The daughter was around the same age as Michael so they were able to talk about how to go about their social lives and network themselves. While the son was around elementary school age, so he taught Michael to find beauty in the little things in life and to find the fun. Just as the children taught Michael, so did Leigh Anne and her husband. They taught Michael the importance of teamwork and that if he wanted to succeed in life that he could no longer go through life alone. He would have to reach out to people and ask for help. Through these intrapersonal and interpersonal relationship and communication, Michael was able to advance his communication skills, and take them to the one place where he did not at first but eventually excelled at, the football
They had to bench Michael till they got his birth certificate, but since he is from Cuba it would be hard to get it. Especially since his dad had died a few months ago and his mom died a long time ago before they came to America. Throughout the middle of the book he tried everything he could to get it. This guy who works for the child services got curious about him and his seventeen. Michael has been telling everyone that his dad was in Florida taking care of his sick uncle. The guy wanted to talk to dad to see if he was real. Luckily, Michael had his best friend relative to pretend that he was his
This movie is a prime example of employing interdependence. The Tuohy’s and Michael Oher have an instant connection once they meet. “I feel like this is the place I have always needed to call home”, Michael Oher speaks regarding the Touhy’s and their household. This shows the life long relationship that these people have created in such little time. Michael was first introduced to the Touhy’s at the point when, SJ (son of Leigh Anne and Sean) was hanging out with him at the local park.
After fulfilling his basic needs, Michael also achieved the safety needs where he had a sense of protection with his newly adopted family and environment that were surrounding him. According to Norwood (2009), living in a safe place and having protection from other is very important for human beings. In home, Anne treated Michael Oher as her own child where she always gives him support such as bought him some new cloths to encourage him to start a new life; she also brought Michael a trunk when he wishes for it. Besides than his adoptive mother, Sean Junior also plays an important role in the changes of Michael’s life. Because of the adoption, both of the boys had become buddies in a matter of seconds. After Michael joined the American football team in school, Sean Junior had became Michael’s personal trainer to brush up Michael’s techniques and physical abilities in football. Collins, daughter of Leign Anne also showed acceptance towards Michael when she ignores her friend’s impression towards Michael and chosen to accompanied Michael when she saw him study alone in the library.
Michael had many people that supported him. Those people include the Tuohy’s, who took in Michael and gave him food, a tutor, a home, and helped guide him in life. “I can’t talk enough about the time and work Miss Sue put into helping me. She is retired now, but she deserves to be in the hall of fame” (Oher 159). Michael also says, “When my name was called on draft day, I couldn’t imagine that life could get any better---especially since I was surrounded
The first level Michael must get to reach the next four is psychological needs. This is met when Lee Ann first takes Michael into their home and gives him a place to sleep and food. The next level is safety this is met in many ways throughout the movie. The first way is when the Tuohy’s have Michael permanently stay at their home by giving him his own bed and room. Another example of safety being met is giving him a car that had seatbelts in it, which
Likewise, the plot also differed from the book to the movie. Throughout the book, the reader can discover Michael’s whole life. It starts from when he was born, brought to America, and growing up on his own. He really struggled as a child trying to fit into his new home in America and wondering why his mother and Mary’s mother had given them up. Michael often pondered out loud to Mary, “I think they never loved us. For if they did, the would not have given us away. I think they just had us and gave us to the sisters.” (Sixsmith 113). As Michael continued to grow up, his everyday life started to become more challenging for him, especially not knowing who is real mother is. One
With Michael and his circumstances and the welcoming of him in the family this enhanced his
S.J. then turns into the role of Michael’s coach/mentor. He helps Michael train for football practices by taking him to the practice field and making him run sprints, lift weights, and other workouts. S.J. also films Michael at practices and games, so that Michael can look at them later on and learn how to make himself a better player. After filming Michael at his first game of pushing a player all the way down the field and over the fence, S.J. makes a DVD and sends a copy out so that college coaches can see how good of a player he is. The final role S.J. plays is Michael’s agent. He negotiates with every college coach who tries to recruit Michael. S.J. wants to have access to his brother and be able to reap all the benefits as well. He even asks one coach, “What am I going get from this” (The Blind Side).
Michael was brought up in poor project housing that was consumed by drugs, alcohol, and gangs. He was pushed in and out of foster homes forcefully being separated from his mother and siblings. As the movie showed in harsh flashbacks, Michael is deeply affected by the forceful separation from his mother. This constant absence from the mother or other supportive figures leaves Michael unable to make a secure attachment to any strong base. Erikson’s stage of trust versus mistrust is displayed due to Michael’s inability to count on the kindness and compassion of others which leads him to withdraw from his surroundings (p 248). This abrupt memory in life affects Michael in his idea of family and commitment. The harsh environment also kept Michael from attending school, and the times he did there was no support for him to even try in school.
One scene that came to mind was when he was practicing on the football field and wasent performing to his best ablity that everyone knew he had. In the Scene his adoptive mom Mrs. Tuohy helps him understand the position he is playing and how he should allude his players to his family, that its like protecting his family when he is playing. This scene display a great verbal communication concept that helps michael achieve what he was suppose to achieve which was perforimg at his highest level of tallent that everyone knew he had.
“I don't even remember the season. I just remember walking between them and feeling for the first time that I belonged somewhere.” ― Stephen Chbosky, the Perks of Being a Wallflower. After meeting Michael, Leigh Ann, a high class rich woman, whose kids also attend Briarcrest Christian School, sheltered him and took care of him in her house. She treated him as if he was her own son. In one quick scene, the director indicates that Leigh Ann grew up a racist house through her high social class friends. But despite that, Leigh Ann did not let that shape her, in fact, she was very happy when she was taking care of Michael “I am happy; it has everything to do with Michael” she said one in the movie. On the other hand, for Michael, meeting Leigh Ann was probably the biggest life changing event during his life. When she took him in a took care of him and ensured that he has a happy life just like any of her children do, Michael felt something he has probably never felt before. Belonging. Leigh Ann provided him with things that he did not have the ability to have as a kid such as bedtime stories from children’s books, having a person that he could talk to and having a person who greatly cared about him. Furthermore, Leigh Ann greatly influenced his football career and she was his biggest supporter. She provided him with a tutor to raise his academic performance so he can attain a scholarship. She encouraged him, protected him and taught him the value of family and the importance of protecting them. Towards the end of the movie, Leigh Ann decides to adopt Michael legally. She was surprised that when she got to a government official, they said that she would only need to sign some papers without consulting his biological mother. She decides to look for Michael’s biological mother and request her permission to legally adopt Michael. Additionally, Leigh

The next day Leigh Anne Tuohy wakes up and realizes that Michael is nowhere to be found and also did not take any of their belongings with him. She runs out of the house and catches him walking out of the driveway. At that moment she demands Michael to come back and asks him would he like to stay for Thanksgiving dinner.
