Stereotypes In 'The Outsiders'

Do soceital expectations and living conditions affect how people view someone? Ponyboy Curtis, Cherry, and Johnny are all people who are affected by soceital expectations because people expect them to conform to what they think of similar people, since they do have similar living conditions. Ponyboy and Johnny are part of a social group called the Greasers, who are the poor people in the town, and since many others think of poor people as people who steal, are thugs, and are parts of gangs, as Dally does, Ponyboy and Johnny are not. The Socs are the rich kids of the town, and most people expect them to be snobs who do not care about anything, but Cherry is not. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Cherry are Outsiders

In the “Out Siders” written by SE Hinton, set in the 1960’s, is a novel focused on Two Stereotypical youth gangs, the greasers (east side people who are poor), and the Socs (Westside people who are rich). SE Hinton has included many themes throughout the novel, as the story develops around youth conflict between these two stereotypical youth sides, and how a death could mean so much to both. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton an important theme is family and friendship. This theme is interesting because it shows us how when you’re family you come together to look after each other no matter what. The theme of friendship is also interesting because when your friends you support each other through everything and anything no matter what the consequences are. In “The Outsiders” the theme of friendship is also a main interest because despite peoples differences they can come together through a common interest or factor, which is what happens in “The Outsiders”.

The Outsiders Theme Essay The book that we read is called The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton, it takes place in the 60s and is written in a Greaser named Ponyboy’s point of view. In the book there are conflicts between the two social groups called Socs and Greasers. But in the story Ponyboy as well as all of his friends and family also face their own different kinds of struggles within the story. The theme I came up with was mainly based off of what happened to Ponyboy much rather than what happened to his friends and family.

The stereotypes in the novel are the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are the rich kids who don’t have to work for anything, while the Greasers are the poorer kids who have very little. They both live in the city of Tulsa, one group on the Northside and one on the Southside. Outside of these boundaries no-one knows of them but the hatred for each other still plays on their minds.

An important theme in The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is the idea of discrimination between the Socs and the Greasers, two rivalry groups of teenagers from different ends of the Socio-economic spectrum. Hinton tries to show how the two respective groups are not so different after all and that they could live together harmoniously. This social division provides much of the motivation for violence and conflict between the two groups. Hinton shows this theme throughout the book by using the relationships between Ponyboy Curtis (The 14 year-old Greaser narrator) and characters of different backgrounds.

The humans’ nature is always following other people without thinking. People are afraid to be different from others. When some people or some groups of people trying to be unique and different like the Hippies people will think they are disgusted. This is because power of conformity is very strong in the society. In every big city or even small town influence of the conformity were shown up. In The Outsiders, conformity is everywhere in this small town which is located in the south of U.S. Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this story are all about Greasers and Socials. The conformity in this story is showed up by the symbols that are described personality and social class of the characters in the story. In this story the conformity shows up mostly by the symbol.

Hinton, and in the short story, “Geeks Bearing Gifts”, written by Ron Koertge, stereotypes are defied by ordinary people. In The Outsiders, Johnny Cade and Darry Curtis face many struggles throughout their lives. Their town in separated into two: the rich and dangerous Socs, and the quiet, tough Greasers. For them, living dangerously is a reality. As a result of their lifestyle, Johnny has become fearful and Darry is considered the toughest man in the gang. In “Geeks Bearing Gifts” aspiring journalist, Renee, interviews her fellow classmates who are classified as “outcasts.” After meeting several students, she realizes her assumptions were incorrect about them. After reading both of these stories, the reader learns that our thoughts about others often revolve around stereotypes and assumptions, but most of these ideas that we have about other people are proven wrong.

“The Outsiders” identifies the 60’s, illustrating the violence between groups, often involving a group’s social class. For instance, the violent tensions between the Socs and Greasers lead to Bob’s death, Johnny’s death, as well as many injuries throughout both gangs. The book “The Outsiders” is written by S.E. Hinton and is portrayed through the eyes of a high school student in Tulsa, OK where S.E. Hinton grew up. Hinton began writing “The Outsiders” in 1965 at the age of 17 and the book was finally published in 1967 when she was 19. The difference in perspective upon the society and social class creates issues throughout “The Outsiders” and since the Socs and Greasers assume the problems will be solved with violence, they take action.

Hinton’s book The Outsiders, there are many themes that she conveys in the book as she narrates the experiences of a greaser named Ponyboy who is a member of the Social group (Socs). Ponyboy meets many people and witnesses many difficult situations throughout the book. This inspirational book teaches the reader crucial lessons that are very important for everyone, even if their lives are not anything like Ponyboy’s. Three important themes in the book include friendship, courage and empathy.
