“Teenagers are the most misunderstood people on earth. Treated like children but expected to act like adults”. As a teenager myself, I agree with this saying that adults have been continuously stereotyping us teenagers. Due to this stereotype teens are considered irresponsible, immature, and unreliable.
Adolescents are often viewed by adults as being too irresponsible because these adults themselves have forgotten what it is like to be a teenager. Thus, causing them to judge the teenagers dishonestly as they do not fully understand their point of view. For instance, throwing tantrums about everything, even small and useless things. However, the society has failed consider the reasons to why teenagers might behave this way. The first reason available is due to the occurrence of rapid growth of synapses or connections in the brain, which start in the early stage of adolescence. Evidence has proved that a part of the teenager’s brain, named the prefrontal cortex, which function is to make decisions on situations and helps control impulses and emotions, is less mature in a teen brain than in an adult brain, therefore, causing teenagers to feel misunderstood, make poor decisions and also act immature. Due to their lack of maturity teenagers are also considered to be “short-sighted because they make poor judgments and risky decisions” (Steinberg, 2009). Adults think that teenagers are often making risky decisions and not thinking about the future but in fact teenagers are just people of the moment. This again proves how irresponsible teens can be, because they make hasty decisions according to society but in fact that’s how teens think and process. Teens tend to make decisions based on how it will affect them in the present not in the past which leaves the adults thinking that they make bad decisions because they do not think about what will happen in the long
