I think my greatest and foremost requirement as a teacher is to make every student feel welcome. This can include working on bullying, diminishing the single story stereotypes, accommodating for each individual student's’ needs, and more. It is very crucial that students feel that they have a safe and comfortable space where they can learn and actively participate. Even if I may not agree with something a student believes in or does, it is very important that I do not let that get in the way of how I treat them, or how I let others treat them. This can also apply to my faculty members, fellow teachers, and the school district. There will be many people who have different views and beliefs as me, but the most important thing is the students, …show more content…
The definition of a single story is best described by Chimamanda Adichie’s TED Talk, where she describes people only having one story to base their entire thinking on. For example, assuming Africa is a very poor and sad country, when in reality, not everyone there is living in poverty. There are many people there that are wealthier than us, even though we may not realize it. We can all fall into the trap of single stories at least once in our lives, but it important to be informed and not let these stereotypes get in the way of our thinking. In my classroom, I need to make sure I do not look at a single story for any student, and keep myself informed and educated as much as possible about each student’s background. We see the impact of a single story again with the (Find video about textbook and Texas). One man is pushing his beliefs on people, and has the ultimate say in what is going in to textbooks that will be distributed across the country. Because of what he believes in, he gets to dictate what every student will learn. This leads to many students having a single story about certain events in history, and leads them to being very …show more content…
We have talked multiple times in class about the effects of bullying, and something needs to be done about it. According to the article by Erin Murphy, outlining the data behind bullying, it is proven that the reports of bullying from school districts is very inconsistent, and almost impossible to see what the numbers mean. However, we do know that most victims of bullying are picked on because of “their physical attributes or their mental or physical abilities.” This is absolutely ridiculous. Everyone is made differently, and they are often things that cannot be changed without some sort of extreme surgery, and it breaks my heart that people are bullied for something that they cannot change, may not be their fault, and is just something that they SHOULD NOT be bullied for. We can see bullying starting at a very young age, and it is not acceptable. But what can we do to change this? Can teachers really put an end to bullying, or does it have to come from the way parents are raising their children? We saw in the clips from the movie “Bully” that this is a huge issue that needs to be addressed and changed immediately, before people suffer even
Throughout all of education’s history there has always been issues with one particular trait that some students or children carry. Bullying. Bullying over the course of the years still plays a role in the education system. Although the form of bullying has changed from the past to now, it still has an effect on students within the school systems. In the past there was the physical form of bullying where “jocks” would push the “nerds” into lockers or their books out of their hands. Another typical term used by bullies that anybody can recognize is, “give me your lunch money,” but bullying has evolved over the year. I believe that bullying now has more of an emotional impact on students and it’s mostly verbal. Social media plays a huge role in bullying as well, so what can teachers do in order to stop cyberbullying or bullying in general?
A single story is a limited viewpoint. A single story reduces cultures and people into a simple stereotype.
There are numerous myths about bullying, and it often leads people to overlooking many budding bullying incidents. This can lead to many problems because if people believe certain things and fail to notice potential bullying incidents, this will allow the bullying to continue and eventually escalate and young people can see this as being okay. Bullying should be eliminated before it spirals out of control. There are kids who are informed that bullying is part of childhood and to just ignore it, this is not okay as this can then set an example of that it is normal to bully or to be a victim of bullying during adolescence, which it is not. 83% of young people say bullying has a negative impact on their self-esteem. If children are bullied and this carries on throughout their years as a child, it can still affect them later on and these self-esteem issues can lead to more severe issues
Perceptions and stereotypes are very important aspects of human socialization. They help us decide what is and isn’t appropriate to say, do, or otherwise bring up with others. In the TED Radio Hour,“Playing with Perceptions”, Paul Bloom explains that the problem is not stereotyping itself, it’s how it can be applied. Having preconceived notions about groups of people can often help one navigate life, but while our subconscious’ intentions may be good, often we apply these stereotypes in a rude and offensive manner.
When we stereotype individuals based on the group associations, we are taking away their personality and humanity. On this Earth, everyone has a complex life filled with numerous stories, and yet many in society focus on a single prevailing story to sum up the lives of others. Within her TED talk, Chimamanda Adichie reveals her experiences of both being subject to stereotyping and to stereotyping others. For example, according to Adichie, her roommate “asked if she could listen to what she called my "tribal music," and was consequently very disappointed when I produced my tape of Mariah Carey. She assumed that I did not know how to use a stove” (Adichie, “The Dangers of a Single Story”). Adichie, a young woman who had multiple experiences in her life and with many traits, had been brought down to a single story of a pitiable African automatically by those who saw her. The danger in this is that it takes away the humanity of a person, taking away their individuality and turning the individual into a representation of a stereotype.
Have you ever thought that a specific behavior should be changed? Maybe some friends or family were rude? I think one behavior at my school should be changed. This behavior that I’m talking about is called bullying. This is a major reason for depressed or sad kids in today’s society. Bullying is an act that happens at many schools around the world. Want to know why bullying should be changed and how it can be solved? In the following topics I’ll talk about my opinion on bullying and facts about bullying.
The TED Talk watched in class provided a very real story about the essence of stereotyping. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie mentioned how when coming to the United States and being in college made an object that many have not really encountered. A prime example of this in her case would be of her writing of a novel that was deemed “not African enough”. Just like Adichie faced, stereotypes are a seemingly way to define the normal or the expectation. Once broken it challenges our underlying assumptions of a group people that can be used to challenge power structures in place.
It is important to be exposed to others’ stories in any way possible because only then can you get a real feel for who they are. Instead of assuming we know someone based on one story we’ve heard about them, we should talk to them and learn who they truly are and what made them the person they are today. While watching the TED talk, my eyes were opened. I realized that I have stereotyped against others. Just because you know there are people in poverty and without efficient resources in Africa, doesn’t mean every single person is. Also, after reading an article and hearing about the other, I became aware that while reading a book, whether fiction or nonfiction, I put myself in the character’s shoes. I should also put myself in other people’s
won’t stop, unless it’s enforced. Ways to stop bullying can be to speak up for others, and to
Since the start of schools, bullying has become a school wide issue that has slowed down education and halted progress. Cause of bullying, fear has spread and unhealthy habits develop both
Why this all fuss about a “single story”? So what is a single story? Does this mean manipulation of ‘a single story’ by countless re-telling and thus creating an ‘entrenched’ view in our minds which we fail to challenge and investigate with a forward-looking vision?
The harmful effects of bullying can manifest physically in kids and teens by causing sleep disruptions, gastrointestinal issues, and headaches. Researchers also noticed that bullying can cause changes in the brain. Stress coping mechanisms and cognitive abilities can be affected. Also, children are at a higher risk to contemplate or attempt suicide. (Bullying is a ‘serious health problem,’ report says.” CNN Wire, 10 May 2016.) I know in my own case, I was very depressed and became bulimic. I was obsessed with losing weight, and would make myself physically sick just so I didn’t have to go to school. I eventually ended up in the hospital, dehydrated and very weak. I was then home schooled after this, which ended the bullying, but I never opened up about why I did these things. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I finally told my family about being bullied. I carried a lot of emotional and physical effects of what happened to me as a child for many years. Bullying can have long term consequences reaching well into adulthood, such as anxiety disorders and depression, physical health problems, and low self-esteem. A study by the Mayo clinic suggests that adults who were subjected to bullying as children may have an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. (Bullying in childhood linked to chronic disease risk in adults.” UPI News Current, 10 Mar. 2017.) So to help prevent bullying, what kind of changes can be made, and what
Bullying has become a great concern to many people, and parents especially because of kids and teenagers who have emotionally and physically suffered from being bullied by their classmates. Students have been pushed, hit, and verbally bullied by others and adults don’t think this type of actions are so serious and prefer to ignore it. In the past years there has been cases of suicide and murder of students who have been bullied and it has caught many schools attention. Is not that bullying has become more common now a days. The difference is that the media is making this problem more public than it used to and it is making people more cautious about this problem. Now there are schools that want to take action into
At the anti bullying event I learned that bullying is “an imbalance of power” meaning that one person has the upper hand and they can take advantage of the control they have to use it in malicious ways. I also learned about the different types of bullying such as verbal, social, and physical. Bullying is found in school but it can follow students outside of it like on buses, neighborhoods and even the internet. It was also stated that bullying can have results that last forever on both the children that bully and the bullied. Since bullying has such a big impact there should be steps towards preventing it in schools.
Bullying in High school in the Us shows that with every four students enrolled there is one child who is bullied regularly. The bullying that occurs in high school is carried over from middle school as early as sixth grade. In some surveys it shows that 30% of bullies have been either bullied themselves or come from a rough home life. Another survey shows that 77% of students are verbally and mentally abused, 14% of that 77 end up having a severely negative reaction to the bullying, such as anxiety, a drop in grades, and less want to be with friends. In the schools it is said that 50% of bullying incidents happen in the restroom, when there is no one around to negate it. However, 85% of students do not receive help from teachers or school staff. I believe that should be fixed and that teachers should actually show that they care.
