated fairly. Unfortunately stereotypes are still lingering around today and people cannot help but judge others on the color of their skin tone.
In today’s society people are afraid of people with color mostly because of what is posted on the media or what the news tells us. In the short essay, “Just Walk on By: Black Men in Public Space” it said “She cast back a worried glance. To her, the youngish black man– a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket– seemed menacingly clothed. (Staples 339)” In that quote it showed that clearly the women judged him based on his looked and she was concerned for her safety and assumed that he would do something to her. It is upsetting to the man walking behind her because he mentioned “It was clear that she thought herself the quarry of a mugger, a rapist, or worst. (Staples 339)” This should not be someone’s first impression of anyone. He has now accepted the fact that he will be
